Texas going through a bit of a purge now. 3 different guys have transferred or got kicked off the team
The first year under Herman will be fascinating.
I expect them to be pretty dangerous. What are your expectations for next season?

By KingGondo Go To PostThe first year under Herman will be fascinating.I think they should win at least 8 games, but I'd hope they could at least flip one of the OU, OSU or TCU games. The talent and depth is finally there on both sides of the ball, so there are really no excuses this time.

By KingGondo Go To PostI'll admit, UT scares me a bit this year after what Herman did at Houston.Yeah he's walking into another favorable roster situation, also don't underestimate what Orlando was able to do on the defensive side at Houston. They won the that Louisville game by basically shutting Lamar Jackson down. Other than QB health, this season hinges on what Orlando is able to do with a secondary that was supposed to be a strength last year but ended up being terrible
I think Aggy already has Chad Morris lined up as a replacement. Sumlin wasted too much elite talent from 13-16 and their future outlook isn't looking too good. I think its time to go for him
Yeesh. Chad Morris hasn't done much at SMU.
By the way, I really wish Aggy and you guys would start playing again. That was a great Thanksgiving tradition.

There has to be more to this story than just "I was ready to hang it up" or whatever. Maybe health concerns? Or something to do with disciplinary problems?
And Riley strikes me as a strange replacement. Could work, but he's still only 33.

Kingsbury statement on Stoops -
Bob Stoops is one of the greatest college football coaches to ever walk the sideline. It was an honor to play and coach against him. I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors and golf game.
Tech picked up 10 commits in the last 8 days with a grand total of 3 P5 offers that weren't Tech itself.

We're coming for ALL your G5 recruits!
Meanwhile in Dirt Burglar Land, the diehards are all-in on Lincoln Riley because he's started well in recruiting. Paying him over $3 million and I've heard fans talk about beating tOSU at the Horseshoe.
I think they're about to learn a lesson in just how hard it is to replace a legend.
By KingGondo Go To PostThat is depressing. What's your prediction for Tech's record this season? For record, hoping for at least 7 wins and I think it's doable. That 7 win hope is arrived at totally separately from the fact that 7 wins probably saves Kingsbury's job, which I don't currently have a good answer for as to whether I think that's a good thing or bad thing.
Will probably need about 2 games out of the "@home upset" group of you, TCU, and KSU or the neutral site game against transition season Baylor, as @WVU, @UT, and @OU likely just aren't going to happen. Starting the season 4-1 is very realistic but there are a lot of possible losses there as well. Eastern Washington was 12-2 last season and FCS upsets happen every season, Arizona State mauled us last season despite them not being very good, Houston is @Houston, you're a better team right now period, and we always play like garbage @Kansas (and I'm a believer in their new direction under Beaty). Eastern Washington and Arizona State are probably the easiest out of the group IMO, edging out UH and KU with the fact that they're in Lubbock and the latter two are away.
For recruiting, I think they're just going for guys they think can play, that we can land, and that we can hold onto, and not wasting time on the game-breaker/higher rated/more sought after guys just yet. reposting from the other site -
At least most of the guys we're getting are talking about being in contact with other P5 schools, so the guess is that we're raiding the second tier of players that other P5 schools are going to start to offer once they miss out on the top tier, with the hope that us getting in so early makes their commitments stick once other teams come calling.
If that's the case, it's probably not a bad strategy for this particular year, coming off a losing season with a 5th year hot-seat head coach. Don't have much to sell the big time recruits until we hopefully start winning some games this fall.
We've also got a few textbook "under the radar" type guys committed (eg one didn't move to Texas until a few months ago, one was injured all season as a junior, etc.) so hopefully some of those will pay off.
I think this is Kliff's last year personally, unless that defense improves and they have a reasonable facsimile of Mahomes to take over from him.
Any signs of life from the D or from the QB situation?
Any signs of life from the D or from the QB situation?
What the D needs most is DEs that can play. Couldn't stop off-tackle runs last season, couldn't rush the passer. Our run defense up the middle was actually not all that bad. Signed a billion JUCO DBs this offseason so we should be getting some help there. DE is what it all hinges on. Some added depth should help get some guys to more natural positions than what they were forced to play last season.
There's nothing about Kingsbury's coaching career so far to make us worry about what will happen at QB. He hasn't had a starting QB yet that has finished college and and not been drafted, and in his first season at Tech he rode two oft-injured rotating true freshman to over 5,000 yards passing combined. The OL is a bigger concern.

