I mean to be fair Bropez is injury prone and can rebound for shit.
By BranduilThree worthless players and a low 1st-round pick for Bropez? It's a huge risk for OKC to commit to paying him that kind of money beyond this season. We'd be doing Brooklyn a favor.
I'm developing a mancrush on Jimmy Buckets that rivals the one I have on Steph. After Jimmy's block on Harden, it's a tough call. I think I still like Steph more but damn. They are some good ass basketball players.
edit: oh, and Kemba is there too. He's a distant 3rd, but he's there. Rose is 4th and Lebron would have to be 5th.

Keeping with the theme of my previous post, is there any reason you would expect the Nets to NOT ask for Jackson/Lamb/Perk?
Besides, I don't think Lopez is the player that puts OKC over the likes of SA, POR, GS, or DAL. Sure, he can score, but he can't reliably defend the PnR, which coaches like Pop would exploit ruthlessly.
If the Heat get beaten out for the 8th seed by the Pacers, how much of a failure of a season is that?

We got Waiters for Lance Thomas and a trade exception acquired when Thabo signed with the Hawks.
I've never argued we won the Harden trade anyways.

Hey guys, back from a sort of vacation (well yesterday, but I got a fucking cold so didn't feel like posting).
Hope everyone had a good holiday season and new years.
Anyway, on to basketball. I hate the Waiters trade for OKC. As I said before the season started, I am unconvinced Waiters is any good at all and nothing has changed. I don't think he's as good as anyone currently in their wing rotation (rather play Lamb, Roberson, and Morrow). And if they trade Jackson for little to nothing, then LOL.
For the Cavs, I see it as a push. Waiters sucks and so do the players they get back. Maybe it helps them, but I don't think they can get worse.
For the Knicks it's obviously about reducing the tax bill (or eventually eliminated it and avoiding the repeater tax issue going forward) and cap space for signing or trades.
Anyway, trade season is starting to ramp up which is nice. Lakers need to offload Hill for something.
The more I watch, the more I'm thinking that the East will be Chicago and the West will be either GSW or Memphis (with Portland possibly in the mix but I still think they're a piece short). Just not buying the LAC or Hou this year and I feel like the Spurs or OKC may be too far behind (that said, if Spurs can grab a top 4 seed, I'd change my mind). And as always, a trade/injury can change things (and before Branduil says something, I like Dallas but not enough to come out the West).

They got rid of the best trade chip (even though he sucks and maybe the league outside of OKC realized this) for something that doesn't push the needle.
I don't know if anyone truly "wins" the trade. I like someone else describing the trade as re-gifting crappy xmas presents.
If Shump can manage to shoot a bit better, I guess they could win the trade. The pick may actually be kind of worthless depending on how things go.
Regardless, there's something wrong with the Cavs. Lebron is playing well below his norm as is Love. The team's defense is plainly bad and they have no way of either preventing drives into the paint or altering shots once in there and until that changes, nothing matters.
Matthew Dellavedova is shooting 9% — yes, 9% — on 2-point shots the past eight games (2-for-22). 18% on 2-point looks for season. #Cavs:coughs:

They were able to trade away actual New York Knicks without giving up a pick or taking on any contracts. I don't see how that's not a clear win for them. $28 million in cap space this summer, I think that's Philly's entire payroll.

Cavs certainly didn't win the trade. They got shumpert who is out long term. And JR Smith. They also get JR Smith for next season. No one else in the entire league wanted JR Smith. I can't wait to see JR Smith take the ball out of LBJ and Kyries hands. Will be brilliant.
I think... NY actually won. They cleared space. And got rid of JR. They could go on a 10game win streak for just getting rid of JR.
The only positive for the Cavs is that dion obviously didn't fit in that locker room. He needed out of Cleveland and Cleveland needed him out.
OKC are just stacking more young talent. I haven't written waiters off, I believe he needed a new situation. But I'm not sure how this improves OKC at all. Reggie is going to play over him. So is Morrow. Unless OKC aren't letting on about how bad YNB's injury's really are?
It does mean OKC are done with the lamb experiment.

