I'd be more worried about giving Thibs GM powers. I don't think he's proven he has the sort of long term thinking required for that. Probably the opposite actually.
By DY_nasty Go To PostI also look at how Clifford and Thibs are from the same branch and I know how bad Clifford is with guys returning from injury or dealing with nagging injuries.
They believe that if guys can walk, they can play. Old school as hell.
I certainly think Thibs is not(or was not in Chicago) in the same league as Pop or Kerr when it comes to respecting and factoring in the scientific connection of player health:performance but I do wonder if he really was this extreme outlier or just a strong personality with an intense media spotlight on him. I mean that sounds like half the coaches in the league TBH.
I mean Monty Williams(Davis excluded) was a fucking prick about injuries, including calling guys out publicly directly or indirectly if they wouldn't play injured. I never really heard Thibs do that sort of shit and Monty isn't the only one I have heard pull that crap. But he didn't coach in Chicago and wasn't known for yelling on the sidelines.

Probably the opposite actually.I don't know about that... kinda felt like he was fighting for his job every season... so in order to keep his job he played dudes to death...
But I do agree that we have no idea what a Thibs player looks like or if he is cut out to do both duties well
By thekad Go To PostI'd be more worried about giving Thibs GM powers. I don't think he's proven he has the sort of long term thinking required for that. Probably the opposite actually. That is my real concern. I can already see a LAC situation where micromanaging Thibs the de-facto GM becomes Thibs the coach's worst enemy.
Don't get me wrong, if I could swap my Pelicans organizational position with what the Wolves are getting right now I absolutely would, but I think coaches that chase arrangements like this haven't worked out and in the long run they bite off more then they can chew.

Thibs absolutely did that. He had this famous interview during a pre-season game following the Spurs 2014 championship where the Spurs old guys all played and Thibs basically said something to the effect of "see the Spurs? They just won a chip and they're playing big minutes in pre-season. That's what champions look like. You sacrifice and you play and you don't complain"
Of course it was hilarious because the Spurs are the premier organization in terms of resting players.
‘‘I’m watching San Antonio, and they’re going after it,’’ Thibodeau said. ‘‘Parker, Duncan, they’re playing huge minutes right off the start. I think it’s a strong message what they’re saying right now. They’re preparing themselves to defend their championship. And so in order to get that way from them, you’re going to have to wrestle it away from them. They’re not just going to give it away. Your mind-set has to be right.’’
This was in OCTOBER.

By P S Y C H Go To Postwho would be your preferred choice?
Regardless of their interest, I had Thibs #1 and Brooks #2. Those were pipedreams though. (Oddly, it was thought Brooks was the sure fire hire during the season and then his stock rose.)
Out of the leftovers, I prefer Blaitt and Messina. Nate interests me a bit, but he's been on a break for awhile as a HC. I guess I prefer VDN out of the retreads, but I feel like you've given up once you hit that point. Like I said, I'd rather give someone like Ewing a go than go that route.
Luke Walton is the strange outsider. He may want to make the jump now and nobody else is giving him a chance. I think this is too difficult a situation for a first-timer though.

Vlade dadi.

I can see them being an 8 seed now they have a real coach. Would be a tight race though

The problem with Blatt is that from everything I've read it sounds like after being a big shot in Europe for so long he expects automatic respect from NBA players. There's a good chance that he wouldn't get along well with Boogie, and that means he'd be fired within a year. Blatt is the coach you get for a young team with no headcases.

Also I would love a woman HC but don't see it happening... maybe ever.
I mean yea, the FO has to be behind her. They can't be dysfunctional as shit. You can't try that shit in Houston and Sacramento or anything - but it has nothing to do with being a woman, if any coach doesn't provide immediate and instant success trying to deal with headcase immature superstars there - they get cast aside in those kinds of organizations.
I think it could work in places like
Toronto, Miami, Atlanta, Detroit, Indiana, Orlando, Milwaukee, OKC, Dallas if any of those coaching vacancies open up and the management stays in place or like Kidd and SVG stop coaching and just run the FO.

Becky will probably be Pop's successor if anything. Seems like it would be the best spot for her. They wouldn't have to worry about players not respecting her because she's female since she's been an assistant for some time now, or it's the least likely to happen there.

All the male assistants will be picked up by other teams, and like pointed out, this world is still insecure and petty so most won't take a chance on her either because they don't want to sign her, or they're worried the players might not be so accepting. I figure since she'll be learning from Pop for awhile, she would be a great hire.

By IWMTB19 Go To PostBrooks being hired by WAS would lead to Beal and Porter becoming good players, yes or no?
He's got no better chance to show off how much he was responsible for player development in OKC than to get something out of both of those guys if he's the hire.
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostHe's got no better chance to show off how much he was responsible for player development in OKC than to get something out of both of those guys if he's the hire.I got more faith in Porter taking the leap than Beal these days. Brad is such a fucking cat dude. The guy really acts like he's never been a part of a team environment in his life some times.
These playoffs have put Brad in a better light for me--guys showing up in the playoffs is a thing and Brad does have that check marked. He'll only be 23 next year--so I don't really know what his ceiling is, but I don't really have any expectations either way. I think a Beal/Gortat, maybe throw in a first package for the Kings would be a good look for both teams at this point--but it's unlikely.
Porter can't put the ball on the ground. Until he begins doing that he's nothing but an efficient roleplayer. He's regressed defensively this year too.
Oubre should be snatching someones starting role at some point. Probably not as likely next year with Brooks at the helm (if it happens).

By DeadspinThe Catholic Central High School boys basketball team, located in Windsor, Ontario, has a pretty good player in Jonathon Nicola. The 6-foot-9 center is so good that his coach put together the workout video above, because, as he told the Windsor Star last year, Nicola had a shot at going pro. That dream is probably dead, though, because Nicola is apparently a grown-ass man.lmaoooooo

That had more to do with Lebron and his ego / control shtick than it had to do with Blatt.
I do agree that a Woman coach would have some difficulty, but the arguments used against her now are the same arguments used against athletes of color back in the day. Locker room dynamics, respect blah blah.

Bruh, I even said it would be difficult. On a team with stupidly large egos, like Lerbon, even more so. I'm just pointing out that the reasons given to not hire the first woman head coach are the same as previous arguments and they're not good enough to not try to break the mold. Sometimes issues have to be forced along, regardless of it ruffles some feathers. These are grown men making millions of dollars and they would be publicly shamed in today's social media climate for disrespecting their coach due to their gender.

I think the Wiz miss out on Brooks
Ted isn't the type to pay big dollars for a coach in combination with Ernie being the type to fix in on one target and not letting him leave the room during negotiations. So the 7 million a year offer sounds like desperation on the Wiz side to get a deal done. The fact that it (apparently) hasn't been enough to get done yet is a sign that Brooks might have his eyes set on the Houston job or elsewhere.
