Finished this the other week in a short time. God damn it was depressing. It gave me serious The Vegetarian vibes and somehow caused an even bigger stir in Korea when it released than that book it. The patriarchal establishment in Korea was fuming at it.
It tells the story of Kim Jiyoung who is basically a stand in for the average woman in Korea and goes through her life and the various trials and tribulations that a woman would go through in modern-day Korea. There’s a lot more to it than that but yeah, really good and when I finished it I was pretty angry.
By Hitch Go To PostReading Order of the PhoenixHe's a bit stupid in all the books really. Impulsive, easy to anger and incredibly arrogant in certain situations. Essentially an accurate portrayal of a 15 year old teen.
Harry is really, really fucking stupid in this one.
By sy Go To Postharry is a really, really boring protagonist.I think he's okay but Rowling can't help but give him a coating of Teflon that makes him suffer as a character. None of the mistakes that he makes have lasting consequences until Sirius' death, and even then he doesn't blame himself for it for long at all.
And I think Quidditch would have been somewhat interesting if he wasn't a prodigy at it as well, as it is I could never be bothered with it. The books are far and away at their best when they're either exploring the past, or when magic is the backdrop rather than the focus. Give me Dumbledore talking to the portraits in his office over a multi-page duel any day.
Still absolutely love reading them though, not sure I'll ever grow out of that. The foreshadowing is very well done. At the time I thought she was making up the big story beats as she went, but it's obvious now that she knew by and large how it would end, or did at least by the end of Goblet of Fire. Aside from the Hallows anyway, they always felt a bit bolted on to me.
Everything interesting about Harry happened before he was born or when he was an infant or is directly related to those events. Dude is a wet noodle. Hermione is the activist, ron doesn't exist. Harry wants to play quidditch and be a cop when he grows up. :/ I can't even think of something I like about him except for freeing Dobby( but not giving af about all the elf slaves)
Maybe that was the point, but I don't think making a uncompelling protag is ever a good idea. Like you said, he doesn't struggle with much of anything, nothing he does carries much weight, blegh.
HP is one of the few series I read as a kid, so I have a tiny soft spot in there but between the books, jk rowling, and the terrible movies. I'm comfortable calling the whole franchise trash outside of Alfonso Cuaron's PoA.

Just bought this on Amazon on sale for $3.99CAD, I’ve heard good things. Also, has anyone tried The Story Graph as an alternative to GoodReads? It’s fairly new.
Finished this yesterday. Honestly not sure what I thought of it but I think I enjoyed it? I enjoyed the perspective from the other two but the main girl’s story I didn’t really. No clue how authentic the depiction of society in Modi’s India so that probably is colouring my perception. The prose itself is so plain but I did enjoy the differences in syntax from the three perspectives.
Now that I’m done I’m very excited to start Interior Chinatown. Heard so many good things.
I got gifted a bunch of Urban Legends books from a friend of mine for Christmas.
Japanese, Australian, Eastern Europe etc etc .. and one big ass book only covering Alabama.

I’ve been reading this as part of a book club at work and almost finished. Excellent read, and goes to show that there’s so little that most Canadians and Americans know about their history and native people.
Well folks, it's been a long road, but I have been writing a 6 books fantasy series for about 10 years now. Finally, I have gotten it all together and I am taking a shot at digital self-publishing in about a month (as long as all the Amazon business stuff lines up)
Now, I am in the final polishing stage, and I am looking a few ARC (advance review copy) readers to give feedback and maybe catch a typo or two. But most importantly feedback.
I have been super lowkey about it. I wasn't even sure if I was really going to do it, but somehow I did and here I am.
Anyways, I am hoping to diversity my readers so if anyone is willing to give up a little time it would be super appreciated.
here is a google doc I have been using for my ARC readers.

so if anyone can, just fill out the form and I will shoot you a copy
Thanks!

Thanks guys! It has been crazy. There is a lot to learn still about the whole process. It makes sense when I think about it, but it is a lot like games, or other forms of entertainment. That is why getting some alpha readers is so important.
By Lupercal Go To PostShit Blackace, this is huge!Wow, that would be huge. You can also use any type of tablet, if you have access to one.
I'll see if I can borrow an ereader and help you out.
if my ipad hadn't stopped working, I'd have read it. It would have been my first book in over a decade
By sy or die trying Go To Postif my ipad hadn't stopped working, I'd have read it. It would have been my first book in over a decadeI appreciate the thought! It is crazy to think I used to read a novel a week 10 years ago, but now I hardly read at all, because I feel guilty that I am not working on my stuff.
Congrats Blackace!!
Can't even imagine how fulfilling it must be, to be able to put it all together after 10 years.
Have never been involved with any ARC, but I'll try my best to provide any feedback that I might have.

By Koko Go To PostCongrats Blackace!!Yeah, it had been surreal, exciting, frustrating, and nerve-racking all at the same time. I have been super close to release for about 2 months now, and the final business side of stuff tripped us up a bit. But I learned a lot about what I need to be doing, so the delay seemed to work out for me.

Thank you, really for helping out, it really means a lot to me.
I will mail it to you tonight (Japanese time)
I read a lot on my phone via websites or PDFs, would be happy to give it a read if there is such an option available. Don't know anything about advance reviewing though

By Perfect Blue Go To PostCheers man will do.Awesome, I fired it off. Just let me know that opened on your device without any problems.
Edit: filled it out.
I’d fill out the form but I don’t really have a way to read it digitally so I’ll just wait until later and support you financially.
Unfortunately I can't commit to a full read so I didn't fill in the doc, but I'll try, as Espi, to support you financially by buying a digital edition whenever it comes out.

By blackace Go To Post🙌🏾Just finished it, had a lot of fun with it, specially with the Prologue and second half of the book.

One thing I really like is how "natural" the different types of races felt to the world.
Would share my full thoughts and notes once I get a chance this weekend.
