By Kibner Go To PostIt might be less it deciding to use half it's strength as the CPU is unable to feed it the information it needs quickly enough.
By Kibner Go To PostUnless you are being sarcastic and I got whooshed.
No, that's what Durante is telling me on gaf. CPU limited at 1080p which is what I posted a few days back from a Digital Foundry video. I just didn't think I'd see it in a benchmark. My 6 cores nor the additional 6 threads were close to 100% from what I can tell. I figured I was being CPU limited but due to what I just mentioned, wasn't quite sure.
It might not be CPU usage as much as latency. The video card may be requiring certain information from the CPU every frame but the CPU just can't deliver it to the GPU quickly enough to render the next frame without delay. It doesn't show up as usage because the CPU isn't being overloaded or anything. There is just too big of a delay between the GPU creating a request, sending it to the CPU, have the CPU process it, then send the result back to the GPU. Or something of that nature, anyway.
Latency for things like that is why GPU render farms try to have as little communication with the main CPU as possible. The communication delay between the two parts is the bottleneck more so than the performance of either part.

Of course, it has been years since I last really looked into things like this (back when I was curious about CUDA), so I'm sure my details are wrong, but I *think* my overall point is still correct.
Makes sense to me. Even playing BF1 there are times where the usage will drop to the 80s @ 1440p and the only way to get it back up to 99% is to increase the resolution downsample slider. Similar to the 3DMark benchmark.

Internal clockspeed of the CPU itself is not a factor (or you would get 100% usage if it wasn't fast enough).

X79 platform is 5 years old at this point ;_;
I took a look at the 3DMark leaderboards. I have a good score but , comparatively speaking, the dudes on the leaderboards with worse cards than the Ti all are on X99, and are several thousand points above me. DDR4 + years of architectural improvements will do that.
I think Skylake-X is slated to hit Q2/Q3 this year. Will have to take a look.

Ryzen 5 prices announced

6 cores for $219. This is great for the consumer because Intel will be forced to release a mainstream 6c chip at a decent price.
I need this more than I need life.
By Smokey Go To PostDebating if I should send the second 1080Ti back and use that $700 for a true custom water cooling setup…Keep both. Sell me both for $500 when volta drops.

gpu's coming up on that 8k with the swiftness and the manufacturers can barely get a display out
they better have 8k monitors sub 1k by the time volta drops

Nothing stops this train. I just hope it doesn't have any major flaws. I don't trust HP. Or VA for that matter. Still, the lesser evil and all that.
By Smokey Go To PostThis build done. Skylake-X it is.Custom power supply cables on their way, I dare presume?
By YungMagus Go To PostYo I currently got an i5-6400 @ 2.70 ghz
Is it worth upgradeing now and if so to what?
Broad question. Depends entirely on what games you play.
By Zabojnik Go To PostCustom power supply cables on their way, I dare presume?
Those are custom cables from EVGA. I've had them for a few years though

So I did do a quick Heaven run. Gave the cards a +115/+150 OC. I'm being held back by the CPU a bit in Heaven since it primarily uses 1 core, and it was pegged around 97%. Usage on the cards were around 88%-90%.

I just wanna do more shit at once.
LIke have a stream open on one monitor while playing a game or something.
Also want to emulate consoles while having background activates/videos streams.
The wii u emulator I can run but my current cpu is my bottleneck
Word?
Shits 600 bucks where im at.
Im looking at i5 7600 and i7 7700. Both are within my price range
Prices are no punk out here..
By blackace Go To PostPrices are no punk out here..
Nope, they are not.
Also need an new hard drive as well. This 1tb only got 80gb left ;_;
By blackace Go To PostHDD aren't to bad.. but video cards and CPUs are killers..
True on both accounts.
And if it helps with the cpu upgrading: my desktop is dell inspiron 3650. A mini tower with 300w power supply.
7700k is probably your best bet. You cant use the unlocked multiplier on a dell, but its still 600mhz faster than the non-k variant.
Seems like my new build is delayed for a month which I'm ok with since then I'll get a Custom 1080ti. Might splash out on some good headphones instead.

Ok noted.
But yea as long as I can use the card on my dell then I'll be good

Still considering sending that second Ti back even though it looks great. Getting a stronger urge than ever to try water
bruh put that 700 dollars in a college fund for the kid or something man
waste of money on that water shit
waste of money on that water shit
it's definitely not a waste to go full custom loop. There are tangible benefits to doing so. For one heat. Then there's noise reduction. Some people would consider discrete GPUs a waste when there's a iGPU built in to today's processors.
Now
Is it something non enthusiast people mess with? No.
Already have it semi mapped in my head. Looks like a 360 rad will work in the front of the Air 540, 240 rad up top, with a pump/res combo in the front drive bay where I currently have my fan controller.
It's things like tubing, brands, etc that I need to look into more. Probably quick disconnects too since I change GPUs quite often.

Liquid cooling does come with a price tag, like everything that is good. There are no shortcuts in life and therefore, there are no shortcuts in cooling either.
