this is probably my first thread on a forum in months, maybe even year(s)
Anyways, how do you guys deal with people who use words they shouldn't? I think since I've grown out of my period of youth where I was unknowingly insensitive to all, I've wised up and tighten my lexicon to greater result. Should I be bothered when my boss uses words like retarded? (I wasn't but I told him that's kinda of a fucked up word to use, he looked at me with dull eyes.) or when someone uses raped as a term of domination in gaming? Throughout the years these were former traits I had, but I learned. Am I some holier than thou asshole who shouldn't worry about correcting people in that instance?
Since I have "joined" the FGC I've notice an opposition to the so-called "SJW" attitude in some circles of the fgc. But I don't get it? I haven't been able to get my friend to stick around because of some attitudes, but how could I blame her? They say now a days people look to get offended but I don't get that when it's just common respect not to use such attitudes for some people. Is respect that hard? Or is it just a grey morality that someone is infringing on another person's freedom to use that language and attitude? What balance is required in the end?

i'd really just worry about setting clear lines in the sand regarding your own tolerances rather than trying to see who or what's group describes you best. that's all you can control after all.

Anyway, I have eliminated "rape" from my vocabulary when it comes to gaming, but then there's still "owned," which honestly is another form of possession/have your way with/rape. It's just less controversial and "triggering."
I dropped "faggot" from my vocabulary, but I still call things "gay," like when people random in AP DotA games or pick Jugg (in this current patch). "That hero is gay" I'll say.
I don't really use "profanity." In fact, I have a profanity filter on all of my internet browsers at home. While my surfing is now more pleasurable, it has also exacerbated how far we've come from "men of letters" in the 19th century to the everyday lexicon of the plebeian. When I go to other message boards where profanity is allowed, and most posts are filled with "$%&#" rather than actual words, I no longer wonder why so many people stuck at writing. <br/><br/>I call my own son a punk. Because sometimes he just is. "You had your Wii time today and now you're going around harassing your brother and sister. Stop being such a punk!" <br/><br/>

Well, to answer the OP more directly, I believe that humanity is pretentious when it comes to caring, or as you say, "respect." Much of "our" outrage when it comes to social justice (thanks Moris) stems from wanting to look down "our" noses upon people (for example, not to say that it isn't deserved, but skepticism of police post-Ferguson) rather than simply correct the wrong to the benefit of everyone. Since we're all experienced on That Other Forum, how many times can you remember an OT topic that celebrated goodness for goodness sakes rather than goodness-while-giving-haters-the-middle-finger?
Another way of putting this is when people say "Zero ****s given," you should believe them. I'm no Catholic or fan of the Pope, but when he said that people were selfish (in regards to not having kids) I thought he was on point.
We are indeed selfish, and in your case, the inconvenience of selecting different words was too much for that person to tolerate, OP.

Yea, I guess it's about handling it as situation comes. But I feel like non-progressive people play victimization a lot more than others. Ones to avoid.
I tend to avoid using a lot of wordage which is deemed (rightfully so) inappropriate.
There's just no need to say 'that's gay', you can describe something in the same manner (i.e. being stupid) without using that word in a negative connotation. Whenever I hear people describe something as being gay, it does sound as if you're assuming that being gay is stupid, which much be a pretty annoying thing to her as someone who belongs to that community. In general, I try to not use words that are ultimately disrespectful to a group of people. I wouldn't want people to toss racial slurs so loosely for example, it's an uncomfortable feeling. I'd imagine it's the a different group of people as well.
