The Pistons have the best defense in the NBA despite their center (Drummond) being a terrible defender and their other starters being Ish Smith, Tobias Harris, Marcus Morris, and KCP.

Unless you are Anthony Davis then you will occasionally miss two weeks for dunking so hard and breaking your hand.

I've always been under the impression that they slam their fingers/palm in the hoop and it hurts like hell. Guess not.

I mean if you're doing it right and since these are supreme athletes in the NBA, their hand will be way above the cylinder and kinda shoving the ball into the cylinder. It's their forearm/wrist that usually takes the brunt of the rim.
I don't get how players can land on their butts from like 6 feet up in the air and not have it be an issue.
Same reason at 31 years old I can play a single pickup game, take two shots, and somehow tweak my back. Pro athletes are pretty much another species.

i've only ever jammed my ring finger on my right hand. i guess it's something about how i go after a ball cause if i play football or basketball there's a decent chance that finger is getting jammed.

In most sports leagues it is. And you can be forced to cut them or be refused the right to play.
Basketball skips quite a few laws about some stuff by pretending it's a non-contact sport though.
They do make you cut them if you swipe someone but they don't inspect the nails of the players every game..
