By shun Go To PostDon't players, the scouted ones at least, get full lifetime scholarships to come back and finish their education whenever they want? At least that is what Calipari says about his players. That scholarship is garbage if you're NBA level talent. Why get a free $50k degree in sociology or communication in 4 years time when you can be making $100k/yr playing basketball? Latter is more than a livable wage especially if you come from a poor background like most of these kids do. NCAA exploits kids while the schools and organization makes billions over their free labor, plain and simple.
Wouldn't you want to be guaranteed education?
Sorry if I misunderstand this from my surface understanding of Division 1 sports at cal.
We're running a lineup without Hayward, Hood, Hill, and Favors right now and I'm not exactly sure where the offense is going to come from, but we've scored 3 out of the 4 nights down the court so I guess something is going right?
Gobert completely dominating Adams, Jazz playing very good overall defense against YNB.

I see that they play for free and exploit and should be paid, but isn't education important. The point isn't staying there for 4 years before they leave but to be able to go back and have a fall back and a means to develop more skills if something like Greg Oden happens again.
I'm not trying to defend what they do I am just trying to understand when the NBA and professional sports can be volatile.

If they went there for the education they'd stay 4 years. But the NCAA isn't actually about that at all. Not even close.

We're booing Kanter hard right now when Kanter's life has fallen apart and he would be arrested if he went back to his home country and I just don't know....
He's a jerkoff, but it would nice to not boo for a minute...

I think that's worth more than $50k communications degree.

Also, there's no such thing as a useful 2 year degree or a pat on the back for completing 2 out of 4 years in college.
Holy shit, someone just made a full-court shot at the buzzer.
That never happens anymore because no one even shoots those anymore.

I mean yeah, but it just feels weird when you're booing a dude in the "wanted by dictator for treason in home country" category.

Idealism aside, a college education is just a means of maybe securing financial security, if you can even find a job in your field psst-graduation.
How is going to the league any different? What percentage of these kids even secured the proper education in high school, to be able to earn a degree that'll be worth a shit?
Greek Freak's brother bombed out of the league, but is now overseas making $500K USD a year. Yeah, fuck going back to college.
Favors has completely dominated Kanter tonight, fundamental defense sooooo goooood.
I know why we're booing him >_>

Kyle Singler just got dunked on by Gobert and then got his stuffed on a block on the other end.
It's been rough for him.
Jazz up by 16.

- Scholarships are not for four years. They have to be renewed each semester (half-year). The school can pull a scholarship from a "student-athlete" at any time for any reason
- If a player is injured through the course of playing for the team, he is not guaranteed any monetary help with treatment or rehab from the school. They are also allowed to pull his scholarship at the same time.
- Schools have a limited number of scholarships they can give out that is mandated by the NCAA. Under-performing players that are cut also have the scholarship taken from them.
- If a player leaves early for a professional league, the player is no longer eligible for an athletic scholarship at any NCAA institution.
- Players do not own rights to their names or likeness for their college careers. If they had a famous moment and then got hurt (and scholarship pulled), they are unable to use that moment of theirs to earn enough income to continue their education and/or injury treatment.
In short, NCAA scholarships are only guaranteed on a per-semester basis and there is no fall-back option available to the players whatsoever under the system if they get hurt.

Oh, all that isn't to also mention that players are often "highly encouraged" to take easy, worthless classes so that they maintain academic eligibility. The quality of their education is dubious, to say the least.

See I'm trying to understand it because this is still kind of a foreign concept to me how these things work. I'm a foreign youngblood.
This only come up because I see that Greg Oden, after making what he did, is back at school to finish up and working as a development coach at his university.
Yeah, Westbrook was really going to take a leaning 3 with 10 seconds on the game clock 6 feet behind the line. That should totally be a shooting foul.
If you are projected to be a first round NBA pick, first three rounds of NFL draft pick, or similar for other sports, you go get that money. You get enough guaranteed to afford like 10 years of education at the school of your choice while still living comfortably from the guaranteed money in that rookie contract.
I don't know if a core of Randle, Russell, and Ingram is enough.
I could see 2012-2013 Westbrook taking that shot.

Seeing what Kibner posted reinforces my thought that they should be paid seeing how volatile and unsteady it can be for athlete.
