Ok, this is for anyone who fancies reading manga together. We can pick a manga, read it and discuss it.
What do you guys think about it?
Should we select a manga for a month to read? I am guessing no shonen mangas as they are usually rather long.
Zabo recommended Rough, a swimming/love manga that only has 12 volumes and seems pretty easy to finish in around a month.
i will try and update this thread with sources to purchase and read mangas, so please recommend any that you know.
Recommended manga:
Rough by Mitsuru Adachi
Touch by Mitsuru Adachi
Pluto by Naoki Urasawa
Blame by Nihei
A Girl By The Sea
Adolf by Tezuka Osamu
Buddha by Tezuka Osamu
MxO
Hook
Pretty Face
Houseki no Kumi
Update: August's Manga is A girl on the shore by Asano. Try and read around 7 chapters a week and discuss what you think.

I recommend Pluto.Fantastic manga by a very renown mangaka in Naoki Urasawa. Like his other works(Monster, 21st Century Boys),it gets needlessly convoluted by the end but it's short enough and based in an existed universe(Astro Boy) that it doesn't bring it down too much.
Great characters, charming artwork with a compelling plot with only 65 chapters so it's a light read.
I don't believe that it's available online via any sort of manga subscription so apart from buying the volumes the only other way to read them are though online scanlations.
P-SY, thanks for the recommendation. yeah, best if it is finished and not dozens of volumes.
FF, ok. How about Rough first and then the Pluto one, I loved watching Monster, so i hopefully another manga from the same guy will be cool.
What rate do you think you could read? It would be nice to read and be able to comment together after a couple of chapters.
Sadly, Amazon UK doesn't have either manga in kindle form, so I will have to use less legal sources :(((

Fair enough. Rough is good, and I guess it's short enough.
My recommendation: Blame!
Great manga, very little dialogue. Nihei's best work imo. It's only 10 volumes and you could polish it off in a week.
He's probably better known for Sidonia.

I like the sound of Blame! Adam
We should do that one too
-
Shanks I spend about 45 mins or so in the toilet most days and a lot of the time on my porch
So I can read during that time
Haven't read any manga in a while though, probably been over a year

I'd also recommend A Girl By The Sea. It's been a few years since I've read it but I remember it being pretty interesting. Really chill manga, only 2 volumes as well.
Also pretty much anything by tezuka osamu is fucking CLASSIC. Adolf and Buddha are both great. If this thread doesn't die soon it'd be cool if we could read those together.

Mx0 is one of my favorites, though it has one of the worst endings because it wasn't a commercial success and they told him to wrap it up with like two issues notice. 99 issues.
Hook: Kid in a magic school who can't use magic but somehow must pass off as a magical savant to all the other students (and nearly all the teachers) due to fuckery during admission.

every manga seems to be unavailable in kindle edition on amazon.co.uk.
You guys got any recommendation for legal sources to read them online???

Ok, FF, I found a version of Rough. I am gonna read the first volume and then comment.
Anyone else fancy reading along?

I would definitely like to do a group read of something sometime. It'll be our nerdy book club! Until then, I'm just kind of throwing out some random suggestions of things I like that I don't believe are mainstream.
Houseki no Kumi is one of those. It feels like it explores what it means to be human through characters that exist without knowledge or experience of humans. Here is a blurb from Baka-Updates:

In the distant future, a new immortal and genderless life form called Gems populate the Earth. The 28 Gems must fight against the Moon Dwellers, who attack them regularly to abduct them and to turn them into decorations. Each Gem is assigned a role, such as a fighter or a medic.Reading it makes me think. Several scenes just stick with me months after reading them. Translations may not be the best, though.
Being only 300 years old, Phosphophyllite is the youngest of the Gems and has no assignment yet. He wants to help to fight the Moon Dwellers, but is too weak and brittle for battle. One day the master of Gems, Adamantine, assigns him the task of creating a natural history encyclopedia.
Ooh, I've read rough. Almost all of Mitsuru Adachi's works I think.
I love Osamu Tezuka's works too. Sad that the Phoenix series is very hard to get at an affordable price though.
Gonna recommend a simple light manga (well, manhwa) for my first; Gosu.

