By faridmonThose louder Garage type songs just drown out the vocals and the sound is just so familiar and I don't want to say generic, but same-y. Although, I can see how the same thing can be said about the more folksy songs.By psychintellectBurn Your Fire For No Witness by Angel Olsen is reeeally good. The 'louder' more garage band type songs don't really click with me. But the more folk sounding records are amazing. She has a great voice, really haunting when she goes for the higher notes.I am exactly the opposite. Can't stand the pop-fiolk aspect of her (or any of other musicians similiar to her such Laura Marling and Lady Lamd the Beekeeper) but absolutely love the loud Garage aspect of thier music.
By psychintellectI suppose it depends what sort of music you expect them to have. For me, I am kind of tired of all the same folky sweet melodies in most female indie singers. La Sra done a brilliant job last year fusing the two element, but yeah, if you don't like the noisy sound, then I can see your point.By faridmonThose louder Garage type songs just drown out the vocals and the sound is just so familiar and I don't want to say generic, but same-y. Also, I don't feel those tracks sound similar, the fuzz actually gives it a bit more texture and hence emotion.

By reiloPurity Ring up on NPR: http://www.npr.org/2015/02/26/387542930/first-listen-purity-ring-another-eternitySounds great, might get the album. Didn't like the first one, but the new one might be up to my alley.
Just came back from Death From Above gig. It was kind of bad. Horrible sound system, the new music was boring and they didn't rehearsed their old ones so they felt kind of underwhelming.
Is this the thread where we talk about Neutral Milk Hotel
I dunno if Sun Kil Moon is applicable for this thread but man I sure love some Sun Kil Moon

And of course we talk about NMH here.
You have been neglecting your own thread
Quick, what can you tell me about the new Twerps album.
By Le SilkIs this the thread where we talk about Neutral Milk HotelI've never really listened to them but I see everyone going on about them all the time.
I'll give them a listen soon.
Since you like Real Estate you'll probably love Twerps. It's got that same vibe going. Very relaxing music, perfect for the summer. Really hoping they come over here around the summer. Would be perfect for Best Kept Secret.

I'm still surprised by how much I'm liking new Purity Ring's album.
Think is even better that their debut album.
Purity Ring is amazing. Have you heard Breathe This Air? It's by Jon Hopkins featuring Purity Ring and it's great.

Lol
San Cisco Bassist literally shot himself in the foot in a training practice, later that day, the band released their next single. Australia innit.
The new song is as great as the first one, the new album (which is coming by the way on the 4th of April) should be amazing

The thing I like most about this video is that everyone has two feet.
What I'm currently loving, old and new, aside from the new Sleater-Kinney (I'll assume everyone's fully up on that biz):
Priests - And Breeding - Super cool punk band, and my favorite song from them. The more I listen to this jam the more I love it. The rhythm is fierce. The style is exuding in abundance. It's a very aggressive song so if you're looking for a chill out jam this isn't the one.
John Wizards - Muizenberg - This is the perfect chill out song. I'm not even certain if that's hyperbole. John Wizards is an experimental elctro, indie, afropop, R&B, reggae band and I can't recommend them enough. Listen to this song, it'll be a new favorite then listen to their self titled album. (also)
The Promise Ring - Red & Blue Jeans There's so much to say here. "Nothing Feels Good" by The Promise Ring is a suburban mopes classic. This might be my favorite song off it. That fucking impeccable rhythm section... How the plodding baseline leads into the noodley guitar. Shit's next level groovin'.
Dirty Art Club - Ghost Of The Night Tide - Dirty Art Club are a great instrumental hip hop duo. They're not getting all too much recognition at the moment but their new album "Vermilion" is fantastic. If you like atmospheric, layered and at times haunting beats you'll dig this.
Nice! Good to see some Front Bottoms appreciation "Talon of the Hawk" is excellent straight through.

This is excellent, especially the lyrics.

Yeah, I love female fronted No-Wave/Post Punk bands that have a root in the 80s New York Groove scene, They are just expressionists in a more artsy way, and have this balance between fierce anger and melodic sensibility.
Bands I would recommend in that vein:

By KikarianAnyone listened to The Charlatans new album? It's fantastic.Good to hear. My wife and I met because she loved oasis as well, but The Charlies are her all time favorite band. She's been a bit disappointed at their output recently.
Oh man, Jaws gig was absolutely amazing, if you guys have the chance to see them, see them. They killed it live and their live version of each song is absolutely amazingly different.
Oh bb, that new Courtney Barnett record is legit.
Great time to like music with new albums from Sufjan, Courtney and Modest Mouse so shortly one after the other. Kendrick to follow up later this month.

A more punk-ish take on the emo revival, it's good.
Seriously you jerks should check this out, you'll know after the first track if it's for you or not.
I will in one minute. Got Beach Fossils on my to-listen list for the day, too.

I'm currently trying to get a mate from school get into 'good' music some more without being too much of a dick. He's listening to bands like Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead already. So there's some good groundwork. Now I'm introducing him to bands you'd normally wouldn't stumble upon trough the radio or whatever over here. And he's open to it.
Sometimes it sucks a bit that in real life I have hardly people around me I can talk to about music :P

Yeah, man. Its bloody amazing. Their previous album was really good, glad to see the new one as good, if not better.
By psychintellectSo, have any of the past few releases by The Black Keys been as good Brothers?
Even though El Camino is very catchy more straight forward rock, I like it probably the best. Brothers and most of their older stuff is great too. Turn Blue was a bit of a letdown sadly.
I thought Courntey Barnett was just an Aussie thing. San Cisco I can see exporting well but wasn't sure about Courtney.

Courtney got good coverage from Pitchfork early on. She played around the world last year too, even on Glastonbury. And she's making music very reminiscent of that 90's indie rock era. A genre that does well globally.
With Cloud Control and Tame Impala as well Australia got some interesting Indie bands at the moment. And I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Australia currently is exporting music like crazy. Not only has Can Cisco taken off in a crazy manner, we had also Cloud Control Tame Impala, Pond, Jagwar Ma, The Greats, Jet, Temple, Last Dinosaurs, The Growl, Hungry Kids of Hungary and Birds of Tokyo having major success abroad and making great music. Not to mention the veterans such as Cut Copy and Architecture and Helsinki and you have a little country with massive talent in music.
