“I want pick-and-roll every time down,” Rose said after his 17-point, one-assist performance.
“You see with Cleveland, they run pick-and-roll the entire game and [create] mismatches and close outs, and them driving the ball and making someone else commit and pitching out for a three,” said Rose, a former league MVP. “That’s something we have to keep doing.”
“In the triangle sometimes, you’re going to the corner,” Rose said. “As the point guard, that’s tough sometimes going all the way to the corner and kind of waiting to see what they’re going to do on the initial side of the triangle. You have to wait for the ball to come back to you.
We one game in yall...
By jjasper Go To PostTime for the annual tradition of losing on opening night.I actually expect the Wolves to win this game tonight.
I don't even know who I am anymore.

We should start the season 0-6. The next 6 games after that are much more manageable. Not that we will win any, but our odds of doing so are greater.

SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LEARN THE OFFENSE BEFORE YOU THROW CRITICISMS AT IT.

He was complaining about having to learn it in the summer league. At least feign an effort. It's not like it's going away.

By Dark PhaZe Go To PostYou can run pick and roll out of the triangle. He's not complaining about that. He's complaining about the option play where the point guard just stands in the corner.
Isn't that right 3SP?
By MyBackIsBroken Go To PostHe's in a contract year & trying to get a max….fuck all that triangle shitFor real. It's an offense that minimizes the use of point guards and generally makes them shoot spot up jumpers and cut to the basket.
It's basically all wrong for Rose. Not that really any offense is right for him at this point in his career.
If you're gonna hitch your wagon to Rose as your 30-35mpg starting point guard, then a pick-and-roll heavy offense is probably what you should be running. Having him stand in the corner to wait for an option play or run around screens for a spot up jumpshot is so wrong for his skillset -- at least what little is left of it.
To be fair, he can punish closeouts and kick it out to others. It's not exactly ideal for his skillset but it has the potential to work well at times.
They need better pick discipline in general. Rose launching himself past picks to create an offensive foul because Kristaps wasn't set, or Melo waiting for a pick only to turn it down at the last second and throw up garbage--that stuff is awful

I am no expert on the triangle but couldn't they use Rose like Kobe or MJ? And have Lee be the corner guy? That would allow Rose to have the ball in his hands more no?
That would only work if Rose was a good mid-range shooter and a good post-up guard, which he's not. Kobe and MJ were elite at it.

ahh makes sense. But can't be any worse than sticking him in the corner
We really gonna act like Melo and Jennings and Porzingis aren't on the team?
Rose wants the ball in his hands every play and hates playing off ball. Doesn't matter whether that's the corner or the wing, it's the same concept.
It's the Jimmy Butler shit all over again.
Triangle makes pieces interchangeable. Sometimes rose will be the ball guard and sometimes it will be melo or Jennings or Lee or Holiday or whoever else. Rose's issue is and has always been that he's a horrible off ball player and can't adjust.

Right. So why trade for him? Everyone knows his deficiencies. If you're gung ho about making it work with Rose as your PG, why run an offense that doesn't make any fucking sense for your roster? The triangle mandate is fucking dumb if you consistently bring in the wrong players for the system. But old dogs and new tricks etc.

I mean, they replaced Calderon. It's not like it's not an upgrade. He's just a super duper knucklehead.
Again, any PG in today's NBA plays off ball. Even Guys like Curry and Paul let others run the offense and set screens and spot up for shots to keep the defense honest. Even if they scrapped the offense entirely, they are still going to do melo isolations and plays for porzingis and let Noah facilitate some and let Jennings dominate the ball.
He's basically bitching that he has to space the floor sometimes. That's some shit.
By reilo Go To PostBecause let's act like he's the only player that's criticized the triangle offense in New York?He has like one month of experience at it.
This is my main complaint at Galloway not being resigned, Knicks now have zero guards with experience running any form of Triangle, and yes Sasha doesn't count. It's one thing to not have any PGs who know how to operate in it, but no guards at all? It's like they are right back where they started a few years ago learning the "modified" system again. Rose's comment just shows how ignorant he is in terms of knowing the system, since you easily can run PnR out of it, does he honestly not remember doing that shit in Chicago? I remember Thibs using Triangle concepts and running PnR a lot.

