Fifty people are now known to have died in Saturday's shooting in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and a "state of emergency" has been declared, the city's mayor has said.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-36512308
The gunman, named by officials as Omar Mateen, was killed after taking hostages.
Another 53 people were injured in the shooting at the Pulse club.
It is the worst mass shooting in US history. Police described it as an act of terrorism.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-us-canada-36510172
The man being investigated for the gun attack at the Orlando nightclub is 29-year-old Omar Mateen, the BBC understands.
It is believed the US citizen was not on a terrorism watch list, though he was currently being investigated for a previous unrelated criminal act.
A police officer inside the club returned fire, the gunman then took hostages but was later killed when a SWAT team stormed the club at about 05:00 local time
The gunman was wearing "some type of device", police chief John Mina said. Earlier reports suggested he had been wearing a suicide vest
The FBI says the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism
There are "suggestions" the gunman had "leanings towards" radical Islamist ideology, the FBI says
By n8 mile (ft. sueninem) Go To PostUnbelievable. My heart actually aches for them.Sadly I find it very believable.
Only in America.
Tragic but all it says to me is that Trump just went up in the polls. We're that stupid and vengeful a nation.
i mean melting all the guns and giving me justification to take sword fighting lessons would be the best day ever
Sending prayers makes me as an individual feel better about myself and my belief in prayer. Flowers are expensive. This way I get to feel involved, join in on the prayer ring and it's as if I'm contributing something. Everyone else is doing it so...

By LFMartins86 Go To PostTalked about it in Football thread but it is so bizarre how little coverage this is getting.
Little coverage? It's everywhere if you are in the United States. Maybe you aren't, I dunno but I feel like its being heavily and appropriately covered.
God damn Orlando.
This is awful to watch and read about.
We should be better than this, but nothing will change it. Hate will be hate. Guns will be guns. Laws will be laws.

Tired of the default answer being to pray harder
How about doing something to mitigate some of this BS
Fucking depressed this morning
RIP to the victims man

This post was great, thank you Phaze.
I'm so sad right now.
Praying is a part of public grievance, which is healthy. People from Orlando are donating lots of blood, which is something they can do which directly helps. I don't understand the snide remarks about praying.
Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don't want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!
Guess who tweeted that? Trump

I'm not against praying. At all.
I'm just tired of these mass shootings and certain folks who have the ability possibly mitigate the problem basically telling folks to pray harder.
That awkward moment when you remember the god to which you're praying after a shooting is the god that signed off on it.

Obama like 2 weeks ago -
I can't stop known terrorist sympathizers from going into a gun show and buying all the guns and ammunition they want
Would have been nice if you know, he could.

How many people need to be senselessly murdered before real change comes? The loved ones of those 50 people don't give a fuck about your prayers, neither do any of the loved ones of the other hundreds of mass shootings or the loved ones of the next hundred mass shootings.
By DY_nasty Go To PostPraying isn't reform.
Yeah nothing wrong with praying but it would be nice if people took action like voting so senseless tragedies like this won't be so common.

So we get a Democratic majority in place, they legislate proper gun restrictions, and then proceed to lose the next fifty elections because this country is that stupid.
The gun laws are not going to change. That's a waste of breath conversation. If 20 dead kids can't get something through Congress, surely a bunch of homosexuals won't move the meter.
Anyone who speaks out about actual legislation change is just putting a target on their back. A literal target. They would be killed before the bill reached the floor. No one has those balls.

Cruz already spoke. Said nothing.
Now it's Rick Scott's turn.

If anything Congress is upset he didn't take more with him
what shit news to wake up to.
but you're free to make a separate thread on why a loving God would allow this to happen.

I'm sure all that anti-gay rhetoric our own government officials espouse had absolutely nothing to do with this.

Read about this last night. Then it was only 20.
Sad. Just, Sad.
He doesn't really need to settle, our own government officials call for the death of gays. Dudes running for president this time around haven't even tried to dog whistle about it, just been straight up homophobic "take 'em out" shitheels.
If we can't be honest about how little one half gives a shit and the other half practically incites these horrid events then what's the point.

It also alienates the people in Congress who ARE trying to get shit over turned.

Just because you have one moron running around painting groups of people with broad brushes doesn't mean everyone else has to do it too.
I don't know how this isn't front and center on some TV pundits show. Listing every politician who keeps voting against gun laws. Naming them and shaming them night in night out, making sure they don't get re-elected in next years election.
I need definitive proof of everyone in congress wanting people dead? Does someone really need to couch their frustration with our government not giving a shit and not doing shit in nicer terms? Does every fed and state government official need to assert their desires to see people dead and I need to provide these receipts in order to criticize their lack of doing nothing which ends up with the same result?
"Our hands are tied" is not acceptable.

By DY_nasty Go To Postdon't care != wanting people dead
Yeah. You're making a HUGE leap / assumption.
I get it. You're frustrated. And you should be. And annoyed. And downright fucking pissed off.
And frankly, if it wasn't an elected official that ignored this shit, but a salaried employee, and people could "directly indirectly" place blood at their feet they'd have been instantly fired.
Same result. Has been for how many years now? Still not acceptable but again if Sandy couldn't change the conversation we're a well and truly fucked up country anyway.
Then with something like this you also have the rhetoric from so called "leaders" and media outlets talking all kinds of shit about a group of people, inciting violence, hate, whatever.
Lone gunman though, every time.

No, not the same result.
A government wanting its people dead looks drastically different. And I'd really like to keep the argument away from that type of thing right as soon as possible. America has a problem that most countries will never have to deal with because there isn't a fuckton of weapons to be found under every stoplight, bridge, and garage sale banner. Plus its looking like this guy was a mercenary on top that.
Shit's fucking terrible, one guy from my squad in Texas was out in this shit too apparently.
