It's taking a way a lot of screen space for no apparent reason, and there doesn't seem to necessarily be any rhyme or reason to the threads that are listed in this area.
By brainchild Go To PostIt's still not pure Android though. The beauty of stock Android is that you can have it as basic or as feature complete as you want, but at least you have a choice.
Pure meaning what exactly, that it isn't vanilla from Google? Having enhancements isn't a bad thing, surely you realize a lot of the Android code base comes from companies other than Google. Sony for example is one of the biggest contributors to the AOSP.
The side bar on the s8 series is hands down one of the best additions IMO. That and Samsung pay are really great software.
I love the new front page. It works great. I'm noticing a bit of slowness now, but I suppose that's to be expected with all the new visitors. In lieu of ads, you could always consider adding a patreon if server costs become prohibitive.
Edit: Also, the filters on the front page only seem to apply to the right section of threads rather than the left highlights. Is that intentional?

Does it deserve so much screen real estate though? And even in execution, these promoted threads are neither the most "busy" threads going right now (that would be the GAF talk thread, reset era thread, etc), nor are they the most "important" threads ( new mods, welcome new members, etc). So it's kind of like, eh. Doesn't seem to be fulfilling its function at present. And I think as the site gets busier, defining what deserves a promotion will get more difficult.

Probably a shit suggestion, but I'd suggest a slideshow scroll with promoted threads because I rarely scroll down far enough to see what other threads are there besides the top two. This wouldn't exactly drive more users to participate in those threads but I don't think the current method does either but it would take up less space. and maybe if you hover the mouse over it there's a like a quip or something endorsing the thread.
also. site is loading slow for me too.
Tbh I thought that featured thread was an ad at first. Not sure if it's necessary at all but maybe only on the front page ?

Yes, vanilla Android. I never said enhancements were bad. I just prefer to choose which ones I want in a modular way. It's no different than wanting to buy a PC that doesn't have a bunch of shit already pre-installed on it. Sure, it might be more convenient for some people, but it's more of a hassle for me. And this is before we get into the ungodly amount of processes running in the background of anything other than a stock Android phone. I don't want my phone to waste resources on anything it doesn't have to, and users should always be provided with the option to have control over that.

that's interesting, I don't see the featured text, or has that been removed
By pepe_silvia Go To PostIs there a way to subscribe to threads? Sorry if it's been discussed before.Coming soon!
By s y Go To PostThat's the promoted thread section. Mods promote threads to get more attention. This isn’t me dog piling on you but rotating slideshows and stuff are bad UX. Every study I ever read on them showcased an over 90% dropoff on the second item in the list. People simply never stick around the area to see what’s second on the list or third.

It also tends to give better battery life, is less prone to slow down over time and is generally less buggy.

I'm sorry to say then, without custom ROMs you aren't going to add this same level of functionality. Not to mention that AOSP itself has "ungodly amount of processes" running in the background. The only ways to add new functionality like this in a "modular" fashion is either a custom rom, which is what Samsung HTC etc all put out, or an Xposed module which hasn't worked since 6.0.
So I really don't understand the arguments you're making here.
By reilo Go To PostI regret bringing it up but can you guys take this Android discussion to an appropriate thread 😂
I was thinking the same thing, sorry reilo. Ignorance of tech really gets under my skin and blanket "AOSP is better than other ROMs!!!" Is about as ignorant as one can get about Android.
Anyways, will continue this in another chat if someone wants to make an Android OT or in a PM if anyone cares that much.
Here is a shit suggestion:
A forum basic mode. I intend to stay here at slaent, since GAF membership has plummeted, the OT is still dead, and there is no discussion going on... And a lot of people have migrated over here, but mobile readability on this site is significantly worse than the old school stripped down aesthetic of GAF. It would be awesome, (if maybe impossible?) to be able to click a box for the forums to be super basic in formatting and presentation.
There are a ton of awesome features that this site has over GAF, but quick readability was always GAF's strength, whether on ezboards, vbulletin, on the old mobile webapp, or on the m.neogaf link.
Maybe it's a dumb suggestion and I will get used to the more busy aesthetic of slaent, who knows.
Either way, it is great to see many of the old school Gaffers here.

