I didn't see the game, but thank goodness they didn't lose that one. Getting taken out by an already reeling squad with no
Lillard would have sucked.
Hope they sober up by Wednseday for the Golden State game.

Okafor sucks so bad. Embiid being this good so soon makes Jah look even worse because as soon as Embiid leaves and Jah enters things tend to go to shit.

Malcolm Gladwell has an entire podcast about how we've known for like 50 years that this is technically a better way to shoot free throws, but nobody will do it because it seems effeminate.
It's completely different from how you regularly shoot and it removes much of the feel of the ball from the player. It could technically be a more suitable way to shoot FTs, but the psychological angle may be the stark contrast to how the ball is handled the entire rest of the game rather than some BS about masculinity.
I would say that if you were trying to do the miss on purpose at the end of the game trick, I'd go underhand and aim for the end of the rim. You probably get better ricochet control from a straight to the rim underhand throw.

Drummond and DeAndre Jordan should never be shooting normally in a basketball game though.
By DY_nasty Go To Postshooting underhanded is like sitting down to pee
Better to sit down and get the job done than spray piss everywhere.
By DY_nasty Go To Postshooting underhanded is like sitting down to peeThat's still an improvement for the guys who currently shit all over themselves at the line.
I remember Nick Van Exel fixing his FTs by taking two steps back so it felt more like a long 2. That's gotta be the most anti-analytics success story.
What the fuck Lin never used to be this injury prone. The fuck happened to him?
Now we're reduced to relying on Randy Foye gamewinners smh.

I mean, it literally says "granny freethrow" (not grandpa) in the video title, and the camera constantly cuts to his teammates laughing at him.
Rick Barry was the king of it, but at first his son wouldn't do it because he said it's how girls shoot them. Wilt sucked at FTs, but wrote in his book that he wouldn't shoot underhand because it made him look like a "sissy." Shaq was the all-time exhibit A for a guy who needed to try this, but he refused because it wasn't cool and said he'd rather shoot 0%.
And psychological difference...come on. If you're after a multi-million dollar job, you can learn an extra, easier skill. We place all kinds of way heavier demands on players - "needs to learn to defend," "gotta develop a post game," "needs to learn to shoot the three," etc.

Yeah, it's basically a masculinity thing. They don't want to be made fun of for shooting "like a girl". ... Or in the way many Children are taught who haven't learnt a "jump shot" yet.
Partially, i get. But when you go from being a 40% shooter to 70%... just walk past the bench, where the guy making fun of you is now sitting cause he can't make free throws.

Have you ever really played hoops?

By DY_nasty Go To PostIf you're under 6'9 and trying to granny it over the rim, you lost. And this is why NBA players don't do it. Despite it probably being easier for them from the FT line.
On a different topic...the Knicks have a worse differential than the Timberwolves. How long are they going to stay over .500?
There's nothing about under handed free throws that is inherently easier though. Not sure why people act like its easier.

Yeah. Ran guard on school team. Played pickup in the neighborhood.

Physics disagrees though.

By etiolation Go To PostYeah. Ran guard on school team. Played pickup in the neighborhood. Then you should know that FTs are pretty much as far removed from any other type of shot you take that underhanded / overhanded doesn't matter
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostThere's nothing about under handed free throws that is inherently easier though. Not sure why people act like its easier.Fewer moving parts, easier to consistently reproduce same form, and easier to produce a more friendly arc.
I mean, I understand why guys don't do it. But, it does have its advantages at the free throw line.

By p s y Go To Postnah, fuck the refs, throw them all the way under the bus. They're professionals.
Like all professionals they should be critiqued.
By Tea Go To PostHere's a critique, put more refs on the fucking court if you want proper calls.I"m not sure it's a case of more is better. You'd wind up with MORE interpretations.
I think that if you're going to use reviews ... they should be available all the time. But i get why they aren't.
But until a 2 minute timeout is actually 2 minutes and not 5... it feels like a very fake claim.
Doesn't have to be watching the same stuff. Get some line judges, dudes watching feet, travels can finally be called. Then the others can focus on actual antics. Also you wont have to stop and review a shot, line judges got that covered already.
We have the proper technology these days to setup cameras on the baseline to be accurate line judges. Tennis has had it approaching decades.
By reilo Go To PostWe have the proper technology these days to setup cameras on the baseline to be accurate line judges. Tennis has had it approaching decades.Or that. A human can do a couple more things but either way, if you're making just like 3 dudes look for travels, fouls, charges, etc when there are 10 dudes on the court and expect fair and good calls. Pffft.

Doesn't really work when dudes can run out of bounds and then back in. Some with the ball others not. And it can be thrown back in.
Works in Tennis because of how cut and dry the situation is.
Both Burks and Hill are practicing again but won't play tonight so looks like a loss to the Lakers.. sigh.

You got all the time in the world to review a tech anyways, a few moments to see who established position when isn't some huge technological hurdle. "Who touched it last" will be a problem, sure, but going off of how successful the camera has been for the 3 point line and shot clock, then its not a stretch to assume that cameras for goaltending, offensive interference, and the out of bounds stuff.

More refs of the court helps too. You minimize the amount of shit that people have to watch and account for. There was a game this year where someone tried to call a foul from an angle that they almost certainly couldn't see clearly from. Add in the fact that refs obviously don't like undercutting each other and you have more problems that there needs to be.

They're talking about automating the OOB call. Not just having a dedicated camera.
I mean, yeah, have a line camera. But I just don't think you can automate it in basketball.
They should be able to automate goaltending. A sensor that lights up with a ball hits the backboard and a camera above the rim.
