Unless I missed it
Unless I missed it
Just made very little progress over the last couple of days but really love the game so far! Firelink shrine is great, def my favorite DS NPC hub place. Also first time ever i went for a strenght build and put much more points into vigor than I normaly would, feels like I just unlocked easy mode. But yeah only killed a handful of bosses and one NPC so far, wished I had more time right now. :(
By Hitch Go To PostBetter hub than Demons? :OIt's very VERY similar
Playing bloodborne has made this game harder than it needs, always go in the offensive hoping to regain health by attacking, and I've forgotten how to use a shield.
I haven't fully beaten BB. Gonna try to do that before I pick up DS3 on the cheap in a few months. Looks awesome though.
By n8 Go To PostwaitThere's a ring for that, but Estus is so plentiful it's not an issue.
you cant regain health by attacking?
fuck i'm dead
I own both Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but I've never made any progress whatsoever on either of them.
I find From's games really interesting and I enjoy watching other people play them, but they're too fucking hard for me and I just don't seem to have the time to teach myself how to play them properly.

BB curve was hard, but it clicks eventually. Moving to a more defensive combat with shield instead of dodge will be challenging.
I've not played a DS game though. Do I need to play 1/2 before 3 to enjoy?

@Fender, you can jump in at any point in the series really
The start of this is so much easier than Bloodborne. Died once to the first boss and I'm by the second bonfire in Lothric.
Loving it so far. Love the aesthetic of it all.

By Hitch Go To PostReckon you'll go back to DS1 if you like this?
Probably not. Tried playing it before Bloodborne came out and it just felt awkward to play.

wait till it goes full BB aesthetics π
Yeah, aesthetically it looks a LOT like Bloodborne - way more than I would have expected.
I've read that some Souls fans are kinda peeved by that.

Got to the first post-tutorial boss and loved it, even if it was a bit easy, The levels compared to Bloodborne and Dark Souls 1 are brutal, definitely feel like any enemy will kill me if I get even a bit greedy.
Day 1 - playtime: 2h55m, level 18
Beat Iudex Gundyr on the second go. Got confused by its second stage first time round, started attacking from the other side and I lost it :lol. Okay boss fight. Nothing special, but nice little taster.
Beat the ice dog without even getting hit, felt like a fucking boss.
Shit myself when that dragon started burning everything in Lothric, worried how I was going to get past. Got past easily enough, went to tweet Yurt and then got killed by a knight. Sigh.
Grabbed the key to let that bloke who wants me to help his wife out (hopefully I don't miss her if she's by the high wall!) and just opened the shortcut from the lift back the first bonfire.
Gameplay is great; bit overwhelmed with where to go at some points, and because I used a guide with Bloodborne so I could ease myself into it, I'm nervous going round every corner.
Hope I'm doing the right thing completely shunning magic as well, all my estus points are going into health while I learn to parry effectively.
Surprised by how little items I've found so far - 4/5 different weapons (all swords), got a Raw Broadsword +2 at the moment and default knight armour.
Music in Firelink Shrine is lovely. Bit worried I'll never come into contact with people in the bloody place :lol. Should I buy the key for the tower behind it asap?

don't worry about the key for now, and you'll be drowning in items after the next boss I think. ;)
Damn this game is beautiful
Explored Firelink* but can't kill the guy outside it yet. Looks like my only real option aside from grinding for the key is going to the Highwall.
Don't like the lack of a narrative bridge to explain why you can fast travel to a bonfire you've not been to yet, hopefully that'll be justified at some point.
*big Shadow of the Colossus vibes
Started with Knight btw. Same old Souls uncertainty. No idea whether to reinforce an early weapon or save the materials, and no idea how to split the points between strength and dexterity.

i finished it before it came out officially in the west, gave my thoughts before
easiest in the series
arguably the shortest
one lore interesting hidden area, one "nostalgic", one with the best boss in the series (not the hardest, though)
ranking it:
below Bloodborne (the best combat and general gameplay in the series)
slightly below Dark Souls 2 (i recently began a new game and the sheer amount of content gives it the edge over the first one)
equal to Dark Souls 1 (without going to much into spoilers but DS3 mostly ignores DS2 in terms of story and feels like a direct sequel of the first)
above Demon's Souls (had the chance to revisit it recently, it hasn't aged that well to be honest, really clunky)

Taking me a while to get used to rolling instead of dashing, and the stamina drain when you overuse it

Yeah, same. Plus, parrying; I am abnormally shit at this.