Just click on the three - on the top bar and you can select the specific forum and see it exactly like that.

Who said anything about getting the exact same functionality? I'm simply talking about enhancing my phone from a basic starting point. I never asked or wanted the same functionality that is offered with Samsung's latest launcher. And that's ok! If you find it useful, great! But I don't need it, and I only want the bare minimum of features on my phone. If I want to add a feature, I'll add one. No, it won't be a Samsung UX overhaul, but if a single feature I want requires that, then it's not worth having, imo. I don't need a custom ROM because there isn't a single smartphone software feature compelling enough to warrant its installation (again, in my opinion). If it can't be installed on a stock Pixel, then I don't want it. Simple as that.
As for running processes, I fully acknowledge that stock Android has plenty of processes running in the background. But the issue is only compounded when you add a skin ON TOP of that, resulting in even more processes running overall. I can't reduce the processes to nill, but I can do my part in minimizing those processes as much as possible.

My apologies. Done and dusted.
Posted a few pages back but having links to the sections/categories next to the page navigation at the bottom of a page would be great.

I’m super impressed you guys (and gals) built this from scratch. Kind of mind blowing. It really feels like a modern take on the classic message board. I’m on an iPad now, but interest to run the “built with” extension when I get back to my laptop. Mind sharing what front end technologies you’re using to quench my curiosity?
Also, is there a cosoloidated list of features in the works? I don’t want to keep asking about things that have already been discussed to death. I can think of a few things I’d like to see when viewing a user’s profile page - will hold off until I make sure they’re not already cooking :D

grown to like the look of this place very quickly, keep up the good work!
I'm guessing the number of posts a thread has is to do with the general philosophy of not having status symbols or something that I saw mentioned in another post here? would be nice to know if a thread is new or not somehow before I head in though.

I’ll make a trackable list of features being worked on tonight. Check a couple pages back I gave an update on what’s happening.
And our stack is Python with Django, Postgres, React and SASS for the client with Node 8 and Babel for handling the JavaScript so I can code in ES201x. We use Cloudfront to host our static assets and images which are gzipped and cached globally for performance.

There’ll be updates in the future to help with the UX of new threads.I could be (and very likely am) very wrong here, because I don't know how the underlying structure works, but does each thread have certain attributes related to it in the database (Title, etc)? If so, is it possible to track a "postcount" variable alongside these which would get incremented when a new post is made in that specific thread, and then the forum view if it had "___ posts" for each thread, would just retrieve and display this number without having to do a count each time the forum page is loaded? I know you said earlier that doing a count for each thread every load would be very slow, which makes sense. Would something like this avoid having to do frequent counts?
Potentially that's one of the options, yea. It would need to be a separate table with a join on the thread_id though.
Figured out the slow downs being caused is by the new who quoted me query. I'll need to disable it until tonight when I can investigate what the issue is. Sorry about that!
Minor suggestion:
The PM indicator isn't particularly eye catching. There have been a few times when I've completely missed the fact that I have a PM until quite a long time after receiving it. Would be nice if it was more noticeable when you got a message.

Noted!
Also, seemingly, the issue with the updated query from last night is if a user doesn't have any posts, which is sensible. Gotta figure out a way around that.

So my favorite color is red and by default I love this site so yaaaasss to that.
I'd like to suggest (if this hasn't been beaten like a dead horse by now,) on the desktop version of the site, can it look a bit more like the mobile version where everything is horizontal? The weird blocky and big vertical articles attached to the horizontal articles on the right just seems to takes up way too much space and it's a bit much on the eyes.
Also is there a subscriber button yet? I've seen people talking about it but I can't seem to find it, if it's there.
Keep up the good work boo!

Even though it's back now, definitely noticed the difference when you hit quote and it took a second or two to populate the response field. What'd you change from your earlier implementation to this current one?

What'd you change from your earlier implementation to this current one?Sharp rightly pointed out that I had the wrong index. Due to a specific Postgres configuration he made, the query planner wasn't going against this new index, so we had to add another index to make it work. That fixed it and now the execution time is sub 1ms for users with 0 posts and up to 7ms at most for users with some posts.
