Now that we have officially been up and running on the new software I wanted to take some time to keep everyone in the loop on where we currently are as far as the website is concerned. I would also like to open this thread as a platform for any questions and we will try to answer them to the best of our abilities. Here are a few things to note:
We write our own software
What you see as far as User Experience, the design and featureset is just a foundation. A rocksolid foundation. As we grow we will provide improvements and changes to the site in many different ways.

Good. At work I can only use IE and I can't reply to threads because the overlay expands beyond the screen.

Any chance we can get a fix on the search bar on Safari? Really my only nag with the current site.
Keep up the awesome work as usual.

Noted.
By diprosalicis the navigation bar now on the left? that's awkward and it doesn't work on safari.Yes, it's on the left now. It makes the most sense from a UI perspective and the UX didn't change at all.
What do you mean it doesn't work on Safari?
sorry i wrote that wrong, the navigation on the left is fine. no complaints in terms of design. to the problem:
i haven't tested it in other browser but if i click on new reply i can't read or add quotes from the thread. it pushes it too to the right and i can't scroll to read the whole text or access the quote buttons.
i will add a picture sorry for the size:

also the edit mode doesn't seem to work anymore. nothing shows up.

Ah, I see what you mean. You can close the editor by hitting 'x' in the top right (which will move, sorry!) and then you can quote another post and you won't lose your current posting state. I did this so it is consistent with how mobile works (where you have to close out again to see the thread).
The issue I found from a user experience perspective was that since I was just shrinking the content, it would end up shifting the position of where you were reading from so you had to scroll anyway and it made it irrelevant.
I'll keep tweaking it and find a happy medium.

Will look into that. Safari kinda sucks, tbh. Latest Mavericks one is pretty solid but they need to move to a more rapid development schedule.
Thank you very much for the update and all of the hard work involved to make this site the only site you need to visit when you open your browser.
I expect Coli-like smileys to be the norm soon. Nothing wrong with that.

I was thinking more of the way The Coli does it: crowd-sourced smileys for the entire site.
But hey, profile specific custom smileys work, too...

This is something we'll evaluate. I'll try to provide an update soon.
Maybe my monitor isn't calibrated right, but I feel like a whole bunch of the "lining" elements on the site are nearly impossible to see because they're either too light or don't have a visible distinction at all. The boxes surrounding quotes, the actual information submission boxes on things like logging in, etc.

Noted. That's been tweaked several times and will be tweaked going on further.
For reference, I use the site quite regularly on my MBP with the brightness at halfway, and my iPhone brightness is set to around 30%.
I'm impressed. Good job. Who's the 'evil lore' here?
Only suggestion I can think of is the thread showing who was the last post, date and time. I keep checking threads because i can't tell what's a new post or what I clicked on.
Not that big of a deal because it loads crazy fast on my phone. Either way, good job on the site. I made a bookmark. So that's a jump.

Noone, thankfully.

On my to-do list.
I am going to work on a slightly improved animation and how the New Reply editor shows up for an improved UX. Look for that tonight.
By reiloI think part of it is dependent on what browser you are user also.By WahrerMaybe my monitor isn't calibrated right, but I feel like a whole bunch of the "lining" elements on the site are nearly impossible to see because they're either too light or don't have a visible distinction at all. On Chrome, the text is perfectly legible, but Safari it's kinda hard to read.
Comparison: (Left Safari, Right Chrome)
By reiloJFC Safari. Those colore are terrible. iOS Safari doesn't have those issues.Haha, don't shoot the messenger :P
Look how off this is:
And yeah you are right, iOS Safari is fine for some reason. For reference that was OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on Safari 8.0.2
Really the only main reason I like Safari over Chrome is the bookmarks bar is minimalistic text instead of a million garish favicons.

I'm throwing nades at Apple. This is inexcusable.

Yeah, Chrome's Bookmarks suck. There's gotta be a plugin for that...
EDIT:
Maybe it's a Chrome issue? http://webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/15283/google-chrome-for-mac-css-colors-and-display-profiles
Balls.
I prefer the menu bar on the right aesthetically and functionally for the desktop site but maybe I'll get used to it on the left.
Did you change it so its more in line with how most apps place their sidebar?
Mobile site is working fantastic after the update.

