So I need a new laptop. I've been Apple-only for years, but exchange rates have my usual 15" Macbook Pro at more than $4000.00 after taxes. This is a dumb amount of money for what I will use it for, especially since I kind of hate a lot of things about Sierra.
Next, good results from PS4 Pro had me interested in what an even more powerful platform in Scorpio could do...but then I realized they've announced everything from that platform will just come out on PC and be even better there. So now for the first time in my life I'm thinking seriously about getting a Windows PC that can run games at high settings.
Where do I start if I want a powerful laptop that doesn't weigh 30 lbs. or look like a Monster energy drink?
It's a $2000 gaming PC that you can't open, thus making it the world's most expensive Xbox. Looks slick as hell though.

Any "powerful" gaming laptop is going to weigh a ton and have relatively crap battery life. I can only recommend going with one if you are away from home a lot. Otherwise, you can get a reliable low-power laptop + even more powerful gaming desktop for the same amount of money.
I'm telling you this to make you think about it and really figure out if it is something you really want.

Like, look at these prices for laptops with GTX 1080's in them: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100167732%20601206466%20601206491%204814&cm_sp=CAT_Gaming-Laptops_5-_-VisNav-_-GTX-1080
The cheapest ones start at like $2,500. And these mobile GTX 1080's are significantly slower than their desktop counterparts.

MSI 1080 Ti Armor for 750€.
Damn it. I was (still am) almost set on getting a 1080, but at this price ... Cavalo help.

This is kind of what I was afraid of from initial looking around. I'm a bit resistant to desktops simply because I don't like sitting at a desk to do any work. Every paper I've ever written or any audio job I've ever done has been in sitting in bed or sprawled on a couch. I kind of saw this as a chance to roll some gaming expenses into the inevitable laptop purchase, a desktop would essentially just be a pricey console hooked up to my TV.
Also a bit particular about the laptop. Everybody in academia has a shiny expensive Macbook. I guess I could get some kind of anti-capitalist revolutionary cred showing up to conferences with a low-end thing produced in a socialist country running LXLE, but I'd rather just get something cool that works for more than 18 months.
Lenovo Thinkpad T-Series (or better) are every bit as reliable as Macbooks. They are the only laptop line other than Apple's own that I recommend to people wanting reliability. You could also try out a Microsoft Surface since they have matured and are pretty reliable.

I like the ones that have robots coming out of the screen.
I feel like I'm looking into a world of PS Vitas for Metal Gear villains.
Those gaming laptops also put out a ridiculous amount of heat when doing cpu or gpu intensive tasks on them. You will need something like a laptop desk board to separate it from your lap if you plan on using it that way. Also, using that same thing to prop it up on the bed so that it actually gets ventilation instead of the vents being covered by the sheets.

Yeah, I had one of those at my last office job. It was...solid if utterly uninspiring. Man, they're cheap though. I've bought software that cost more.
Also, if anyone else wants to chime in and correct my perceptions in this conversation, please do. My views may be out of date with how quickly things can change.

e: They used to be IBM but the laptop line was bought out by Lenovo like ten years ago now.
By livefromkyoto Go To PostThrough my incredible detective skills, I read the name "Corsair One" on the monitor, and went straight to Google. You can open it, it's just highly advised not to since most people wouldn't be able to put it back together. Also, there's nothing wrong with closed PCs since not everyone is into building/upgrading.

The laptop GPUs are now the same as the desktop. Nvidia made that change with Pascal. So those are full fledged 1080s.
By Smokey Go To PostThe laptop GPUs are now the same as the desktop. Nvidia made that change with Pascal. So those are full fledged 1080s.Thanks for the correction! The specs I was looking at in a review site for the laptops were different from Nvidia's listed specs for the desktops. I just verified on Nvidia's site that you are correct with them both having the same specs now.

