By Ciaran Go To PostPoorly worded, what I meant is that Yakuza is its natural successor and it improved upon it's formula already? No.
or at least it always seemed that way to me
They share some similarities due the setting and some systems and you can clearly see that Nagoshi (the main guy behind Yakuza) was part of the Shenmue team back in the day.
Apart from that, they're not really connected and Yakuza is certainly not build upon Shenmue.
Bonus picture from Nagoshi and his transformation over time.

what a shame :( I've been meaning to play Yakuza
By Ciaran Go To Postwhat a shame :( I've been meaning to play YakuzaThere is nothing shameful about it :P You should play it.
Both are great, Yakuza has it's own identity and is a pretty great series.
A few flaws here and there, some things aren't really made for everyone and it's obviously very japan centric.

he's only 22 though
By Mister0079 Go To Posthe's only 22 thoughVerratti is almost 24 and he's exactly the same limited, hot-cold player he was at Pescara. Not every talented young player is destined to 'grow' m8.
