in contest with own wife, ray rice finally manages to improve his YPC; is still tackled for a loss by elevator
Ravens running back Ray Rice knocked his fiancee unconscious in an altercation at an Atlantic City casino over the weekend, according to a complaint filed by police, who said Wednesday that they have referred the case to county prosecutors for review.
The revelation came as a video clip showing the aftermath of the incident was posted online. The 50-second video, obtained by the website TMZ, shows Rice lifting fiancee Janay Palmer by her arms out of an elevator in the Revel Casino and laying her on the ground. She appears limp as he pulls her legs away from the elevator's doors and props her up.
Contacted about the allegations in the summons, Rice's Philadelphia-based attorney, Michael Diamondstein, declined to comment. Earlier in the day, he said the online video clip was authentic but incomplete.
"The video that has been put up by TMZ shows the very end of what transpired between Ray and his fiancee," said Diamondstein, who said he and Rice would "not try this case in the media."
"We are confident that by the time all of the facts are in the open, the public will have a complete and true picture of what actually transpired, and we just ask that the public remember what a high-character, good person Ray is, and that they reserve judgment until all the facts are out."
An attorney for Palmer could not be reached.

bill belichick takes pity on perennially incompetent, unemployed general manager mike lombardi, hires him as an aid
Former Cleveland Browns general manager Mike Lombardi has been hired by the New England Patriots as an assistant to the coaching staff, the team announced Thursday.
Lombardi traveled with Patriots coach Bill Belichick, vice president of player personnel Nick Caserio and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to the NFL combine in Indianapolis. His connection with Belichick goes back to the early 1990s, when Belichick was the Browns' coach and Lombardi worked on Cleveland's personnel staff.
"Mike has a lot of experience. He's done a lot of things in his career in the NFL [and] I'm sure he'll be doing many of those things for us," Belichick said at the NFL combine. "We'll see how it goes."

Mangenius to coach tight ends with the 49ers; 49ers guaranteed to beat patriots should they meet in super bowl
Eric Mangini is officially an NFL coach again, but the former defensive specialist is now firmly on the offensive side of the ball.
Mangini – a former head coach of the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns – will become the San Francisco 49ers' tight ends coach, the team announced Thursday. He joined the team in June as an offensive consultant, his approach being to help the offense from a defensive perspective.
Mangini said late in the season that he was open to anything moving forward. Reggie Davis will move from tight ends coach to co-assistant offensive line coach with Mike Solari.

holy crap at the harbaugh story though:
The Browns’ unpredictable head-coaching search nearly finished with what would have been the most unpredictable outcome of any head-coaching search since Jon Gruden was traded from the Raiders to the Buccaneers a dozen years ago.
Per multiple league sources, the Cleveland Browns nearly pulled off a trade with the 49ers for the rights to coach Jim Harbaugh.
A deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to San Francisco was in place between the teams. But Harbaugh ultimately decided not to leave the 49ers.
The 49ers could not immediately be reached for comment. Efforts to contact the 49ers continue.

NFL to adopt 15-yard penalty for use of racial slur?
John Wooten, head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance that monitors diversity in the NFL, said he expects the league's competition committee to enact a rule at the owner's meeting next month making it an automatic 15-yard penalty if a player uses the N-word on the field, with a second infraction meriting an ejection.
Wooten spoke about his desire to eradicate the word completely from NFL workplaces at the Fritz Pollard event during the combine, wanting it to be fineable and policed throughout team facilities, and received a standing ovation according to those in attendance. Wooten said he will continue being vigilant about this with the NFL office and Commissioner Roger Goodell.
"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do," Wooten said. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."
The NFL had no comment, but league sources did confirm that the idea of "respect" among teammates is a priority. The league is studying major changes to workplace policies in the wake of the Wells report, and Goodell and Troy Vincent from the league office have already met with 35 players to discuss issues of workplace conduct.

As someone who doesn't follow football, it does seem like a direct reaction to the Incognito incident. Enforcing that rule is gonna make them look silly. Imagining the response from fans and media if a team loses a game because a player used that word is making me cringe.
It was a crazy story but from what I gathered on the situation if Martin had a HR person or a mental health professional, this thing probably could have been solved with some mediation before ever hitting the public.

And, i'm not going to get into the whole history here, but won't there be a sub-section of black players that will says it's their right / heritage to be ABLE to call each other nigger?
Like, an anti group could really play this as a way by rich white owners to stamp out the history of the word etc.

Relentlessly determined to do nothing exciting whatsoever in the early days of free agency, the New York Giants on Thursday agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract with fullback Henry Hynoski.Seriously Reese, what the fuck?
Yeah, that's right. The Giants, who do not currently have a No. 1 wide receiver, a tight end or a starting center but do have a fullback, brought back Hynoski after he went to Detroit to visit with the Lions. Your guess is as good as mine what the heck the Giants are up to right now.
This is nothing against Hynoski, who's an excellent blocking fullback and, if fully recovered from his shoulder injury, should compete with John Conner for the fullback spot in training camp.
And it's really nothing against the move, which surely costs nothing, since I'm sure Hynoski could be cut without costing them much more than meal money if Conner beats him out.
I'm just kind of at a loss to explain why a team with so many needs seems to be doing so little to address them, while letting key pieces like Linval Joseph and Justin Tuck walk out the door.
The Giants' offseason plan seems to be based on the idea of getting younger (though letting the 25-year-old Joseph walk kind of kicks against that a bit) and building for the long term. And they have tried and failed to sign a number of players, including Tracy Porter, Jacoby Jones, Ted Ginn Jr. and others. But the way the Giants have operated these first three days is perplexing, and a Hynoski post felt like a decent spot to make that point. Carry on.
