I'm watching the anime for the first time, it's as good as the manga. There's some stupid shit sometimes, but it's got a lot of cool twists and interesting character interactions. Probably my favorite manga/anime I've seen.

Too bad the second half doesn't live up to the rest.
For some suggestions, it all depends on the genres you like.
The first suggestion I'll always bring up, if the person isn't looking for the usual animes, is Monster.
Basically a thriller that's easily on par, if not even better on some occasions, with most of the real life TV series.
Great characters, a plot that leaves no holes and where all knots work together from the beginning until the end.
A setting that is historical accurate and gives a pretty good overview over the countries that are part of the series.
Germany is the centre, and as someone who lives here, it's just mesmerizing how good the author researched the whole area around the time. Not just the architecture, but the overall situation including the behaviour and issues that occured back then.
Read up a bit about the plot and give it a try, easily my favorite series.
Otherwise you'll have to give a few more indicators on what you're looking for.
If you're enjoying Death Note, definitely consider checking out Code Geass. It's brilliant for many of the same reasons and feels like it has the same format of feeling like a character driven psychological chess game despite being set with in a completely different focus.
Enjoy it while it lasts. Both the manga and anime take a sharp nosedive into complete fucking trash.
Anime OT here
If you just like series... Hunter x Hunter is enjoyable. Good pace, many feels, good action, great characters, engaging yet simple story.
I mean, the thing with Anime is that there are so many genre's its really hard to just say you'll like everything in it.
Most people have loved Attack on Titan (Singeki no Kyojin). I've loved it, found it wildly entertaining. Pacing for the story was good for an action anime too. And the manga writers are in full control of the story, not the animators, which means it wont be ruined any time soon with stupidity.