Fucking seriously. Thibs ran tons of triangle.
Are we sure Schroder is good?
That's a lot of money for a guy I'm not convinced is a full time starter.

Derrick Rose is the absolutely wrong player for the triangle offense. In fact, I'd say most of the makeup of the entire roster is. That's totally on Phil Jackson. If you want to make it work with these players, then don't mandate the triangle. If you want to mandate the triangle, then don't try to make it work with these players. Derrick Rose, from his perspective, and from anyone sane's perspective is not wrong in this instance. He was brought in to be their starting PG and they're putting him in a position for the type of player he is where he won't succeed.
This is all on Phil's shoulders if it doesn't pan out unless he does the correct thing and allow Hornacek to run an offense that makes sense for the makeup of the team.

I don't even get the insistence on the triangle. Why sign certain players and not work to their actual strengths?
Rose isn't gonna magically become a dependable shooter in his 8th year in the league after all the injuries he's been through. That's the only way he could make it work in the triangle. I could be wrong -- Jason Kidd is a notable exception -- but I wouldn't bank on it. Somehow though, the Knicks are hoping for it. Dumb.
For Rose it's not a matter of "learning the triangle" -- it's a matter of learning how to fucking shoot. He's just not that player.

Dude, you're acting as if 1) they don't run pick and roll 2) other offenses don't space the floor by putting guards in the corner and 3) they don't have other guys capable of creating plays.
Darrick rose is a knucklehead that wants the ball 100% if the time, that's not an offense problem.
"I want pick and roll all game"
"It's tough because you have to wait for the ball to come back to you"
Is not a problem of the offense. Besides which. THEY DIDNT RUN THE TRIANGLE LAST NIGHT.
Okay. Let's see how good the Knicks will be running an offense where Derrick Rose stands in the corner like an off-guard ready to shoot a three pointer is gonna play out. Let's also see how opposing defenses will react to that scheme.
I think I already know the answer.

Yea clearly.
But "let's not get melo or porzingis or anyone else any touches unless Rose gets doubled on the drive" isn't a sound offense either.
I mean it's not as if the triangle is asking him to dominate in the pinch post. They're asking him to Space the floor while others have the ball and he's bitching. That's some shit
Interesting, but there probably would have been some minor bidding war for Schroeder in the off-season.

The triangle is outdated in today's NBA, and Derrick Rose skill set does not fit said outdated system. 1 game or 20 games it wont matter.
Phil is probably running the long game of collecting mega checks and prob already has a contract in place with LA tbh

It's isn't even a matter of that, really. I don't think Hornacek has figured out what the Knicks base offense is with Rose on the court, which is kinda why some thought Jennings would start until Rose got some reps in practice. I will agree with 3SP though, yesterday I didn't see much of any Anthony high post action at all. That's concerning because besides Sasha (lol), Carmelo was one of the guys who made sure KP got fed last year. If Knicks. Also where was the Noah high post action, dude is a fantastic passer and I hardly saw that utilized.
I'm not going to go crazy over one game against the Cavs, but there were some things you kinda expect to see in the O that didn't happen. One thing Hornacek did stress is they won't run much Triangle this year. Ok that's fine then; but what will he run? What is the base component of the offense? We won't know that for awhile.

Cuz Calderon was their starter and no one anticipated him bitching after one game
Because Derrick Rose is the only option available in a league where good PGs are abundant?
"Guys, Jose Calderon sucks. We can admit it now. I guess it's time we trade for Derrick Rose."
"Good call. I don't see any other potential solutions to our PG problem."
"Nope, me either."

Could have gotten some other PGs, maybe even some up and coming ones to chill with Poz and without sacrificing as much as they did too. But whatevs.
Knicks stay in "we need results now" mode and continually fuck their own rebuilds up.

A) I reject the notion that rose wouldn't fit in the triangle if he wasn't a primadonna bitch
B) They barely run the triangle at all, and considering how effective Melo and Porzingis and Noah are in the post it would be dumb to abandon it entirely anyway
C) How many PG's of Rose's caliber had 1 year deals and could be had for the package they gave up?
D) Rose isn't even actually complaining about the triangle, he's complaining about having to stand in the corner and wait to get the ball. Which would happen in any offense in 2016.
