This will all be glorious about 5 years from now when this team never chips and their ceiling is 1st or 2nd round exit. But, if we're really giving credit to "avoid mid range like death, and shoot 3's and paint shots" - that credit should go to SVG more than any other person.
This is similar to what's happening in the NFL - teams focusing more on passing based offenses and less on rushing and defense.
Last 7 Superbowl winners: Seattle. Ravens. Giants twice (with 21, and 17 points). Pittsburgh, Green Bay. NO.
Losing side scores? 8, 31, 17, 25, 17, 23, 14. That Includes Manning twice (8, 17) and Brady twice (17, 14).
Harden's FTA per 100 possessions the last 3 full years: 13.3/11.9/12.3
Harden's FTA per 100 possessions playoffs in same time: 10.6/13.7/9.8
If they win a chip in the next couple years. By all means rub it in my face. But I think they have less than a 10% chance of doing it.

Missing out on Bosh also cost them Parsons. If they had signed Bosh they would've matched the Dallas offer.
They also never would have signed Josh Smith.

Harden
Parsons
Bosh
Howard
That would've been pretty legit. Yeah McHail would still be there but Spolestra proved you don't need a good coach to chip.

I like how in that article they lambast the Lakers offense even though the lakers have a more efficient offense than Houston despite a far tougher schedule of opponents to date.
Not a single mention of turnovers in the article. Houston has the 3rd worst turnover rate. They're 17th in TS%. In fact, this is quite amazing because they lead the league in offensive rebounding! You'd normally think a team with high number of OReb would have a higher TS% since Oreb lead to higher efficiency shots (putbacks and open 3s) which they talk about with regards to Harden as a "functional miss." So basically, the Rockets are a very good offensive team when Harden shoots and a very poor one when someone else is shooting the first shot. And they don't keep hold of the ball much.
Like, I understand the article praising Harden's offense but the Houston offense has been below average this season and is fucking boring as hell to watch. I could understand if it was at the top like last season, but it's not.
The truth is, a great offense can be built in numerous ways. Toronto does a lot of iso-ball and it works. Portland shot a ton of long 2s last year and are doing fine this year as well. You can be a beast on the OReb to pump up your offense too (something Portland did in the Roy era). There's numerous ways to create a great offense. It doesn't just have to be 3s, layups, FTs. It's about getting high percentage shots in general and finding the right way to get the right dristribution.
In fact, I'd argue Houston is shooting too many 3s and it's hurting their offense. Among the top 8 3PA teams, Houston is the only team not in the top 10 in offense. They lead the league in 3PA by 6 over #2 Phx. They should be trading these extra 3PA for some wide open long 2s/midrange. They're probably passing up a bunch of 45% long 2 chances for 20% 3s and 10% wild pain shots and it's why they aren't so good on offense.
Balance is often key. Houston seems to have gone so extreme that the strategy now hurts the offense rather than helps.

Going to somewhat disagree here. I agree on the defense part (though it should be noted some of those teams that lost had good defense as well). But focusing on passing over rushing does make sense. Seattle actually had a great passing offense last year by the numbers and Flacco and Eli had great great runs in the playoffs as passers (the NYG were also the worst rushing team in the league in 2011). In the NFL you need a good QB to win these days. An elite QB even better.
edit: Bosh is averaging 22ppg on 57%TS% on a team with like 2 other functional players. Come on IWMTB, Bosh has been quite good. In Houston, they'd have been the favorites.
I was apart of Spo ain't shit way back when but he's much better than McHale.
It's possible to win a chip with a coach who is merely good, but I doubt a terrible coach is gonna get it done.

Yea Houston's offense is trash. Another case of the analytics community stroking themselves and throwing objectivity out the window.
Regarding your football assessment. I never said you don't need a good or Elite QB. I said that offenses and strategies that are designed to put up 5000 yard seasons aren't what's winning Superbowls consistently. Superbowls are being won by teams that keep possession, don't turn it over, and play defense.
And you keep possession and limit turnovers by rushing. And not always rushing. Just balanced. Rushing a hell of a lot more than Brees or Payton did last year though, that's for sure. The Peyton Manning gimmick offense of a million and one 3-5 yard passes have failed him time and time and time again in the playoffs. And his one chip - he had one passing TD and a great team defense.
Brady won chips back when he relied on a dominant defense and great RB's. He was a game manager then more like Superbowl Eli and Wilson than Regular Season Peyton.
You can win that way just like you can win shooting 35 threes a game. But I think you have much higher chances of always looking for good quality looks and having a balanced offense than you do sticking to the Paint/Ft/3Pt rule as Gospel.
Waiters will debut tonight, coming off the bench.

Cavs were always going to have to overpay for Moz. Or a center in a general. I guess they could of went through the draft but don't necessarily seem to want to wait to develop a center. Moz is young, under contract, and they badly needed a center.

I was amazed when I saw that. The Cavs are completely and utterly fucked if anyone gets hurt or if Love leaves this off season
Parsons to Ariza is probably a bigger downgrade than Bosh to Jones/DM. Hard to play SVG/Moreyball with guys who flat out can't shoot. Parsons is definitely overpaid, but he's clearly a good 3rd option. The Bosh/Parsons frontcourt would be murdering guys from the corners with Harden on the wing and Dwight in the middle.
