It's so weird. Dubs were down 10 with 2:15 to go, and the Bulls were down 9 with 2 to go, and the vibe from both games are totally different.

Now that Atlanta has the best winning% in the NBA and they went through the West like a buzz saw, do you guys believe they're the #1 contender? Or do you still put GS/MEM/SA ahead of them?

GS is the best.
Spurs+Jazz East (meaning Atlanta) is right there with the Spurs in the second tier though.
By VahagnBy MambaBy VahagnYou have coaches confused for statisticians or The Starters on NBA TV. The coaches picked Durant and Westbrook because the coaches think those two are two of the best players in the world. Who's the last guy of Durant's caliber in his prime to play through some segments of the season, be healthy when All Star comes around and be snubbed off the coaches list? They picked TD even though he's basically just a role player now because of who he is. Replacing perennial all stars who are healthy during the All Star break is damn hard.
Holy shit. TD is in the top 3 for DPOY and is still very good. You're a fucking moron if you think 15/10/3 in 30mpg is a fucking role player. TD didn't snub anyone. The only big men better than him in the West this season have been Marc Gasol, LMA, and AD. That's it. Yes, he's still better than Cousins and Griffin.
Yes, I understand why the coaches picked Durant and YNB. That doesn't make them less wrong. It's a stupid way of thinking. Durant has barely hit 600 min, he doesn't deserve it. When was the last time someone of Durant's caliber missed that many games and still played a bit, huh? You bring up that point but ignore that this might be the only time it's happened this century.
As for Westbrook, you're arguing because he's been there before? So has Lillard…just last year. If they're picking him just because of how they remember her, that's fucking stupid.
It's very simple. Lillard has been better than Westbrook and has played a lot more games. He's more deserving. period. End of story. If Lillard wants it, he was going to have to snatch it away forcefully, and he didn't. He could have taken Westbrook's and TD's spot, but him sucking for a month didn't help. And yea, I get that Westrbrook sucked too, but he was a shoe in. He's Westbrook.
You're literally defending the stupidity of coaches. You are aware of this, right? He was there last year. Someone had to snatch his spot away.Every year there are guys who have name recognition who shouldn't be on there based on performance alone, and you guys are still shocked the coaches don't consult Slaent or basketball-reference when they make their picks. It's subjective, and if you want to break through, you better unquestioningly earn it.
Oh, I'm sorry. I guess we shouldn't discuss who is more worthy of being on a all-star team is a fucking basketball forum.
Why are you even here?Besides, none of this was my original argument. It was that the cry baby shit is over the top, and that sucking for a month didn't do him any favors.
No, our issue is that YNB has been worse than Lillard, yet you ignore it completely.

Stay classy. "The stupidity of coaches". Lol. Yea you should discuss who's more worthy, is that not what I'm doing. I guess an opinion other than yours on a basketball forum isn't accepted.
No, TD isn't still better than Cousins or Griffin.
If posters on this forum were willing to think "I wonder why coaches think differently then me" instead of "they're fucking stupid" that might develop a different way of looking at shit. The basketball coaching community, me, and other people who disagree with you that Lillard didn't definitely and unquestioningly do enough to earn a spot this year aren't all fucking idiots. Come the fuck down from your ego trip.
No, i said you're an idiot if you think Duncan is just a role player. And you know what, I'd guarantee not a single person in the basketball coaching community would disagree with me. I never said someone who thinks Lillard didn't deserve it is an idiot, you're putting words in my mouth.
I said basing all-star selections on what someone did in prior seasons is stupid for the coaches. Defeats the purpose of what an all-star reserve is.
lol @ you calling someone out for an ego trip when all you talk about is how much tape you watch.
Could you give some examples of traits that are good for both offensive rebounding and defense? I'm going to do some quick regression between DRtg and ORB% to see how valuable the Doc/Pops strategy of no offensive rebounding is. I'm controlling for rebounding talent (through DRB% as a variable), activity levels (through BLK% and STL%), and height already.

Why are Memphis' defensive stats mediocre this year though?
Not counting tonight, they're 8th in defense and just 1.1 pp100 away from 4th. They've also had the toughed SOS among every team ahead of them in defense.
Mediocre seems to be an odd term for that.

lol.
Memphis has had the toughest SOS of any playoff team in the West. They have the 5th best MOV in the West (3rd last 12 or so games). They also had a bunch of games without Zbo.
There's a good chance that they end up top 5 in defense and top 4 in MOV overall. But we'll just have to wait and see.
I really like this Memphis team now that Prince is gone. I think they might be 2nd best in the West. Matchups will matter, though.
edit: they're about to hit the road big time. After the OKC game, 7 of 9 on the road. Big test for em.