By KingGondo Go To PostWhat's KU's ceiling as a program? Hard to imagine they could reattain the heights of the Mangino era. They've got a decent resource base. Good sized endowment, flagship school in their state, and with basketball their athletics revenue is right at or near the top of the conference other than OU and UT.
Problem is that they're not near a recruiting hotbed, don't have any history to sell, and don't have fan support. This is why I liked the Beaty hire for them; good recruiter IMO with a lot of history in Texas, and you can put together a pretty damn good team with nothing but 3-stars from Texas.
KU football was probably more likely to become what KSU is than KSU, honestly, but the Wildcats lucked into a Hall of Fame coach that never wanted to leave. They may have had something similar in Mangino until he got himself fired (I don't recall why he was still there for 2 seasons after the BCS season instead of getting hired away to a bigger name).
in theory KU could be good...but it's KU you know?
still waiting on UNC to crack that glass ceiling into the ACC elite with Clemson and FSU. since Mitch left before we expected then we're kicking the can at least 2 or 3 years down the road there.
would be nice to win a conference title. or win bowl games regularly. or actually make a BCS bowl.
so yeah i saw all that to say that yeah KU could be good. but then good isnt good enough.
i grew up on the Torbush and Bunting era UNC teams and i thought i'd be happy with UNC getting 8-9 wins a year but NOPE!
if only Butch could've kept the dirty work hidden a little more. he had us set.

goddamnit Zamir's going to UGA.
i don't know what the fuck is up with these top NC running backs. they all want to play for fucking Georgia. Gurley, Keith Marshall. now this guy. wtf.

Looks like we're getting a DB transfer from Washington, Trevor Walker. Seems like we've added about a thousand upperclassman DBs this offseason between JUCOs, grad transfers, and prior transfers that sat out 2016.
Hope you guys can turn it around. The Big 12 is better when there's a solid middle class of competitive teams.
By KingGondo Go To PostHope you guys can turn it around. The Big 12 is better when there's a solid middle class of competitive teams. If we had even the 100th ranked defense last season instead of 128th we could have realistically had 9 wins, sadly. Kansas State, Texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State were all one score games. 854 yards of offense and 59 points against Oklahoma and we lost.
Wouldn't have saved us from the all around garbage we put out there against Arizona State and Iowa State, though. Margin of defeat against ISU alone was about 2.5 times the margin of all 4 games above combined.

He looked promising, just couldn't get on the field because our DB room is just disgustingly deep with talent. I would guess he'll be a solid player for you guys.
In other news:
By cdyhybrid Go To PostI would guess he'll be a solid player for you guys.
Hope so, but as mentioned in my previous post there is a lot of "new" competition in our DB corps right now so it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
1 transfer eligible immediately (Walker)
1 transfer that sat out 2016 and is eligible this season for the first time
4 2017 JUCO signees
3 2017 high school signees
6 of those 9 players are upperclassmen that came in to play immediately. Likely only have 1 guy you can write in pen in our entire set of 5 starting DBs (though at least one of the CB JUCOs is close).
By KingGondo Go To PostI honestly expected more composure when Pristine was finally able to ask his question.Truth be told, when I saw the link to that earlier today I only got about 10-12 seconds in before I decided I didn't care enough to watch it. Any Tech relation aside, I don't really like cringe videos and that one had all the hallmarks early on. Now that I've watched it it doesn't go the direction I thought it would, I expected the guy to be a bit more all in from the descriptions I read. Good on Kliff to just laugh it off, the guy clearly didn't even want an answer and was just trying to make Kliff look bad.
🤔🤔🤔
Edit: Aaaand he resigned. Apparently it was recently discovered that he called an escort from a school phone.
Hahahahaha fuck Ole Miss.
I've been bitter ever since they beat us out for Laquon Treadwell by paying him.

Picked up a transfer from SMU in WR Xavier Castille. I remember him being a guy that a lot of Tech fans wanted to offer coming out of high school (and some staff at various recruiting sites REALLY liked him) but we put together a pretty salty WR class that year and he was lost in the shuffle. Fast forward to today and 2 of those guys have transferred and another is now a TE/FB so this is a good pickup.
I think he was strongly considering us toward the end of his recruitment, or he was committed then went to SMU for some reason.
By KingGondo Go To PostI think he was strongly considering us toward the end of his recruitment, or he was committed then went to SMU for some reason. He had a fair number of P5 offers to select from. I remember the SMU commitment being a bit curious at the time. One of those "was there some red flag we don't know about that caused all these schools to rescind?" type situations.
I'm trying not to let the annual kool-aid fest that is fall camp, but if there's one thing I'm sure of looking down the new roster it's that it will be nice to see a defense that at least has the height and weight of a P5 defense for the first time in a while.
For the first year in a while we shouldn't have linebackers and rush ends playing defensive end, or defensive ends playing defensive tackle, etc. All but 2 DBs in the projected 2-deep are listed 190+, and all but 3 are listed 6'0"+. We can actually field 3 decent, natural linebackers that are all 230 pounds or more and I can't remember the last time that happened.
Hopefully they can actually play like a real defense instead of just looking like one.

Oklahoma just dismissed their 2017 QB signee for "violating team rules." Apparently he was an early enrollee and got arrested for public intoxication after their Spring Game. Guess he didn't learn his lesson.
