Oo nice, I'd like to hear your thoughts on Super so yeah that'd be good
Just finished Chapter 7 of A Girl by the Sea
Like you Shanks I seem to sometimes be confused as to who is talking, it isn't always very clear. Other than that though I'm enjoying it so far. I can see why you didn't want to read at the laundromat haha
Kinda difficult to predict where it'll go from here but doesn't seem like she will find happines. The guy is such a cunt lol.
Looking forward to reading more

Finished A Girl by the Sea.
I enjoyed it. Things got a bit extreme at one point, haha. I generally prefer my manga to be a bit more structured, but yeah. Solid read.

By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostZabo, you were only meant to read 7 chapters lolEhhh, sorry, but it already takes a lot of effort to pick up and start reading a manga these days (haven't read one in fucking ages). If I have to divide my reading in chunks, there's a good chance I'd just stop at some point. Anyway, it's just two volumes.

I know what you mean, I could have finished it in the one sitting.
Cool that the thread got you back into reading a manga.
Well, I kinda lied, I'm also reading Jojo Part 6.
I'm sure we'll be discussing Jojo at some point as well. Part 3 & 4 are GOAT tier.

For the record, I hate manga scans. Hate them with a passion. I'm sure there are tons of *great* scans out there, especially of new(-ish) manga releases, but somehow I can never find really good scans of the (older) ones I'm interested in. They're usually alright, but not good enough, and it leads to a subpar reading experience on a 7"+ tablet. They're just not sharp and clear enough. A Girl On The Shore was the same, btw.
This is where it's at.

By P-SY Go To Postyou can read japanese? No, I had fellow Slaenter OddMorsel translate it for me. I pay him in memes.
Nah, it's pretty much my favourite manga, so I had to buy the original version (read it in italian first). A friend of mine brought it from his trip in Japan a couple of years back. You can get used manga for dirt cheap in Japan. Even the ones with a 'B' rating, like these Rough volumes were, are pretty much immaculate. I can't even tell they were ever used.

I have a few one pieces issues in English, Korean, and Japanese. I wish my Korean was better as they release it here sooner than the English. I don't use scans to read it weekly. I would love to own the complete collection in Japanese, but there are over 80 volumes lol. They just look and feel so much better. I am pissed off with myself for not buying the latest volume when I was over there. Has been a bit of a tradition, might buy it online to make up for it.

By Apollo Go To PostI won't be joining in but I will be seeing what is recommended. Where can I get Touch and Rough?A quick google search reveals that Touch is on Mangareader, while Rough can be found on Mangafox.me.
After Rough we should tackle 20th Century Boys. Always wanted to read it, never got past the first volume.

Ok, so this week the aim is to read to chapter 14.

Anybody know of a good way / app to read manga in pdf format? Acrobat is a nightmare, Perfect Viewer + PDF plugin kiiiinda works, but it's not ideal either.

Comic rack
By Apollo Go To PostComic rackI'll try that, thanks.
My problem is "turning pages" doesn't quite work when there's a PDF involved, since one page in the PDF document doesn't always / usually correspond to one manga page. It's really annoying and time consuming having to move / center the picture for every goddamn page.
But if that's the nature of the beast (format) and it can't be helped, then I really don't understand the point of all these PDF releases. Surely the convenience of having everything in one file doesn't supersede the ease of reading you get by having one page correspond to one jpeg / png.
spoilers
I read up to chapter 15.
I had thought the girl was suicidal, but it turns out it was the guy who had those thoughts, really not sure who is talking half the time.
It seems clear that she got a bun in her oven.
I thought she was gonna end up falling for the baseball guy as it is clear he likes her, but now he is in hospital and she seems to be developing feelings for Mister Dildo Up The Arse.
Now that was one scene I was not expecting.
The writing the email chapter was beautiful. I feel like there is still more to that as he said he feels responsibility. Maybe he asked his brother to fuck him. ;p
I can't help but feel like he raped her with the anal scene, yet after that we see the first glimp of actual love between them, when they are just holding hands.
Looking forward to seeing how it concludes.

