Here's the other thing: JR's foot is a ticking time bomb, torn plantar fascia and he's playing through pain. Knicks didn't re-up Shump so this was his last year of his deal, where he said he'll test his value. Phil may try to reacquire him in FA since he liked him.

That's what I read from the move, also they may call up Thanasis Antetokounmpo or Langston Galloway in a corresponding move to get another SG on the roster.
