By Rob Go To PostFull tank job to me implies that Knicks went into the season planning to tank.
They gave up midway once they realized how bad they were and even then it wasn't a real tank because they won meaningless games that made them go from possibly getting KAT to praying that Porzingis wasn't Barg 2.0
No one's suggesting that they went into the season planning to tank. But LA hasn't done that for years either. Adjusting midway through and making obvious tank moves qualifies as tanking. Just cuz it starts in December instead of July.
I feel that too often teams go overboard with vets when they have young talent . I felt Cleveland did that when they first had Lebron and ended up with decaying talent that couldn't take the next step. There's a happy balance. San Antonio has always had it and GS has a bit of it now. Bogut and Iggy are vets, but much of the talent is young. You don't want a lot of dead weight there just because they have 10 years in the league.
By rodeoclown Go To PostThe Wolves really shouldn't try and just skip ahead with veterans. Other outside factors were at play like Gugliotta leaving, the Marbury trade demand, but that's how you end up with the supporting cast that Garnett had for years and years.Concur.
The plan should really be to just stay the course, draft a guy like Jamal Murray and continue the build. This is not a free agent market to go out spend a lot of money. With the guys they have, they'll still win games.

It's about getting 2 or 3 quality vets. Guys who are willing to sacrifice minutes and stats for the team. But still be quality guys in the locker room. Because eventually you want to keep bringing through more of your own talent so when, as an example, Bogut retires, Ezeli steps in and starts. No problems.
Easier said than done though.
The Knicks ended up with the worst record in the history of the fucking Knicks last season and they weren't tanking? Y'all doing too much...
I mean if it makes you feel better about the team sure, tanking was number 1, 2 and 3 on the priority list.
By giririsss Go To PostConcur. This is what Demps tried to do, but failed on execution. I like his young vet philosophy and think it is definitely worth another team trying.

You have your draft picks use them wisely and maybe a shooting wing or a goon PF type vet
As much as I hate on Al, he was huge for our franchise. We'd be Bucks-tier if we hadn't brought him in to help with the culture change

That was two end of the season Tim Hardaway jr buzzer beaters that cost them the Towns. I am pretty sure was one of the reasons he got shipped out on Draft night. Also I hope his career is short cause fuck him he had to know the plan at that point.
Right now I am still 50/50 on whether Phil plans to tank in 2017. It's suppose to be a great draft and outside of Melo complaining there is no reason to not say fuck it and be fiscally conservative and tank 2 more years. I think Melo actually believed the statement he said a few weeks ago about having all the power and Phil's last press conference was basically him saying "nope the power is mine". So let's see where that goes
By Rob Go To PostI mean if it makes you feel better about the team sure, tanking was number 1, 2 and 3 on the priority list.Knowing what actually happened doesn't make me feel better, having KP does though.
Cats always trying to rank up in here with misguided Knick trolls I swear...
And Zeus as much as I would like to tank next season I don't think we can run with the true tank lords with a healthy Melo, Rolo and an improved KP. And if really though if the plan is to tank then fuck Phil for not trading Melo when he first got here. You give a 30 year old on a bad team a 5 year near max (with a no trade clause!) when the team was going suck for at least 60% of that contract? I'm sorry that's just incompetence.
By masud Go To PostKnowing what actually happened doesn't make me feel better, having KP does though.except it wasn't a troll? knicks were just legitimately shit for majority of the season and they weren't trying to tank. Tanking is what Sixers did for the past 3 years or what Lakers were doing this season.

Tank = bad season but not every bad season = a tank.

Your probably right about them trying to get better. I read somewhere that them Winning 30+ Games after a 17 win season is actually a decent bounce back historically. I just don't think Melo is willing to stay for the Knicks to maybe work there way into a low 40 win team. Especially when next year is likely going to be another year where being a low 40 team doesn't equate the playoffs. Plus Melo has a 8 mil trade kicker. If he's going to leave during this contract it's this summer. Also on a flip note I think Phil does another cheap summer and he's all but said he's not getting Thibs. That is all the things Melo said he didn't want to happen this summer.
On your second point I think Phil kept Melo to see if it could work with getting a marquee FA (it didn't and it won't) and to have a draw to sell tickets.
Right now KP is the guy Phil said agents said their clients wanted to play with, and having a guy who legit looks like a future star is going to fill seats. If Melo wants to legit have a chance to win it during his window he's going to have to leave.
Gonna be an interesting off season, so many teams have money to spend. We're at fuckery alert level orange.

I'd be shocked if he isn't back next year. Only questions are if we keep our pick, if we send out the vets and what level of talent Mitch can get to sign in LA. Lots of moving parts right now.

