I've been getting some "Who quoted me"s that are posts that definitely did not quote me. Just wanted to report that.
edit: upon further investigation it looks like those occurrences are when people quote the person who quoted me.
I kinda like that. makes it easy to see a conversation as a thread itself almost, within a thread,

By m_shortpants Go To PostI've been getting some "Who quoted me"s that are posts that definitely did not quote me. Just wanted to report that. They quoted a post that quoted you. It's truly a threading system underneath but we just expose it as linear -- which in the future, we might allow people to use but just haven't figured out a UI around that. I'll have it fixed tonight.

You better than this
I have a suggestion, I think the icons on the left side of the threads would be better if they were something related to the thread as oppossed to them being the avatar of the thread creator, I think that for usability matters it would be better if say, a pokemon thread had a pokeball or a pikachu icon instead.

Is there a way to subscribe to a thread?
Also a way to refresh the page to show extra posts via button like gaf, instead of refreshing thr whole page?
Probably is but still new here

The one on the left is the creator, and in desktop there is one in the right which is what you say. In mobile that's confusing because at the left you have the creator's avatar, but the name below is the one who last posted

I was gonna give you the stink eye because you use the light theme, but you definitely redeemed yourself here. Samsung's bloat is objectively certifiable trash (and I'm saying this as someone who's typing from a Galaxy S7 as we speak, but that's a story for another day). If someone wants the best Android experience, I'd recommend a Pixel phone. You get the responsiveness, simplicity, and cohesion of an iPhone, with the flexibility, robustness, and usefulness of an Android. It's the best of both worlds.
And before anyone jumps down my throat about Google's poor hardware design decisions, just know that none of that superficial bullshit is gonna make your phone more useful as a smartphone.

By PaulLFC Go To PostReilo, are post counts for threads in the forum view on the future roadmap? Those would be useful.Hrmm, my gut instinct? No. For all of its many great things about relational databases and specifically Postgres, calling COUNT for 25-50 separate threads to determine the post count is extremely slow. I can envision a future where we cache that metadata and grab it in some way with a slight statistical lag, but until we determine an appropriately performant way to do, it'll be left out for bigger fish to fry.

I'd like to know this as well. Oh, post history for each user. If it's not, that's fine. Just curious.
Post history for a user is pretty easy to do. The trouble is finding a UX that's actually usable to go through.

Accessible from the user's profile page, possibly?
EDIT:
Or were you referring to the UX design for the page that comes up once you click on the post history from the profile page?
By brainchild Go To PostAccessible from the user's profile page, possibly?Yea, but that's not the challenge. Like, what do you get by interacting with those posts from a user? Do we cap it at most recent n posts? Can you search the list? Etc.
By reilo Go To PostYea, but that's not the challenge. Like, what do you get by interacting with those posts from a user? Do we cap it at most recent n posts? Can you search the list? Etc.
I see. Well, personally, I'd just like a place where I can keep track of everything that I've posted in so that I can stay abreast of those conversations even if I'm not directly involved in them. Subscriptions help with that, but I only use those for long term topics that I plan to be a part of regularly. But it's already getting difficult for me to get back to some of the discussions I've been a part of in the short term because there are so many. I tend to post in all kinds of threads, so it's just easier to keep up with them if I can go back to my post history.
Of course, if it's too much to ask, then I'll just have to deal with it, but I was just wondering if it was on the cards, and if not, maybe it can be taken into consideration. Thanks for the insight though.
It's in the cards. I'm confident it's not a technical hurdle, just more of a conceptual challenge of "what will this be used for?"
I can see a "Search my posts" feature of this caliber that allows you individually to track your posts.

Sounds great. Thanks again.
Who quoted me should be fixed with a more sensible query. You'll now see the 10 most recently quoted posts.
I'll probably move the Who Quoted Me to a separate page or tab or something once I have time, but this will do!
Did you have a heads up at all about what was coming? (influx of new member) Just so suprised you've managed to deal with this kind of scaling up with zero issues.
And I'm going to assume you didnt, what were your thoughts/issues when you realised what was happening?
Finally I'd be interested in knowing what kind of growth numbers we had since the weekend? (if your happy to share that info)

By Kidjr Go To PostJust so suprised you've managed to deal with this kind of scaling up with zero issues.I'll let Sharp respond to this in depth if he as time, but in short: theoretically? Yes. Everything about the backend when it was written was with performance in mind. How our database is structured is purposeful to make it not only extensible but to also tackle certain queries that would make other forums crumble, e.g. Who Quoted Me? for example.
By Kidjr Go To PostAnd I'm going to assume you didnt, what were your thoughts/issues when you realised what was happening?Lots of adrenaline mostly, just making sure that what was designed 3 (!) years ago would hold true today, and it did!

Just so suprised you've managed to deal with this kind of scaling up with zero issues. This forum was kind of an experiment for Reilo and me. I, specifically, felt like a forum should be software that's really optimizable, and wanted to design a forum that didn't have any pathological or slow queries in the fast path (this was partly motivated by the times GAF kept going down every E3). I also planned ahead to make sure that certain functionality that people like but is hard to support efficiently (like who quoted me) was built in in some way from the getgo so that we didn't need to add expensive queries after the fact. I then heavily microoptimized all the common queries on this site, and did a lot of stress testing and benchmarking to make sure it would work under load. Reilo and I also made sure that our macro architecture was very efficient: as much is cacheable as possible, we try not to support features with minimal utility that could be slow, and we offload basically every static asset to a CDN to save bandwidth. We also have very few moving parts, and keep the database and web server on the same machine to limit latency. In the future, we may also switch to a new custom web server that can serve orders of magnitude more requests / second.
At the time, I didn't really expect the site to see that much traffic, but it's a nice object lesson that premature optimization isn't always a bad thing!
And I'm going to assume you didnt, what were your thoughts/issues when you realised what was happening?
I've been pretty excited (I didn't realize what was going on until yesterday). My goal here was always "hey if for some reason we suddenly get a huge influx of traffic, wouldn't it be nice if we didn't go down?"
Finally I'd be interested in knowing what kind of growth numbers we had since the weekend? (if your happy to share that info)
I think we jumped from about 10k HTTP requests / day to about 5 million. Our unique session count increased from the hundreds to about 20,000. So, about a 200-500x increase in traffic overall, I guess... let's say two orders of magnitude.

@reilo: GAF-migrant here, love what you’ve done with SL&ENT.
I’m not sure how many if these were discussed in the past, bit here’s some feedback from my part:
- On iOS (Safari, iPhone) the scroll bar in the white/default theme is impossible to see as it seems to be themed (white on white). You can only really see it when you’re at the top or bottom of the page (white on red). You don’t get a feel for the length of the page because of this. No issue with the Dark theme however (white on black).
- This may have been discussed already, but is there no way to search the thread title instead of the posts? Even if I find a post that may be in the thread I’m looking for, I can’t seem to be able to go to the thread from the post itself.

Getting it to this point was a lot of work and even moreso on the backend. The re-done search results page will take some work, too.
