Music that falls roughly into this category that I have been enjoying recently:
Kiasmos - Kiasmos - ambient-electro Icelandic good ness
Other Lives - Rituals - Like Alt J really, but still a good'un
Sun Kil Moon - all of it, even with MK being a miserable bugger: band to solo acoustic songs of melancholy, love, etc etc
The previews of Chelsea Wolfe's new album - dark folk/electronica/tinges of rock, Pain is Beauty is a great album (and she is stablemate of the uber Russian Circles)

There's a pop rock band called Last Lynx that I've been listening to a lot lately. They've got three EPs so far.

By CRUD Go To PostNew Tame Impala album Currents is outstanding.
I couldn't really get into his/their previous albums but Currents is amazing.
Revisiting Mount Eerie's "Clear Moon", still really like it. Low tempo, drone-y goodness.
Youtube playlist of the entire album.

The Less I Know The Better is great too.
Locrian's new album Infinite Dissolution is pretty good.
The band can be described as a mix of black metal, noise rock and drone.

I've seen them this year when they opened for Interpol. Not a fan of their records. But live it was interesting. They played some new stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV7-6QC5gCk
By Shun Go To PostDoes anyone listen to Made in Heights? What kind of music is it?
By JayEleven Go To PostWhat kind of music is it?I am not familiar with how some people label genres but I like to think they're alternative-something. Definitely underground. I like them, since one of the members Sabzi, is someone I followed for a while. Their newer stuff from their recent album is different from their older stuff, I'd recommend them a try.

How does this community define indie, just independently produced artists? I am unsure how to define it since some of the bands and groups I listen over the years become popular or vary in popularity and recognition.
Youngblood Hawke, twenty-one pilots, FOLKS, Galileo Galilei, etc are indie, and I guess CHVRCHES, SEKAI NO OWARI, Vampire Weekend, the xx, etc. got popular in the past few years.
Just everything you consider to be some what alternative. That can be Radiohead but also Fuzz. And everyting in between. Just the music you wouldn't talk about in a pop or hiphop thread.
Though obviously there's some crossover here and there. Artists like St. Vincent are probably also spoken about in a pop thread. But she also fits in here. You get the gist.

You could just describe the musical elements. Is it synthy, rock, bluesy, hip hop, uptempo, downtempo, etc. So many goddamn subgenres it's not worth it to even try to label anything anymore. Tell somebody you like EDM and you've simultaneously told them everything and nothing.
God I hate the label EDM. I understand it has its general sound, kinda stadium-y dance but people use it to refer to all dance/electronic stuff and I hate that.
Give me back the thousands of genres. Mention acid house to someone who likes EDM and you get a blank look :(

Made in Heights crosses between electronic pop and hip hop, I think.
Give them a shot, I've been following them for a while and heard nothing but good things from my friends when I tell them about them.

They always do good work. Only listened to a handful so far but I'm digging it.
New Disclosure song came out, featuring Sam Smith (a winning combo in my book).

Still have to listen to it. Agreed on Go, it's a great track.
Think Young the Giant are one of the most underrated active bands in existence. I absolutely adore both of their albums. Fucking flawless live too.. Sameer's voice is insane.

Not sure why Depression hasn't been pushed up yet. The leak sounded finished.
Like its gonna be pretty DOA. It'll be more than a month since the leak by the time it officially drops.
Unless they have like tour dates tied up with the official release or something.

That's fire. Damn.
Made In Heights' Without My Enemy What Would I Do is my album of the year so far.
Sometimes it takes years and years of pimping a band on Facebook to get someone to bite, but it's so gratifying when they finally do and gush about how good they are. 🙌🏻
Buddy texted me he was checking out Lissie and then 90 minutes later that he loved her voice and music style. Listeninng to my other perennial recommendation First Aid Kit now.