They finished 7th a year ago, and granted, Marc Gasol missed significant time.
But I think on balance Gasol has not been as good on D as he had been in years past. But the early reads for lineups featuring Jeff Green are pretty encouraging.
EDIT: Also worth mentioning that they've crept into the top 10 in offense after being league average for so long. Really love the look and feel of this Grizzlies team and can't wait to see them battle GSW in a 7 game series.

I talk about the value of understanding the game of basketball from an X's and O's standpoint and understanding strategy being important. Nate Silver can aggregate polls and use statistical models to determine winners, but he can't run a political campaign or put on a convention.
And I don't measure basketball intelligence by whether or not I'm latching on to whatever advanced stat is popular this year and I think understanding a team's Playbook and a players strengths and weaknesses are a better use of my time then looking up OWS and DWS.
It's not ego to suggest being a statistician doesn't give you everything you need to know about basketball, it's just, for some reason, an unpopular opinion around certain people who feel that advanced stats are the sole basis of being enlightened on the sport.
Re: Tim. That whole team is more or less role players this year except Kawhi. The way Tim plays offense is the way a role player plays offense. He's obviously more talented than Splitter, but he's not Blake or Demarcus at this point in his career. His role is to set screens, get the ball at the top of the key or the free throw line with the sole purpose of swinging it to the other side, getting a few put backs, a few pick and pops, the occasional post up. He's an option on the floor, not the primary or secondary one and their offense is so fluid because Splitter can and does do most of the actions Timmy does. His entire defense is centered around exploiting the fuck out of the 3 second rule. If whoever made the Harden defense videos made a mix of Tim not leaving the key or touching an offensive player for 12-15 seconds at a time, people's perception would change. And look, kudos to him for figuring out what his body can and can't do at this point, but he can't play defense the way Noah plays defense or Marc plays defense or Draymond Green plays defense. He stays in the key and uses angles brilliantly. That's not worthy of an all star nod in my eyes just because his gimmick hasn't been found out by the general public yet.
People came for Smith in ways that confounded him, the ferocity and vitriol for so-called crimes on basketball that felt like the force of something else, something worse. "You know, I'm not a guy walking around with DUIs on my record, or bar fights," Smith told Yahoo Sports. "I think they expect that out of me. I mean, I understand criticism comes with this, but … I feel sometimes like I did something harmful to somebody’s kid.http://sports.yahoo.com/news/josh-smith-finally-finds-the-perfect-fit-with-the-houston-rockets-144750675-nba.html
"I have thick skin. But when analysts talk, including NBA analysts who played the game, they act like they didn't have any flaws in their game. They played perfect, and no one criticized their game."
Smith is no victim, but there have been few players so harshly judged in recent NBA seasons. For the extensive work Smith had done with "My Sister's House," domestic abuse shelter, and elsewhere in the Atlanta community, the NBA chose Smith as a finalist for its Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. He's never made much of a deal about his charity work, because he always figured that's what he was supposed to do.
For now, Josh Smith is sitting in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton in Boston, with his iPad and a box of Peanut Butter Patties that Boston Girl Scout Troop 79258 sold him after practice in Emerson College's student center. He's planning a typical off night on the road: Alone in the movie theatre.
I kinda feel bad for pooping on his 3PAs now. :\ Gooo Josh! I believe in you!
Hoping the Spurs hand the Clippers another L tonight. Hope Josh Smith plays well @ Detroit tonight. Hope he don't get too many boos.
Its pretty great the 2 most criticized contracts in the off-season have both looked like great signings.

His attitude is just medieval these days, knowing what we know now about joints, tendons and recovery. Honestly, if it were me I'd probably can him tomorrow and point any media types to a 40 page list of medical studies if they had any questions. He's obviously good but it's not even like you can say he's irreplaceable as a coach; they've got a lineup that everybody figures should be top 2 in the East, but they're about a week away from falling down to 5th despite wearing his players out.
He'll probably land with a B or C tier rebuilding franchise and maybe even get an SVG type deal that lets him run the show. He'd be better with younger guys in an organization that's starved for structure.

Good point how many games has he played in yet? I don't think he will have a linsanity'esque fall off though, his bread and butter are rebounding and blocks which aren't that easy to plan against. As for his scoring he isn't the front court player teams will likely zoom in on as long as he is playing with Bosh.

On the offensive end he's an afterthought, in the Chicago game he got buckets, almost every time he touched the ball no one was D-ing him up. He wasn't cutting or losing his man, his man just left him alone. Its been weeks since he started the streak so maybe he just is burning these teams (only caught a couple Miami games) but I somehow doubt it.
Plus Phee phee is hyping him so you know its just a matter of time...
He's doing work for sure and I expect him to still rebound like a madman but I'm not sure if its a hotstreak or not just yet. I'd bet he's somewhere between Deandre Jordan lite and Deandre Jordan 2.0 once the dust settles.
I bet Wiltside dates Scarjo and thinks Lupe is the truth. Explains why Moris is hating.