So I finished it.
Really enjoyed it, although it felt uncomfortable reading it at times. Disn't really expect it to be pretty graphic.
Everyone seemed to have a happy resolution in the end, except the baseball kid who waited too long to ask.
I really thought she was pregnant, but I guess not.
I really lived the artwork, a bit confusing to follow the dialogue at times. I really liked when he wrote his email and she wrote her letter. I felt like I was following them writing it.
I like how having a dream, the shore girl, helped changed his life and gave him purpose.
I hope to read some of Asano's other work soon.

You sure? Maybe I read it wrong but I thought the end was pretty sad. Throughout the series it's demonstrated that they just can't express themselves to each other and aren't on the same page at all. It's almost as if two separate books are playing out parallel to each other and there's inexplicable friction whenever the two intertwine.
The best example of which I think is the titular Girl on the Shore photo. When Koume finds it and deletes it, it's obvious that she does so out of jealousy because she likes him, but Isobe instead gets angry because she deleted something of her brother's, of which he had been deliberately preserving since his suicide.
Throughout the story both characters despite being intimate physically, have no idea what the other is going through emotionally. Even in the climax they both act out of mutual affection in ways that are incomprehensible to the other person. Koume finally realizes her feelings and confesses to an Isobe that can't believe her, and Isobe ends the relationship in an act of self-sacrifice by lying about the Girl in the photo to a Koume that has no idea about his depression over his brother and what he's done because of it.
In the end you have two kids that care about each other that are just completely unable to communicate it to each other. I don't think the Epilogue was meant to be a happy resolution so much as to illustrate that even so, life goes on. It also leaves Isobe's fate ambiguous.

We probably need a different format. Seems like the thread lost everyone in a book that's only 20 chapters.

Finally some opinions!!!!!!!!!!
Isobe seemed to always express his desire to have a relationship with Koume, but then showed no real interest except for fucking. Whenever she tried to talk with him he was like fuck this and would just sleep.
Koume, not really sure if she actually wanted a serious relationship with Isobe. Seemed more like he was there and she didn't want to be alone. I am not sure if she had a real serious interest in manga at the time, but it seemed like she just wanted to like it because it would make her more appealable to Isobe. It was only with the last guy that we see her actually seem comfortable with herself and not just needing to rely on sex to have a boy like her. We see that she likes manga for her ownsake and hasn't had much physical contact with him during the first month of their relationship. For the first time she actually seems genuinely happy, as opposed to the her feelings with Isobe, which was about not being alone.
Isobe did seem happy at the end. Maybe the girl wasn't the real one in the photo, but he finally seems to have some drive to actually do something instead of mopping about. I know what he don't see him in high school, but I assume he managed to get into the same school. It woke him up out of his depression, he didn't have anyone to talk about how he felt about his brother's death with, but at least it gave him a purpose in life for the first time. Instead of just going home and trying to keep his brother alive on the internet.
Rough is 12 volumes.
I am gonna hopefully try 3 volumes a week. If anyone else has a better suggestion, please let me know.

Early on Koume was just using him though. She asked him to have sex because she knew he had feelings for her and would say yes.
She basically initiates the relationship in the same way the boy she got rejected by did to her. She didn't begin to develop actual romantic interest in him until the Girl on the Shore photo.

Fair enough. I'll be honest I didn't read much into the Epilogue myself. My impression was that she was doing the same thing she did to Isobe with the new guy. They weren't having sex, but it seemed like she was in a similar relationship where the boy was clearly demonstrating romantic interest, and she isn't reciprocating fully, if at all. It's understandable because that's the only experience she's had in relationships. Both times she actually tried to open up she got burned.
Isobe did seem happy at the end. Maybe the girl wasn't the real one in the photo, but he finally seems to have some drive to actually do something instead of mopping about. Again maybe I had the wrong reading, but I'm pretty sure he was lying about everything.
and the police questioning him at the end implies that he got caught for assaulting his brother's bullies. I suppose it's possible he could have walked away from that and continued on the course of life of a normal high schooler, but I think we're shown that and nothing else by the author to demonstrate that Isobe couldn't escape his depression or its consequences. I imagine this is also what motivates him to lie and break up with Koume.
