WSJ on PS4K:
UPDATE:
Sony Corp. is planning to sell a more powerful version of its PlayStation 4 machine to handle higher-end game experiences, including virtual reality, people familiar with the matter said, while continuing production of its existing console that has so far sold more than 36 million units world-wide.http://www.wsj.com/articles/sony-plans-new-playstation-for-graphics-heavy-games-1459152941
Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power, though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog, one of the people said.
The new console would be announced before the planned October release of the PlayStation VR, Sony’s new virtual-reality headset…
UPDATE:
By Moris Go To PostStory at GiantBomb.comToday, multiple sources have confirmed for us details of the project, which is internally referred to as the NEO. No price was provided, but previous reports indicate that the NEO would sell at $399.
The NEO will feature a higher clock speed than the original PS4, an improved GPU, and higher bandwidth on the memory. The documents we've received note that the HDD in the NEO is the same as that in the original PlayStation 4, but it's not clear if that means in terms of capacity or connection speed. Starting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a “Base Mode” which will run on the currently available PS4 and a “NEO Mode” for use on the new console.
The NEO will not supplant the current PS4, but will exist alongside of it and use the same user environment.
Sony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players—so don’t expect NEO owners to get a level editor or a special Rocket League car that you won’t have access to on your original PS4.
That said, so long as both systems have the same feature, the NEO can run an improved version. A local co-op game that features four players on the base PS4 could offer an eight player co-op mode on the NEO, for instance. But again, don't expect those differences to transfer to online modes.
PS4 Base and NEO versions of a game will also need to have parity with regard to peripheral support. So don’t expect NEO Games to have exclusive VR modes. Sony makes no mention of PlayStation VR in the docs we've seen, so it's hard to know what that means for the persistent rumors that this upgraded PS4 will be able to support PSVR without the "breakout box" that the headset ships with. That said, so long as the NEO's upgrades apply to PSVR games, developers should be able to get even more performance out of Sony's VR headset.
Games released previous to the NEO can take advantage of this hardware upgrade, but only if developers decide to patch their titles.
what a mess, most folks (including me) see consoles as appliances, they drop 400 and are good to go for half a dozen years
they say you can still play new stuff on the OG PS4 but i give it a couple of months till the first outsourced gimped ports start popping up
they say you can still play new stuff on the OG PS4 but i give it a couple of months till the first outsourced gimped ports start popping up
They're not phasing out the OG PS4 though. The only way for this to work is for PS4K games to be compatible with OGPS4 games. The OGPS4 will then see a price cut to be a lower barrier of entry. If they don't do that, then they completely fucked up, but I don't think that'll be the case.
PS4 games already look great and I don't find VR appealing so I'll be sticking with my current system.
Plus the NX is the only system in my budget this year. (I know, I know I'm a sucker)

Price is currently $399.99 they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99 we were guaranteed the price will be no higher than $499.99 (He mentioned the CPU upgrade quite a bit almost as if they haven't really decided on a final spec could be a pricing issue.) also there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users but that could change.
They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster. They did not say exactly how fast but that is was running at a higher clock speed while being much smaller than the original.
It will have a 4k blu ray player and will upscale games that are not natively 4k.
Also there was talk of some sort of VR lounge for the media player app which is supposed to be getting a substantial upgrade.
It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.
It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."
We were also given a list of games that will be available at launch that will directly take advantage of the PS4K where the differences are and I will quote him "Significant."
For the PSVR
Eve Valkyrie
Robinson
GT Sport
For the PS4K
Deep Down (Thought this was dead)
GOW4 (This was the exact abbreviation on the sheet I can only assume its god of war 4)
There were more games on the list but these are the ones that stood out to me.
That's all I can remember off the top of my head I'll see if I can get any more information.
Price is currently $399.99
It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.Called it. I expect OGPS4 to be $249-299 now.

Hard to say but that does not seem a very big bump in performance. Seems like a Radeon 7970 with imperceptibly better CPU and RAM speeds.
By P S Y C H Go To Postis that powerful enough to provide 60fps variants of games going forward?
Maybe at 1080p. Given you cant get 60fps in a lot of games at 4k with a 980Ti then fuck no
All of it sounds solid and thought through from a business standpoint. Techwise: Sure Polaris 10 is being finalized now anyway and there is probably a higher margin selling a new box with the new GCN 4.0 than keep on building the old GCN. It's faster, it's more efficient, it's smaller and stays cooler.
But man do I feel shafted having bought my PS4 in November.
In combination with PSVR this might be just as costly as buying a Rift or Vive if PS4.5 launches alongside it.