Kibner, I will put you done as reading that PF.
It would be nice if we could all read one together, that is what we were hoping for in Footy GAF, but I am guessing it is gonna be hard with so many people having read so many different mangas.
Would be cool if people reread some and we can discuss together.

It is 12 volumes, wikipedia doesn't say how many chapters.
Cool, that is three of us for Rough. I am currently reading the first volume.

I think a volume a week of *something* is easily doable for all here. Can we do polls? Maybe we should put up a poll over the weekend to pick a manga and we can start reading it together at the beginning of next week.
It would be nice if we could finish a manga a month.
Ok, let's vote. Maybe end the pole in say 48 hours.
I think me and FF vote for Rough.

Adam Blade #boycottingallsportsI've always preferred Rough for some reason. As obsessed as Adachi is with baseball, there's just something special and intimate about the way the relationship between (competing in) sports and love flows in Rough. It's shorter and more straightforward than Touch because of it, but it doesn't lack any of the nuance and sensitivity which defines Adachi's opus.

Rough isn't even Adachi's best work. Why not Touch?
Also, from what I can remember, Adachi's drawing is significantly more accomplished in Rough. It's the best manga to recommend to someone who's looking to get familiar with the author, imo. I'm curious to see what Shanks' and FF's reaction to his particular drawing style will be. I *adore* it, but speaking from experience … I know it can be something of an acquired taste.

The only art style that stopped me from reading a manga or watching an anime is Code Geass. Something about it just disturbs me.
Zab that looks really familiar to the last manga I read
I forgot what it was called
But I enjoyed it then randomly stopped
It was about a student who liked a landlord whose husband was dead or something along those lines
The house was full of funny and cunt characters
Sorry for the derail hahah but that art style (which I do like) looks quite similar

That can only be Maison Ikkoku by Rumiko Takahashi (widely known for Ranma 1/2). Soichiro the GOAT. Bau!
MI is lovely, Rumiko is great at coming up with cunt characters. I don't really see the similiarity, other than the fact that they're both 80s as fuck. :P
But again, it's been a while ...

Haha yeah that's the one, thanks zab
The characters were likeable cunts though, which is what I prefer
Maybe the art style isn't as similar as I thought after a quick google search lol

If A girl by the Sea is the Inio Asano work I vote that.
Also hi guys I like manga a lot and would love to participate.

I voted for Rough, not sure if FF has seen it yet.
I searched for girl by the sea and got girl by the shore instead.

I am cool with reading it as there is a kindle edition.

Yeah I don't know about the format, but that is the correct book.
I'm using this as an excuse to just buy it physical myself lol.

How much should we read this week?
Lol, i guess that is one for my own private reading.
I just downloaded it and there are 20 chapters. How about 7 chapters a week? Then we can try and start a new one around the start of September.

Ok, started chapter one and this doesn't seem the type of thing I should be reading in a laundromat lol.
Really enjoying this so far. I was half tempted to keep reading past chapter 7. Maybe we should make a rule about only reading one manga from an artist. Then we are free to look more into the artists ourselves. I think I might try out Solanin to keep me ticking until next week.
Not gonna use spoilers because then it might just become a black bar thread.
I feel like the dude is a typical gafer, has an infatuation with a girl and wonders why she doesn't like him when he acts a cunt to her every chance he gets. Maybe if he talked to her more rather than just try and bang her or fall asleep whenever she wants to talk to him, then she would be more interested in him.
Don't have good vibes from this girl. Already she is going down the 'I am not sure how much longer I have to live' root. Thrown in with the fact that she is very sexually active and desires the older boy.
I like the art style, although I am sometimes confused with who is talking.
