Liu closed his eyes for a long moment and then said quietly, “This is why I don’t like to talk about subjects like this. The truth is you don’t really—I mean, can’t truly—understand.” He gestured around him. “You’ve lived here, in the U.S., for, what, going on three decades?” The implication was clear: years in the West had brainwashed me. In that moment, in Liu’s mind, I, with my inflexible sense of morality, was the alien.Oppression is preserved by jaded middle aged people
And so, Liu explained to me, the existing regime made the most sense for today’s China, because to change it would be to invite chaos. “If China were to transform into a democracy, it would be hell on earth,” he said. “I would evacuate tomorrow, to the United States or Europe or—I don’t know.” The irony that the countries he was proposing were democracies seemed to escape his notice. He went on, “Here’s the truth: if you were to become the President of China tomorrow, you would find that you had no other choice than to do exactly as he has done.”
It was an opinion entirely consistent with his systems-level view of human societies, just as mine reflected a belief in democracy and individualism as principles to be upheld regardless of outcomes. I was reminded of something he wrote in his afterword to the English edition of “The Three-Body Problem”: “I cannot escape and leave behind reality, just like I cannot leave behind my shadow. Reality brands each of us with its indelible mark. Every era puts invisible shackles on those who have lived through it, and I can only dance in my chains.”
And decades of cultural reinforcement. That's not limited to China
...and there are people who protested the tiananmen square events and suffered more than others who could ever understand who feel the exact same way. the idea that in order to make it past a certain turning point, the state made a call to end all dialogue with absolute violence with a result that has been, in the view of many, overall successful. Especially when the consequences were colored with the horrors previous generations had to endure. That frames perceptions a hell of a lot differently.
Obviously it's horrifying. Thankfully, we've never had to see anything close to that in our streets in our lifetime. When the west writes that check, another country has to cash it. "Check your privilege" as they say
I get it and Im as fuck ccp as any hot-blooded freedom loving me first individual but approaching things with yes/no mindsets and blunt force logic isn't enlightenment or raising awareness. It's validation.

By LFMartins86 Go To PostNot nearly as good as Castlevania and the animation is rough to say the least.
By Lupercal Go To PostNot nearly as good as Castlevania and the animation is rough to say the least. You can just call it what it is, a steaming pile of dog shit.
By sy Go To Posthard to imagine animation rougher than castlevania's lolWan under a budget, it was ok. Prioritized detail over framerate, probably as Netflix wasn't giving them the beaucoup bucks yet. The Isaac sequence in S3 tho?
By Not Go To PostWan under a budget, it was okshoot, from what I've seen they could have just colored his boards and it would have been better than most of the show.
By LFMartins86 Go To PostEnola Holmes is getting some good reviews.trailer looked cute.
Ms Ratchet is ok I guess. Reminds me of AHS to some extent. Paulson is good and the story is interesting, but it’s less scary and more just twisted and at times gruesome.
Also we did some fucked up medical shit on mentally ill people last century wow

By reilo Go To PostHow many of these shows will survive for more than two seasons? If it gets the views it probably will get a third. Getting at least two is a pretty good deal for most.

Finally a horror movie where people have a reason to stay in a haunted house.
Fuck, this premise is wild. In af.
By Laboured Go To PostHope it improves on the first season.Doesn't really need to do much to do that.
By pkaz01 Go To PostGreek mythology i'm in
mashallah
I don't understand how these Netflix cartoons end up looking worse than the most quickly produced Japanese anime.
Powerhouse managed to make it look uglier and stiffer than Castlevania. Looks like the entire thing is one 4s wtf

By Laboured Go To PostNow that's some fucking bullshit.Indeed, was a great show.
By Lupercal Go To PostWatched the first episode of Barbarians.I'm 4 episodes in, I think, no big battles yet. It's been decent so far, nothing less, nothing more. Hopefully it ramps up in the second half.
Decent start, waiting to see how big battles will be shot.
Seems like most of the hype has been from people stanning for Thusnelda, which is completely understandable.
Haunting of Blu Manor ... possibly the slowest and least scary, “scary series” I’ve ever watched. Not bad mind you. I enjoyed
It, but it’s mildly creepy at best

By Laboured Go To PostYeah, actually works better thinking of it as primarily a romance tbh.
The show was self conscious enough to admit this in the end as well!!!!!! “You Know you framed your story wrong”