By Laboured Go To PostAny suggestion this is a Polaris part?
Makes sense from the timing. Furthermore there were some hints that one of the Polaris 10 chips was running 32 CUs. On the other hand though, Sony was using an APU and are going to use one again. Current AMD APU out is the Carrizo, with Zen, it's next generation APU, probably being introduced early 2017. The Zen architecture was supposed to feature HBM and I don't see this happening for this PS4 refresh.
Back to your question. Timingwise it would be great if it turns out to be some Polaris architecture inside, but I'm uncertain if you can cram any of it onto an "old" APU design without problems. I'm just not well versed enough in this field to tell you if it's possible.
It would piss me off extremely if we get a new APU, CPU and GPU design in the end of 2016 from AMD and PS4.5 would use none of it.
DF reckon 36 CUs.
It's a good upgrade as long as games actually take advantage of it. It's all up to the devs now really.

As someone who's bought a launch console for quite a few gens, this is pretty upsetting. I plan on getting 4K when OLED comes down in a year or so. I would have future proofed my PS4 and bought a more expensive option up front too. One of the big reasons I game on consoles is because I don't have to upgrade hardware every 2-3 years. The first uncharted game hasn't even launched yet and it's already being leaked that a new PS4 is coming. If games start being developed for the PS4.5 and my system struggles to play those games it will be like salt in the wounds. This could all be alleviated with a buyback plan, but nope.

Like I said numerous times, this thing needs to be $399 and the PS4OG needs to drop to $249-299 for this to work. If they don't do this, then they're dumb.
It's such an increminental upgrade if those so specs are true I just don't get it, like why lol, if this is all for 4K playback seems like a bit much imo
Damn it's true after all? Why though.. Makes no sense for such a small increase.
Also lol at people expecting a trade in deal.

that's such an insignificant jump. you'll notice a few fps spikes, but that's it.
are any games even reaching that 8gb vram?

I really don't give a damn what price they sell the new PS4.5 at. The fact that they're pushing new hardware so fucking fast into a gen is super upsetting. Why adopt early if you're no longer confident the hardware will last?
If software performance becomes splintered half way through a fucking gen for must have games I'm going to be super pissed. I can't even imagine the secondary market for an OGPS4 would be good either. Who wants an old system that won't play games as well as the new one?
What's the difference between this an the master class? I can hook a PC up to my receiver / TV and get controller support. Steam has a healthy environment for purchase and playing games. I guess master class doesn't have Naughty Dog? lol
The more I think about it, the more I feel like this is going to be a mess.
Devs are going to have to spend even more time on a game because people that knowingly buy inferior tech are upset they can't talk shit to PC gamers or something. Time = money so this just cuts into resources and devs have trouble trying to develop for 3 systems as it is.

every news i hear of this is either regular people complaining about it or reports of devs complaining about it
i don't think the higher ups got that folks still look at consoles like appliances, no one buys a new vaccum or a fridge every 2 years
it's gonna be this gen's PSX

so...will it have a 4k bluray decoder or whatever so we can get the new 4k blurays?

I just worry that Sony may have put too many eggs in the PS4K basket. Ideally (for me), it just comes and goes with a whimper, and we keep the current console model.

By P S Y C H Go To PostWait, the release isbplanned before the PSVR??
PSVR is coming out in October right? I can see them announcing a date at E3 that's before October. Releasing a newish console so soon after E3 is pretty cool. If they do I wonder how that might impact PSVR sales. I doubt many people are buying a 400 dollar PS4k and a 400 dollar PSVR.
I just want a reason to buy an HDR capable 4k tv set
I'd actually be shocked if any of the console at all is even 4k related in terms of marketing. There's no way they can get Uncharted 4 at 30 fps locked at 4k with the rumored hardware and thus far there aren't even reports of of UHD Blu-Ray support.
E3 will be interesting

The more and more I think about it the more and more PC gaming becomes attractive,. I'd still have base ps4 because of the exclusives (which are being released at a horrible rate this generation imo) but yeah this cycle is just so off putting. I know people say why not just ignore it etc and I tbh I can't articulate why I feel so anti this. Especially now games like horizon are going to be pushed back as a result, just leaves a horrible taste in my mouth
