complete cheese, but i got this thing about never leaving a series unfinished
By harSonHow's the reading thread going to start out shorter than a haiku
I'm trying to start writing a short but I can't figure it out. I'll make the OT prettier later on.
Man i keep hearing you guys talk about the new jim crowe but i already got so many books on the backburner.
By chertiprosCurrently reading "how to be black " by babatunde thurston, "empire of sin: sex jazz and murder and the battle of new orleans" by Gary Krist and "Big money" by kenneth p vogel.

That was a fun read
By reiloI started reading Ready Player One last summer but stopped right when it got really fascinating and interesting. I'll need to finish it.This is on my to read list. I was supposed to pick it up a week ago. I might read it after the new jim crowe for a little escapism.
I'm going to finally read The Killing Joke soon I think though.

As far as 'classic' Batman stories go, I wasn't that impressed with that one, though it might have something to do with the fact that I generally find Alan Moore's work to be emotionally detached.

But that's Batman in many ways. :P

I don't agree with that. Read Year One, or watch B:TAS's best episodes. And it's not that Moore doesn't make the attempt; it's just that stuff that is supposed to inspire pathos in The Killing Joke falls flat to me
By IWMTB19I'm reading The New Jim Crow and Thinking Fast and Slow but it's going super slowly since I don't have enough time :/. TFaS is definitely great, especially if you haven't read any of Kahneman's prior papers.

I need to read the New Jim Crow. I started Thinking Fast and Slow but haven't had time to go back to it. I lost my Kindle which makes me sad :(
In between, I've been reading some poems by Wallace Stevens. Dude knew language.
A few days ago. Pretty good it's only 32 pages so it's something you can easily finish in a day.

I followed politics so closely during the 2008 and 2012 campaign cycles so I'm excited to delve deeper into the inner workings. I'm a fan of his because he's very idealistic and a real genuine guy it seems which is very strange in the world of politics.
I love this world he's created but goddamn I shouldn't need a redbull to read your book
By DY_nastyFrank Herbert is such a drag lol

I'm rereading Dune, myself. I find myself annoyed with the sort of hand-wavey stuff about special ways of speaking or whatever. It feels like fantasy with science fiction trappings.

I enjoyed the first three, maybe four books of Dune. I tried the Butlerian Jihad books written by his son and they were not very very good.
By Retro Go To Post About halfway through Kafka on the Shore.
I guess I've been enjoying it so far
My favourite Murakami book. I am actually curious about how you fin the last quarter of the book. Some fucked up shit is going down.

Nowadays, I only really read SF/F books. Used to be that I would go through 250+ books a year, but now with work and life, I'll be lucky to break 100.
Jesus Christ. 250+? How on earth!
By giririsss Go To Post Reading For Whom the Bell Tolls - Hemmingway
Needed a break from all the heavy fantasy books i read.
Loved it. But I pretty much love everything of his I've read.
Just finished Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Currently reading Light in August by Faulkner

I really love this book
By DY_nasty Go To PostStarted reading The Alchemist and its not at all what I expected. Its fun though.
What did you expect?
Have you read any other Coelho or is this your first bit if exposure?
For what it is, it's easily one of my favorite books ever.
By Vahagn Go To PostWhat did you expect?I expected boring prose and needless exposition. This is probably my biggest surprise in a while.

By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostCan anyone recommend any great kafkaesque novels out there. The more surreal the better. Something like Murakami.Have you read anything by Abe Kobo?
I don't consider Murakami to be Kafkaesque per se, but Abe certainly is.
By Hitch Go To PostIs Treasure Island decent for adults? It seems like it's been more than a week since you first asked this. If you'd've picked it up at the library and started reading it, you could tell us the answer by now.
And it's been at least a month. My Mum said she couldnt remember, and it got ignored when I asked in the footy thread. This is why I never ask questions, I only get let down
By Hitch Go To PostLibrary pfftI responded in the footy thread....

It can't be more than a fiver, and I'm sure it'll be a quick, painless read. Just get it. Not every book you read will be the best thing you've ever read. I read terrible books quite often. I'm reading one right now, in fact.

Thanks, I was hoping you would answer.
Anything you would recommend to start with?