What Smokey said.
Kjack is the king of laptop gaming so if you hit him up on here or in GAF he can get you the lowdown.
Before my gaming PC, I had three gaming laptops and they never did me wrong.
My last MSI is still going stronk.
I am biased against gaming laptops unless used in a situation that fits their advantages. LFK's situation may be one of those in which a gaming laptop is the best choice. I just want him to be aware of the drawbacks in case any of them are a deal breaker.
I bought one years and years ago and did not really think about the downsides of it and regretted spending all that money ever since.

Speaking of 32" displays. I was surprised to see that the LG 32UD99 (4K, HDR) will be 'only' 999$/€. It makes the price of the upcoming Asus 27" 4K HDR 144hz look even more preposterous. It's definitely a category above as far as features go, but still. It should've been priced 1500$/€, imo.

They get the benefit of the doubt from me. EVGA is a top tier brand. They had a oversight on the ACX cards, but rectified it with the ICX. I know you had a bad experience with them, but there's a reason they are as popular as they are.

I found the following video as I was going through DF archive. It compares the 7700k to the 3770k/4790k/6700k. In some cases like Witcher 3, there's a huge difference in average fps (141 v 113). Don't know if you saw the vid before or not, but it gives you an idea of potential gains moving forward:

Thanks Smokey. I'm a little uneducated about motherboard compatibility. Would a motherboard that can fit a 3570k be able to handle the new i7s ?
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostThanks Smokey. I'm a little uneducated about motherboard compatibility. Would a motherboard that can fit a 3570k be able to handle the new i7s ?
no
compatibility is about the socket intel is on at the time. 3770k is on socket 1155
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_Bridge_(microarchitecture)
Kaby Lake is on socket 1151
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaby_Lake
Haswell processors were the point where you needed a new motherboard. Usually Intel sticks to a socket for 2 CPU cycles before moving to a new one. The next CPU family, Coffee Lake, is going to use a new socket.
GTA 5 maxed everything is still a killa. CPU and GPU(s) both getting worked hard.
Literally put everything at its max -- Shadows, TXAA, Pop density etc. At 1440p I was able to still hold 60fps (barely) on a single card. At 4k though? Ti got ate up. Averaged 45 fps. Granted that's still playable but it was working hard. SLI performance good at 4k tho, averaged in the mid 80s on those same settings.

Back again, my sis is targeting an Alienware-like ATX/Mid Tower case. Something like these designs (Image1, Image2) or similar. Checking to see if Phanteks, Corsair, NZXT, Tesseract or Cooler Master have something like that (Alienware-ish, lots of lights/multiple fans). "Biggest thing is it has to be quiet and have that funky Alienware design" she quoted when we looked through it. I've searched for a few hours, anyone care to share any input?
Cool, Hazaro's Build Thread info got updated on the other forum.
I need to compare these two CPUs... Intel Core i7 6700 vs. Intel Core i5 7500. Probably should stick to the one with more threads.

By Zabojnik Go To PostWhy would anyone want one of those monstrosities? Sister por favor. She likes it because of Star Trek and the Alien design. I was hoping for something of a less garish design myself, so I'm looking at websites with something 'close' to the Alienware design without being full-on ugly. Even something like these or this would be ok with her. It's her computer, I'm just making sure the build works :P
Got most of the parts for the new build locked down. Decided to go with a 1080. Will consider upgrading once Volta is out. I just couldn't justify spending 350€ more right now, not when I still haven't decided which new monitor to get.
Speaking of, this has got to be the frustrating PC related decision I've had to make since ... ever? It certainly feels that way. I was almost set on getting the Omen ultrawide, but now I'm not so sure anymore. No decent reviews to speak of yet, disgraceful VESA mounting system (it's fine, but kinda sucks if you plan on having it mounted as close as possible against the wall), 1-year warranty, high price that doesn't feel fully justified. I might still get it, but ... HDR is on the rise and while it will probably take a good while for reasonably(-ish) priced HDR gaming monitors to come out - looking at the rumoured panel releases over at tftcentral I'd say at least 18-24 months - and for games to widely embrace it ... I don't know. I sense buyers remorse coming up.