Losing him would do wonders for us.
It's like Presti went out to find increasingly horrible players just to see where Gondo's breaking point was.
Realistically though does anyone really think KD doesn't do that 1 year reup with a player option? Cause I can't see a better scenario for him unless he wants the security of a longer deal and I still don't think he leave OKC

I could see KD doing a 1 yr deal but there's zero guarantee he does it in OKC.. If they don't perform in the post season I see him going east or signing with GS.
KD Doesn't seem like a ring chaser. But doesn't seem like he's willing to waste away a career with a franchise that isn't bringing in the talent to win either.
I don't see him doing a 1 year. He's the sort to want a plan.

He'll do a 1-year deal regardless of where he goes to take advantage of the cap jump after next season.
I have a hard time believing he'd bail on Russ too. Real chance that KD, Russ and Serge will hit free agency at the same time.
This year is weird too because of the insane competition from the Spurs and Dubs. If we win 2 or more series that's a good accomplishment.

If KD leaves hopefully he goes to the East so LeBron stops getting a free ride.
Otherwise just stay in OKC. You already have Russ there and unless you ring chase in GS, you probably won't find a better situation. It's not like the Thunder suck, they're maybe the third best team in the league.

the problem with okc is that they cant improve because clay bennet doesnt wanna pay
the idea is that kd might want to go to a more well-rounded team rather than having one superstar next to him and then basura

People think Bennett is cheap because we traded Harden. It was always about waiting to pay the tax strategically. We couldn't have known the cap would skyrocket.
And our roster is well rounded, but it isn't perfect. We aren't the Spurs or Dubs but we're still damn good.

I don't have any faith that the OKC Front Office can put a competent team together around him.
By blackace Go To PostSpeaking of coaches any feedback on the Nets hire?I like it. I wanted anything but a rehash and Atkinson was one of the most highly sought after options. He has a good rep and can develop players.
A lot fucking better than Calipari or Thibs.
I'm 100% satisfied with the Atkinson and Marks hires. About as good as we could have expected.

So basically - "anything tangentially or directly related to Pop please"?
By Rob Go To PostNot a bad idea since people related to Pop have been somewhat successful
Sure. And these guys might be too. But, promoting assistants, even Pop/Bud ones, still means you're dealing with unknowns.
By blackace Go To PostSpeaking of coaches any feedback on the Nets hire?
He's a good assistant with solid rep around the league. It'll be a good hire as long as the Nets keep their expectations in check.
Who would you rather have who was available?
I'll take a promising unknown over a known failure (Calipari) or a known player killer (Thibs) every time.
Might've given David Blatt a look personally but Atkinson will have better synergy with Marks.

By shun Go To PostWas Brooklyn not looking into Ettore Messina? Because he formerly coach russia? That's one reason I like this hire, actually; if ownership was still pulling strings and calling the shots we probably would've gone after Blatt or Messina who both have close ties with Russia. Atkinson on the other hand is clearly a Marks hire. It shows that Prokhorov has gone hands off and is giving the GM full control, which is probably healthier in the long run.
Also consider that this move was executed without anything leaking at all. No one even knew we were talking to candidates.

If he's leaving, he ain't taking a one year deal to stick around for Russ. He would be sacrificing his bird rights year with whatever team he's leaving too.
If he takes a one year deal and stick around I think that would be a good sign he's planning on sticking around long term.

He can qualify for 35% of the cap after his 10th year. I'd imagine he signs a two year deal with an opt out next year.

Still ... if he's planning on leaving, he should sign a 2 year with an opt out with whatever team he's planning on signing with for the extra bird right year. If he's planning on leaving it doesn't benefit him to do so after sticking around for another year.
Hawks point guard Jeff Teague said best news he heard was the Nets hiring assistant Kenny Atkinson. Teague credited Atkinson with helping his development and cited his contagious enthusiasm and energy as things the Nets will benefit from greatly.
"He believes you can improve as a player, even at the highest level," Horford said. "Before he got here I was pretty much a shooter on the pick-and-pop. I was never really driving. Kenny has challenged me to put the ball on the floor. It's something we've worked on together, and now it's something I feel comfortable doing."
“I mean this guy wakes up at 6 a.m. every morning,” Lin says. “I’ll text after a game at midnight, 1 o’clock when I go home and I’ll say, ‘Hey can I look at those turnovers. Can I look at the upcoming team? How they run pick and rolls?’ And he ’ll have the film ready when I walk into the facility the next morning. I can’t say enough about that guy."
