Terrible. Not much more to say. The size of this is monstrous, but mass shootinghave become so common Im almost numbed to the news
By giririsss Go To PostI get it. You're frustrated. And you should be. And annoyed. And downright fucking pissed off.
It's way passed that. It's apathy because this will never change.
well tbf James Howell, thankfully, didn't get a chance to kill anybody. So bringing him up compared to the largest body count in 25 years so doesn't seem very impactful...
My friend's wife just confirmed that he's okay.
I'll talk to him at some point this week. Dude just got out of the military too

The LA Pride Festival one was weird. You can browse his facebook. It's mostly cars, not liking Hillary and some conspiracy stuff. Not stable, but not homophobic.
The thing is that people reported Howell on the same night as the Orlando shooting so Howell was caught. People reported Mateen years ago, he was investigated twice and there was nothing incriminating found. Someone had to not report him recently for this to happen. (Of which there is some damning reports, but should probably be reverified.)
There's a lot of dangerous areas of law and debate these problems represent. One, part* the gun control talk has been focused on the idea that because he was investigated that he shouldn't be able to buy guns. However, he was an American citizen and he has those rights. He was investigated and no criminal wrongdoing was found, so he wasn't linked to terrorists and not a threat (only suspicious). Beyond that, getting on to those lists doesn't mean what people think it means. No fly lists are full of mundane reasons. A watch list is suspect to biased reporting. Do you really want to set a standard where you can deny people rights by telling the government they said wrongthink? That's a rather dangerous path to let the state go down.
Another concern is one presented by something a NYT columnist who specializes on ISIS tweeted about today in a long run-down. ISIS has opened up to non-connected acts done in their name. They use the internet for propoganda, looking to attract violent people, and then essentially give them the OK to use their name in justification, and reward them with the idea that they'll get double Allah bucks in the afterlife. One just simply has to declare their allegiance to ISIS before the act of violence, which San Bern killers and Mateen apparently did.
So ISIS as a state is more a loose than it has ever been and to fight something like that would involve internet censorship and further breaches of privacy. There is no network to track down and connect. Only propaganda and the disturbed individuals who follow it.
*(Or that an AR 15 has no reason to exist on a civillian, but he worked security and had certain security certs, which gets into how well private sercurity can arm themselves.)
edit: Actually, Mateen did know a suicide bomber but FBI said there contact was too distant and minimal for them to pursue further.

Google no fly lists.

The Daily Beast is all over the place as a publication, but this is an actual person's situation.
Clerical errors, basic suspicion, random suspicion, etc. I find it a bad path to go down to allow suspicion reporting to lead to rights being lost. If you are concerned about Middle Easterners becoming a target of mass persecution, then one way for that to happen is saying you can take a citizen's rights away for looking terrorist-y.

Marissa Delgado was shot twelve times but miraculously managed to survive. Obviously in critical condition.
I really hope she pulls through.

Reports are coming out that the shooter was gay.

People who frequented the club say they saw him there multiple times and someone even connected with him via a gay dating app. He had also come out to a college classmate.

in other sickness: A local baptist preacher gave a sermon this weekend saying the attacks were a good thing. It got recorded and will probably spread like wildfire. Church as a whole needs to condemn him.

"defeating al-qaida" i'm sorry, i must've missed that memo back in 2012. oh the good old days when there was just one big terrorist boogieman group that everyone could agree was the source of all problems. i mean, wtf is an al-shabab anyways. a haqqani. good thing all these bad people are all located in the middle east, away from the rest of the world.
what an inconvenience it must be for multiple nations to come together to better track and share information on foreign fighters, facilitators, financiers, and sympathizers across a rapidly shrinking world as international travel and communication is easier than it has ever been at any point in history. shocking such a list has grown. so someone might have to wrongly take their shoes off every once in a while. that would *never* happen back in the 80s and 90s. the good old days where airports were just beginning to become known as soft targets and insurgent groups were sure to speak face to face in wired up basements with honor
so those ....? few dozen people? out of thousands
It's right there in the ten commandments: thou shalt not kill. You'd think a preacher would know that.

I have now watched the full exchange three times and I am still at a loss as to what Owen Jones found so disgusting. And, no, that’s not because I am ignorant or stupid or a bigoted homophobe, as Owen’s delightful Twitter followers seem to think, but because nothing was said that could remotely have caused such a scene.
If Owen Jones wants to live in a world where people can only say what is on the officially approved list of platitudes, then perhaps he has more in common with Islamic State than he thinks.Oh. My. God.

Hobbyism is another reason. I would personally like to see federally regulated clip limits, but not bans on semi-auto riffles. The majority of gun violence in the US is done by handguns and it's not even close. If anything should be banned it's them. I'm also for thing like licensing similar to cars with renewals and mental checks. I only own a shotgun for bird hunting. I do agree with DY that people who own for safety are fooling themselves. Just by being around guns means you're more likely to be involved in a gun accident that use them in self defense.
By reilo Go To PostI said it wasn't for safety. Its for personal security, the average person isn't as good at it as they think they are - but hey do you.
By DY_nasty Go To PostDidn't say that. Said that AR-15s ain't for hunting deer.
Ohh. Well this is agreeable too. Though the .223 is good for hunting small shit if you have a farm.

By Fenderputty Go To PostOhh. Well this is agreeable too. Though the .223 is good for hunting small shit if you have a farm.honestly, i don't even think most states will let you hunt with 5.56 because its penetrating power isn't sufficient. its inhumane to shoot deer with that i think
Yeah. It's a security blanket, false or not
could be wrong, but i don't think you can do it in carolina at least
There is nothing more American today than a mass shooting, the quickest way for the wicked among us to join the ranks of the reviled. Their motives are many, but their opportunity is limited only by their gun and ammunition magazine brand preference. In this country, the federal government limits duck hunters to weapons that carry only three shells, to protect the duck population. But you can buy an assault weapon in seven minutes and an unlimited number of bullets to fire with it. For every McDonald’s in the United States, there are four federally licensed gun dealers and an untold number of unregulated private dealers who can legally sell an unlimited number of guns out of their homes, backpacks, and car trunks without requiring a criminal background check or proof of ID.http://apps.bostonglobe.com/graphics/2016/06/make-it-stop/
No, the federal government does not limit duck hunters that carry only three shells. That is Arkansas.
Like is it that hard to get facts correct when you call yourself a journalist?
Spend time on animations not research!
What's the point of mentioning how many FFL's there are and then still complaining about private sales in the same paragraph?

Think it's all just a jumble of shit that doesn't matter and contradicts itself is more the point there.
