Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez killed in boating crash
Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed early Sunday in a boating crash, according to a baseball source.
Fernandez, 24, was originally scheduled to start Sunday, in what have been his likely final outing of the season.
Fernandez was the team’s first-round draft pick in 2011, was the National League rookie of the year in 2013. He was finishing up on his finest season in the majors.
The death leaves the team in shock. Along with outfield Giancarlo Stanton, he was the best player on the team and one of the top 10 in the league.
The Marlins issued a statement on Sunday: “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayer sare with his family at this very difficult time.”

holy fucking shit, what horrible news to wake up to for baseball fans everywhere. This dude was well on his way to a hall of fame career.
Dolphins going to have a moment of silence before todays game. Each MLB game will have a moment of silence and the Mets who we play tomorrow will also pay their respects.
Also just to report everything, 2 others died, both unknown at the time as their families are being contacted. Speed apparently a factor.

I can't believe Jose Fernandez is dead... I was a kid during the Steve Crews tragedy so I have a faint understanding of this, but a guy who has a legit star pitcher fulfilling his American dream... and was going to pitch against the Mets on Monday. I just can't believe this.
Loved Jose... Besides being a stud he just always loved the game. He wanted to win but never forgot he was blessed to be playing a game for a living.
I can't really think (right now) of another soul like his... Highly talented, highly engaged in staying in peak shape but always in love with life and the game...
Baseball lost a great man..

Yeah, just an incredibly sad story all around.
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostMust have been horrifying…this took place at night right?Yeah, from what it seems is they thought they were in the clear and which is why they were going as fast as they were. The jettys here aren't lit up, in fact a lot of the low lying bridges also aren't lit up. No alcohol or drugs found on board or around the area.
Stanton cried the entire top of the first in Right field.
Dee Gordon who was best friends with Jose just hit a leadoff homerun. His first HR of the season. Amazing. Took the first pitch with Joses helmet from the right side of the box, went to his natural left side and jacked the HR next pitch. Truly incredible.
Jose Fernandez autopsy finds cocaine in system on night of fatal accidenthttp://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2016/10/29/jose-fernandez-autopsy-cocaine-alcohol-boat-accident/92955710/
Florida Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez had cocaine and alcohol in his system when he and two friends were killed in a September boating accident, according to an autopsy report obtained by USA TODAY Sports on Saturday
Fernandez’s blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit, according to the toxicology results included in the report by the Miami-Dade County
Fernandez, 24, and his two friends, Jesus Macias, 27, and Eduardo Rivero, 25, were killed in the morning hours of Sept. 25 after the boat they were in hit a jetty off South Beach at high speeds. An investigation was launched to determine the events surrounding the accident, including which one of the three was piloting the boat.
Pretty much what people expected.
I didn't expect cocaine. MLB tests for it by random. The NHL has an issue with its players using it so they test twice a year if I'm remembering correctly.
Kind of a shame they are smearing his name in the mud at this point. Just let it be....
Now you got all these holier than thou assholes talking shit on social media.