It's a bad time to buy a new monitor tbh. DP 1.4 is here and with that brings 4k and high refresh panels. The high refresh rate should be making it's way to Ultrawides (I would think). They've been stuck at 100hz top since release. Samsung has some HDR monitors coming out this year iirc and of course there's Asus and Acer.
There's one shit monitor id avoid that only puts out like 500 nits.
Its looking like that super 144 hz 4k one is the best option. Like 2k. But it puts out 1000+ nits for good hdr so it's the perfect 4k gaming monitor.

I have a hard time believing they'll put out at $2,000 monitor. I can see $1,500 - $1,700 because of all the first ever tech in a monitor, but $2,000? Mannnn

VA / IPS 3440x1440 @ 100hz with g-sync is more than fine for my needs and should be a drastic upgrade over my current shmonitor. Right now, wherever you turn, whoever you ask, everything is "should be coming". There's no concrete info on any new DP1.4 monitors, certainly not on monitors that might interest me, other than the Asus (and presumably Acer) 4K HDR one, which ... forget about it, at that price. I'm still leaning towards ultrawide and there's even less news there. Acer's "new" X34P has been confirmed for Q3/Q4 2017 and we already know it's only bringing 100hz native (rather than through overclocking). Such upgrade, much wow. Samsung might come out with a g-sync variant of the CF791, but again, no official confirmation, no dates. Dell's got nothing new in the gaming 21:9 department either.
So, yeah, it feels like the DP1.4 floodgates are about to open, but the hard info available and educated guessing seem to suggest otherwise. I suppose the smart thing would be to wait for whatever announcements await us at Computex ... which I already sense will be full of "coming Q1 2018". Almost a year from now. Six months at the very least. What a time to be looking for a new monitor, truly.
I want that high refresh rate for CS.
Bit confused about the g-sync screens. There's one using Nvidia and one using AMD tech, but does either work for free v-sync (even if you got the other companies card)?

By Wahabipapangus Go To PostI want that high refresh rate for CS.AFAIK, if you are using an Nvidia card, it can only do the variable refresh rate with a G-Sync monitor. For AMD cards, variable refresh rate will only work with active/freesync monitors.

Nope. If you have a Nvidia GPU and want variable refresh rate, you have to pick a g-sync (Nvidia's proprietary VRR tech) monitor. If you have an AMD GPU and want variable refresh rate, you'll need a free-sync monitor (AMD's royalty-free implementation of VRR, based on the VESA standard aka adaptive sync). Nvidia don't support the latter. They could, of course, but refuse to. They might in the future, but I wouldn't bet on it.
That sucks, seems to be very few freesync monitors (around here at least).
Geforce experience annoys me so much at this point, really wish AMD would make some top cards for a decent price again.

I never touch it.
No, but I use shadowplay quite a lot, which requires geforce experience.
They keep making the interface worse and worse, and it will sometimes completely disable shadowplay without warning, when it wants to update.
Old PC is gone. :( I got legit a little sad when I was taking it apart earlier. What a glorious piece of hardware the 2600k was. Still is. May it run for another 6 years in someone else's machine. :bigbosssalute:
Ordered pretty much all the new parts from Mindfactory.de, except the case, which I bought locally. Pretty much the best prices around & great customer service (according to the forum posting majority). I still haven't decided what to do regarding the new monitor. I'm slowly warming up to the idea of getting a relatively cheap 27" 1440p IPS screen to carry me over until the end of the year, see what the landscape looks like then. Will see.
Zabo's 2017 build is as follows.
Case: Fractal Design Define C
Processor: i7 7700k
Cooler: Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z270F
Graphics card: MSI 1080 GTX Armor
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz 16gb (2x8gb)
Power supply: Corsair RM750i
Storage: Samsung 960 EVO 250gb (+ my "old" SSDs, so long HDDs)
Fans: Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3
Optical drive: lulz I'm still getting a 15€ external USB DVD-RW tho, you never know.

Super tacky, but I can see the mini display and various other performance / status indicators becoming the next trend. EVGA's ICX paving the way.