I changed it because it made more sense visually and I had trouble with how the SL&ENT placeholder logo interacted with the rest of the UI. Part of it is a feel for how I think the UI should look. The UX is the same, so I wasn't concerned.
I don't know what to think of anymore.
By reiloJFC Safari. Those colore are terrible. iOS Safari doesn't have those issues.

what, where's the difference?
*is colorblind*
i will always browse with Safari on my MBP, it just feels much much nicer. the zooming is smoother, the gesture work much better. i can't two finger scroll with my fingers without chrome wanting to turn pages.

I prefer Safari on iOS but Chrome on OSX.
By WahrerWhat are the recommended dimensions on avatars? I can't figure it out.
Square ratio. You can upload a hi-res image and it will be cropped and re-centered and saved down to a manageable file size, which gives the benefit of having a high upload limit. It will also generate several widescreen aspect ratio images that are blurred quite a bit that I use as a UI background element.
So in theory, if you want your subject in the image to be the focal point in your avatar, make sure it's in the center of the image. Make sense?

I figured that out, I was just wondering if there was an optimal pixel resolution (250x250, 120x120, etc.) that the images ultimately got scaled down to. I know they show up a little bigger on the frontpage with recent thread posts, which is what had me wondering.

no problems with the gestures? they work so much better on Safari, also Chrome just explodes when someone posts a large gif. I'm all about that Chrome on PC tho.

i'd love to have submit on the bottom btw. but that might just be because it was always this way. i'll adjust.

Will tweak!

Magic mouse gives me all the gestures I need, but the GIF issue is beyond frustrating. I prefer Chrome's DevTools and it's the most popular browser so it makes sense to develop with it first.

I moved it to the top because iOS Safari has a multi-tiered menu, so it interferes everytime you try to hit submit on the bottom it brings up the bottom Safari navigation bar if the bar is hidden after you scroll down.
How many users are we now? Feels like the place is becoming a bit livelier these days outside of the NBA threads.
By vireHow many users are we now? Feels like the place is becoming a bit livelier these days outside of the NBA threads.
450ish last time I checked, but I think slightly less than 400 are legitimate. Active users per day we average around 150-200 according to Google Analytics. Not crazy by any means, but a healthy starting point.
By reiloThat's pretty awesome, I wonder if most are from GAF or if some just found the site on their own.By vireHow many users are we now? Feels like the place is becoming a bit livelier these days outside of the NBA threads.

I've noticed if I click on the last post button and there is a new page started by the time I need to refresh the page I'm on, it will skip to the last page causing me to miss a few posts.
By TreyThe mobile version is rather slick. Is there any way to change the layout color?
No, but we will introduce a dark theme in the future sometime.
By psychintellectProxy site or .net address pls. Site is blocked at work. Temp forum still accessible though.Try www.fallingfox.info. If that doesn't work I have a whole list of proxy sites I can forward you.
edit: Would it be possible to implement a way to hide the toolbar on the mobile site? It seems to take up a lot of space when viewing the site in landscape. Otherwise I haven't noticed any issues and love the layout.

The site's toolbar? It would literally make the site unsable and you wouldn't be able to post and navigate effectively.
By reiloOkay, pushed some more updates live.
i like the reply thing more now but i still thought it was cooler when i didn't have to close it and browse the thread at the same time. finding the posts i want to quote was a bit more fluid but it's clearer now than yesterday. good work.
editing works fine now on Safari.
small thing:
i would make the recent threads display on the front page a bit more compact or what's the thought behind it. i rarely scroll all the way down because it's too long. i would prefer a smaller overview over the last 5 threads-ish.
very small thing:
- the spoiler icon could be a bit more clearer, doesn't say "spoiler button" to me.
- the new reply button is not aligned with the "edit profile" and "logout" button. the icon looks like a swiss flag now ;)
