I have never seen that EVER CALLED by an umpire... I watch this whole set and never saw anything like that before, WTF?
By Laboured Go To PostShe's right though! I mean holy fuck I've seen Serena go nuclear and not get a penalty before, much less a warning. I have no idea what the ump though he heard. No way Serena can come back from this, she's hot.
By domino Go To Postdamn serena got smashedYeah Serena had been struggling though the game and couldn't really keep it together and Osaka has been playing great. But holy crap @ the ump and Serena.
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostSerena has always been embarrassing when she's taking L's. Nothing new.... If you watched the match you would get the fuckery. Never seen anything like that. How many racquet smashed have players done and not get a warning? That is such a drive by take.
By Laboured Go To Post
I watch a lot of tennis and every single man would've gotten that penalty.
Even the announcers said their was nothing that warranted a 2nd or 3rd warning. 4-3 and Serena was still kinda in it... 5-3? Nah that was it because Serena would have to break twice, and that was very unlikely the way Osaka was playing.
By Doncicic Go To PostI watch a lot of tennis and every single man would've gotten that penalty."Would have" ... Men's tennis has been a lot more aggressive and I haven't seen anything like this yet.
I've seen plenty. She clearly got coached and then smashed the raquet those are two warnings you get everytime. No discussion.
The issue Serena hated was the implication that Serena was cheating (coaching was pumping her up when Serena wasn't looking, ump called a violation). Serena herself walked to the ump and said she doesn't cheat and had a calm convo with him, and I thought that was it earlier...
The issue that people are arguing (and me) is the smashed racket which landed at her feet (2nd violation) and the conversation (3rd penalty, Game). Every announcer said there was nothing that really garnered the 2nd or 3rd. Even the smashed racket wasn't egregious.

Smashing a racket pretty much always gives you a warning. Like i don't remember a time where it didn't.

EDIT: I've seen matches where that happens and maybe they announced it quietly so I missed it, but yikes.

Yes it is. I can tell you a few warnings from Wawa and Zverev this year.
Man I got to say this is nice. Osaka and Serena pure class all the way, a bit surprising from Serena considering how angry he was. Got to quiet to crowd down.
EDIT: Whoa members of her team wanted Serena to quit in protest? Oh come on...

The Open is doing a great job of breaking down the whole thing on TV, really nice job. Hopefully it's online on video later.
Oh Lord both forums melting down.

By Doncicic Go To PostIt's allowed on WTA events afaik. Slams are ITF events. It's not allowed on the ATP tour.Rule needs to be addressed, it's basically the same as the NFL "complete the process of a catch" rule, too much judgement into it. Chris Everett pretty much said the same thing. Either ban it outright for everything or allow it legally since yes, EVERYONE DOES IT; It's too subjective.
By Doncicic Go To PostThe no coaching rule is pretty straight forward and again, her coach admitted to do it.I've heard too much of that in sports. It's the same as holding in the NFL; every lineman holds on every play. However, if the lineman is trying to pull away and you restrict his movement, it's Holding. Same thing, the rules are too nebulous in that aspect. Remove the ambiguity.
EDIT: Serena didn't even see that LOL.
Doesn't really matter if she saw it or not. Her coach tried to coach her which is illegal which gives you a warning.
By Doncicic Go To PostDoesn't really matter if she saw it or not. Her coach tried to coach her which is illegal which gives you a warning. But I'm not talking about the match now. This is something that happens all the time and it's inconsistently. You just had 5 former players on the set all agreeing to that and saying the needs to change. The point is now "How do we fix this so this doesn't happen in another big spot?"
By Hitch Go To PostGet mad about the rules being applied brehs💀 💀
By The Frankman Go To PostEDIT: Serena didn't even see that LOL.If Serena didn't seen any hand signals, why did she say to the umpire that it was just a thumbs up?
I mean if you always win and get things your way you probably wouldn't take a L well. Not seen one GOAT behave well when things aren't going their way.
By LFMartins86 Go To PostFirst time a Portuguese had a big impact in a major tennis tournament.lol
I love Naomi but she gets a lot of love for just being mixed with Japanese... In fact if she wasn't good at tennis she wouldn't even be considered Japanese...
Serena Williams' claims of sexism in the US Open final have been backed by the governing body of women's tennis.
WTA chief executive Steve Simon said the umpire showed Williams a different level of tolerance over Saturday's outbursts than if she had been a man.

I think he's admitting Serena's ref handled things differently than the refs that were in matches he played in. He does not go into why he thinks the refs handled the situation differently.
A thread of multiple players threatening the same ref Serena had but not getting warnings or penalties from him:

By FortuneFaded Go To PostSo is James Blake admitting it has nothing to do with race then?Wait who said it had to do with race? If Serena said that she's being paranoid again, she doesn't have to best history with refs (i.e. Clisters and Capriati of note).

Williams is historically a bad loser so this should come as no surprise to anyone. Just another case of her looking for excuses.
What's really disappointing is the media, who are supposed to be objective, falling over themselves to make this a much larger issue and taking Serena's side. She's an entitled shit.
