Not really, unless you suppose that HAL's programming explicitly allowed it to preserve itself at the expense of humans, which seems unlikely. Otherwise it just 'malfunctions' in the exact way which allows it to start killing people, which is highly unlikely. 2001 displays the common problem of the 'ghost in the machine', the conception that once intelligent, computers become just like conscious beings with 'free will', rather than programmed machines. Computers do not just become self aware, they do not just decide to do something, unless they are already programmed to do so.