Never been able to do it
Do you guys try and memorise the stuff you can't do yet?
I keep a list on my phone since that stuff piles up so quickly

Tempted to restart with the class that starts with fast dual-weild scimitars. It'll be like starting out with the Blades of Mercy.
Lambda is absolutely right in saying this feels like a sequel to DS1
My non-spoilerific subjective opinion that could change tomorrow
-Boss for boss, this has exceeded even Bloodborne (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Phenomenal encounters...the big four in particular were fucking HYPE and I can't fucking wait to experience them again! A few easy ones, but not a single shit one.
-NPCs, covenants, secrets and sidequests: BACK ON FORM! Jesus I think I ended up missing an obscene amount ππ despite going through the areas with a fine comb. Some were mutually exclusive so I guess it isnt possible to one-run it all? Which is good, more reasons to replaaay πΈπΈ. BB and DS2 (astonishing considering it had 3 DLCs and a remastered expansion) were both lacking in this category, the former had no meaningful sidequests or npcs except two, and the latter had just one straight forward sidequest and the rest were nothing to write home about.
-the areas were all wonderfully convoluted from start to finish and just fucking FUN to go through. Usually From's map designs and ideas fizzle out by the end but here it's actually quite the opposite, they saved up the absolute GOATS for last.
still plenty of genuinly different builds, weapons and playstyles to try outtttttt
you can deflect spells with the same mechanic π

Can't wait til I'm good enough to batter that cunt with the long katana thing behind Firelink
Could probably remove all armour so my roll is fast enough to get behind him on his attacks and backstab him

How do you compare equipped gear to inventory gear? Maybe I'll get used to it, but as of now I prefer the old inventory screen with the clearer and bigger slots. New one looks a bit like it was designed for PC players.
I need to regain my patience and keep my distance, learning that guy's attacks. Can't tell when he's going for a single swing, or a triple hit, and its leading to me rolling in there on the first swipe, then while I'm getting up, he's twatting me in the cranium.

By n8 Go To PostThe start of this is so much easier than Bloodborne. Died once to the first boss and I'm by the second bonfire in Lothric.I don't know if I'm just good at the game or what (I'm not) but I rarely had to try a boss more than twice to beat it. You might have the same experience I did.

Weird that you are having so much trouble with the guy on the left of Firelink Hitch, I died to him maybe 4 or so times before I decided to fight him when I'm a bit more levelled up, so I went to the first main area via the bonfire then came back and he was gone, lol. Left behind a cool looking item tho unfortunately I'm not strong enough to wield it :p

If he was further away, or behind other enemies, I'd resist the temptation to try killing him now :P
Maybe for you he fell off a cliff after killing you
The Coiled Sword thing is cool as fuck btw. Hope you do that with other fires in the game. Also love the fact that the giant has a massive throne
Not sure about the fast travel system, but really like everything else.
Enemy spoilers
Tried to arrow the dragon that spits fire, but it's harder than in DS.
Speculation spoilers:
Is there a reason for Andre to be the only NPC that moves his mouth when he talks to you? Is it because he's not like everyone else? Weird for it to be just a bug.
This is just to ensure that I don't piss Yurt off.

Let me level up at bonfires
Let me fast travel from the start
Let me fast travel to some bonfires, not all
I know there's no justifiable reason to prefer having to run from bonfire to bonfire even after fast travelling, but you get much less of an idea of the environment when you only go through many of them once or twice.
Similar to GPS in open world games. It prevents me from learning the layout of the world as I can't restrain myself from using it.
By n8 Go To PostWhat guy by firelink? Near the start of the game? What have I missedAt the entrance to it, if you circle around to the left instead of going in there is a staircase with some proper aggressive cunt at the top. Not sure if there's anything behind him. Way too early to be doing death runs for items and exploration :P
You mean the iudex lad?

I'm not saying this is the reason why they do it, but returning to Firelink often is important from a character perspective.

I think leveling up at bonfires will render the Firekeeper and the hub (crucial for various NPC quests) useless.
the loading takes like 7 seconds, I don't mind going back at all.
