While it could be true I remember Wojina writing something similar about Melo wanting to get the money and then try to get traded when Carmelo signed. Carmelo could be trying to have his cake and eat it too like he normally does. Him likely missing games until the 15th gives it some validity as well.
This story could also possibly him wanting the knicks to fix the roster. Its weird they can trade JR and TImmy now, so the knicks supposedly waiting for Dec 15th means they want to attempt to move players like Jason Smith, Larkin, and Dalembert possibly even Melo as well. How does that makes no sense? The knicks need talent overall and cheap talent is always a good look. Even if they intend to build mostly through FA, having a Young Center is not a bad thing.
If a team was a player away then yeah tanking makes no sense, but you yourself admitted the knicks are not a player away. So logically tanking is a good thing.
Some people say "but the player won't be a major contributor in Melo's prime." If the knicks pick a center that might not be true. I am not saying any of these picks will turn into superstar centers but a lot of the top pick centers have become solid contributors for their teams in 2 -3 years. Also since the goal is for the knicks to use the triangle a good/great front court would definitely help carry the team as Melo slows down.
If the Knicks want to attract free agents, then they need to show that they can win now, not 3-4 years from now. It has look like it's a place worth going to.