Pretty awesome breakdown. Some notable parts:
What I was saying last night. I know some will disagree with me and we're essentially splitting hairs, but losing Shump without getting a pick back seems unnecessary.
Yes. Nick Young was doing this all night last night. As a coach, this is infuriating. If your role is to sag off your man when he doesn't have the ball, keep your head on a swivel, and pack the paint for defensive help and rebounding, that's fine. That's what Kobe does. He just doesn't ever close out once his man gets the ball back, and he switches on every screen. That's just legs of a 19th year star offensive player. But Lebron just flat out stands around. He knows Love can't defend the paint, he can sag towards the paint and gobble up blocks at an alarming rate. But he's just in chill mode.
Absolutely no effort defending the paint. None. Carlos Boozer esque. If Love played in Chicago, he'd be benched in every fourth quarter. It's so baffling to see a guy put so much effort into boxing out and getting positioning and absolutely none in protecting the paint. It's like he's thinking "If I try to block the shot or help on defense, how can I get the rebound?" I don't know if it's just bad habits, or just rebounding stats obsession.
Pretty awesome breakdown. Some notable parts:
The Knicks did not get enough for Shumpert in the end. They balked at taking a low first-rounder for him last season, and now they’ve lost him for tax relief and some flexibility they might not have needed. Yes, Shump’s appeal allowed them to offload Smith, but they got next to nothing for a solid young player, and they could have had $20 million in space this summer even with Smith around. That’s poor asset management, even if Shumpert had worn out his welcome in New York.
What I was saying last night. I know some will disagree with me and we're essentially splitting hairs, but losing Shump without getting a pick back seems unnecessary.
LeBron has been coasting, sometimes to an embarrassing degree, on defense. Chill mode, everyone. Here’s the tell that reveals a defender isn’t working: When his man passes out of some action and cedes control to a teammate, the defender will relax. He’ll stand up straight, lower his arms, watch the rest of the possession, and perhaps even creep toward midcourt in anticipation of a fast-break chance.

Love will never be a rim protector, but just trying can help. Raise your arms, jump in the air, and cause at least some sort of distraction.

Shumpert hasn't been great on defense for a while now. Mediocre shooter. Terrible handles. Bad off the ball. Hasn't been engaged as part of the team, and wasn't looking interested in being good before another major injury. Hasn't ever played a full season (Torn ACL and Meniscus in Left knee, And has now Dislocated his shoulder). Can we not go all NY Knicks and over hype the guy? He's not been good, nor promising, for a long time now. His player development has really stalled.
They may have just replaced disgruntled Dion waiters with emo Shumpert.
They also had Dion Waiters for another year on a rookie deal.
The pick is a 2015 top 18 protected pick. It's nice, but no game changer.
So they've added a mediocre injury prone player to a roster that has been struggling with injuries. A guy who was mentally checking out to a team that is deep in the struggle. A guy who complained about people not executing plays to a team that is basically playing And1 ball (no coaching or system at all).
Cleveland have not come close to winning the trade. The best piece they got wasn't shumpert, it was the draft pick. And it's a very late first round pick. Where if they want to fill a roster hole, with a big, it's going to take 2 seasons for the big to develop. By which time that team will have disintegrated.
OKC's move was basically redundant. And NY got rid of THE biggest locker room cancer in the league. Look at what getting rid of the second biggest in Josh Smith did for Detroit.
Win? Cleveland probably lost the trade.
I think the fundamental disagreement here is how we value Waiters. I think he's straight garbage and not worth anything, let alone a first round pick. I think Shump is a clear upgrade for Cleveland and a better fit but we'll see.
Cleveland is going to package that pick with the one they got from the Grizzlies, and maybe throw in their 2018 first, and they might be able to land a decent center.

This is pretty awesome. He says Kobe is the closest thing to Jordan he's ever seen, and Melo is the toughest cover because of how strong and skilled he is. Worth a read I think.
Also. Steve Blake on his time in LA from last night.
Kobe's favorite people aren't the most skilled. They are routinely the ones that don't break apart from his leadership style.
Pierce in the above article said something similar, but from an opposition perspective.

What you have to understand about Kobe’s game is that by taking that many shots, he’s meticulously wearing down the defender until he breaks them. He’s made a career out of making guys lose confidence in their defense and then continuing to attack them. He’s won five rings doing that.
If you want to have any defensive success against Kobe, you can’t break. That’s much easier said than done.

Who was giving up a pick for Shump this year? He's not worth it. Even a low pick, tbh. I'd rather take the pick in the draft and lock him in to 4 years at a crappy salary than either losing the pick for a guy who walks or re-signing to a potential contract that hurts the team. He's an average defender who shoots barely passable from 3 to survive and garbage everywhere else.
Shump could have gotten a pick last year because he might be decent and had 1 more year on his contract. This year, we know he hasn't been good and is an RFA. No thank you.
cavs lost. They added jr, i don't think you realize how much of a mistake that was. shump is decent but not all of a sudden fixes the defense issue at all. Still a big issue there.
