By obijkenobiBy KingGondoSo… apparently we signed Nick Collison to an extension.
That's pretty surprising, honestly. Thought this might be his last season.
2 years for 8 million. Why?
Because Presti can't help himself. I'm sure there'll be some line about "loyalty" in the press release as James Harden snares loudly.

The thunder could of offered him a FO or coaching job or something. I mean why pay him more when its likely his production is going to be less? Even worse why give him 2 years?

By thekadThey didn't want to give Harden that $4 million.harden doesn't have loyalty and leadership!
By Zeus Ex MachinaAs long as it doesn't affect the surrounding roster moves we make (and it won't) I really don't mind the extension. As I was reading this entire page I was thinking "KD's not stupid, he's going to see all the bad trades, the missed opportunities, squandering away Harden for 5 million. He's gone"
Then that tweet! Good lord. Ether.

I'm firmly of the belief that KD has some input into the decision-making process and certain management moves. Nick has been on KD's team every year and I'm sure he wants him to stick around. Scott Brooks is still the coach because KD made it known that he wanted him to stay (*shakes fist at KD*).
Makes me worry about the Perk situation. KD has said in the past that Perk is like a big brother to him.
If Billy King is dumb enough to hang on to Bropez, I could see us making some kind of smaller trade involving Lamb/Jones/Jerrett/Jackson and re-signing Perk to a smaller deal next summer. :(

So did Lebron though. I'm not saying he's leaving, but all the stuff about loyalty and "he's playing with all his friends" and all that happened in Lebron with Cleveland and it's happened with other superstars too. If your team doesn't chip before he's a free agent, there's easily a 50/50 chance he leaves.

His passing (especially his off the dribble bounce passing) and his defense have been otherworldly for years now. If he can have an injury free career going forward he's going to finish pretty high up in assists and steals.

Giving Colllison 8M per for 2 years is ridiculous. I don't think Gondo is, or anyone can, justify that from a pure production / basketball view.
The only way it makes sense is if KD also pushed for it. For all we know KD really is about keeping those guys who are loyal to him around him, even if it costs him a chance at a title. i.e. he'd rather be happy playing basketball than unhappy winning chips.
If the cap jumps as much as expected it's not really going to make a huge difference. But they're the sort of contracts that hold you back in the long run.

I'm OK with it because it's extremely unlikely to hinder any roster moves over the next two seasons, and it's also intended to send a message to KD and YNB that we take care of those who are loyal to the organization.
It's also worth noting that only his minutes are down and not his per 36 production.

If KD wants to leave, he'll leave and take Collison with him like Lebron did with Big Z.

Giving Collison several million more than what he's worth is fine because it won't hinder future moves, not giving Harden a couple more million that he deserves....to maintain future flexibility.

Some form of the rumored Perk for Bropez deal happens by the deadline. Avatar of the winner's choice.
By MorisGiving Collison several million more than what he's worth is fine because it won't hinder future moves, not giving Harden a couple more million that he deserves….to maintain future flexibility. There were rumors that Harden wanted a no-trade clause or a guarantee of a starting role to take the Thunder's offer (contrary to his "I just want to win, I'll do whatever it takes" public remarks). Presti told him he'd be traded if he didn't accept the (large) offer (that would have put us into the tax) on the table, and James called Presti's bluff.
Lots happened during those negotiations that we don't know about. It was about more than money, it was about who makes decisions for the team and who has control. KD might be able to make demands like that, but not a guy who would have been the third banana. Loyalty is rewarded, and guys who don't show that get shipped out. I disagree with that approach to an extent, but I think that's what happened.
And I'll fully admit that we didn't get good value for him even if I think Adams is going to be really good

This seems like damage control. All of it. If Presti offers the full max, I don't think there's a person in the league that thinks Harden ends up in Houston.
In unrelated banter. Knicks Age - you ready for that W? I know Frankman is.
I feel fulfilled knowing I was there when Gondo defended this fukkery from the beginning.
This could only be better if Kevin Durant pulled a Willie Beamen and somehow ended up back in Seattle after a mid-press conference swerve session with George Karl

I'm okay with overpaying role players if you have a team that can contend, you can even use his huge contract (paired with a pick or young guy) to inject new talent after a season or two, but OKC's roster is ass. KD YNB and Ibaka are good players, Jackson is on the verge of being dealt and I doubt for more than peanuts. You can't win with the bums they surrounded their stars with.
Ibaka signed for 4 years, $49 million in August 2012.
Harden was offered 4 years, $55 million in October 2012.
Insulting.
