I have nothing to say, I just want to up another thread because I feel sick ever time I see the mentally ill black person raped post hovering around lol
Fuck Thiel. Just because he has money doesn't mean he should get to decide which media companies stay in business.
I still have hope Gawker will ultimately survive and prevail in the Hogan suit.

Sounds like if Ziff Davis successfully acquires them, they'll shut down Gawker.com and keep the other six sites running.

Gawker file for bankruptcy
"If you're a billionaire and you have power and access to the media, you should expect now and then to get the occasional critical piece," said Mr Denton.
"A wiser approach to getting angry and trying to sue a media company out of existence is to … develop a thicker skin," he added.
"If you're a billionaire it's totally fine for me to invade your privacy even if it's not at all relevant, get over it".
Fuck.
Off.
What Gawker think they do, is very important and should be protected. What they actually do, quite often, should not be protected.
That should be for the courts to decide on the merits of each individual claim (or in a class action claim if enough people want to sue).
It shouldn't be up to Peter Thiel to decide what forms of speech are acceptable for the rest of us.
The only reason he's able to do this is because he's so rich that tens of millions of dollars is an affordable price for him to satisfy a personal vendetta by manupulating the legal system. That is scary to me.

It's also scary to me that Gawker actually wanted to set a precedent that publishing revenge porn is a-okay.
The court decided. Gawker lost. What difference does it make who paid the fees? It's not like he paid off the judge.
Fuck Gawker.
Fuck Gawker.
The case is still under appeal and the US court system gives the media a lot of leeway to publish content of interest about public figures.
And the person paying the fees matters massively. The public knowledge that Thiel is funding endless suits against the company basically forced them into bankruptcy.

I've already given my thoughts on this matter but needless to say I'm on the side that wants to see Gawker disappear from the internet for all time.
Unfortunately it looks like they'll be able to save themselves with Chapter 11.
Gondo, I honestly think you're letting the specter of a rich libertarian blind you to right and wrong in this case. Your hatred for Thiel is not unreasonable, but it is truly irrelevant here. Bad people can support just causes.

I don't see the cause as just. If Hulk wanted to sue Gawker on his own that's fine with me. The penalty of being forced to declare bankruptcy is out of proportion to their "crime," which probably would not have happened without Thiel's support.
The reason we have a legal system is to adjudicate each case on its merits. What Thiel is doing is the equivalent of spamming the legal system as a strategy. He's manipulating it in the most cynical fashion possible to destroy his enemy.
While Gawker might occasionally go over the line, the threat of massive money silencing the press for personal reasons is far more dangerous to me than the threat of Gawker publishing typical tabloid material.

I suppose we've made our feelings well-known throughout the course of this thread. I'll try to wait for new developments before posting again.
Fuck them.
The former editor, Albert J. Daulerio, a defendant in an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit brought by the retired wrestler Hulk Hogan, was asked by the plaintiff’s lawyer where he drew the line when it came to posting videos of people having sex....
“Can you imagine a situation where a celebrity sex tape would not be newsworthy?” asked the lawyer, Douglas E. Mirell.
“If they were a child,” Mr. Daulerio replied.
“Under what age?” the lawyer pressed.
“Four.”

That's a complete straw man. You have yet to present a single legal opinion or article suggesting that such a precedent would be set; you can't because it won't.

Maybe don't publish revenge porn and you won't catch a $140 million judgment.

I don't like the Thiel intervention in terms of money but it's not new that money dictates court cases, and at the same time like how in the fuck does anyone defend Gawker's shenanigans lately. Like how fucked up of an organization do you have to be or a person to treat testimony like you're an edgy 10 yr old in the principal's office. Are they really what you want to pass as the "press" gondo? Those pricks?
They also exposed someone in an effort that helped along a blackmail attempt by a male escort. Gawker doesn't care about journalism. Don't let some spin job fool you. The politics of the financial backer of a legit court case is extremely irrelevant.

That was one the vilest pieces of journalism I had read in a long time
http://web.archive.org/web/20150717013027/http://gawker.com/conde-nasts-cfo-tried-to-pay-2-500-for-a-night-with-a-1718364339
They cross the line from time to time, and Denton himself personally squashed that story after it was published and editors resigned over it.
But the network of blogs puts out a lot of vital stuff: http://gawker.com/heres-what-gawker-media-does-1779858799

By KingGondo Go To PostThey cross the line from time to timeThat's a hell of a way to describe revenge porn, blackmail, and the outing of homosexuals.
Regardless you won't be losing out on your "vital stuff" because Chapter 11 will keep the company intact as it goes up for sale. I only wish the consequences were more severe.
Thiel wasn't closeted. I'm still waiting on someone to explain to me how Hogan's tape qualifies as revenge porn. And I wasn't aware they had blackmailed anyone.
And even if the worst of these allegations were true, I still say that the way to adjudicate it is on a case-by-case basis, not to have someone who isn't a party fund a raft of lawsuits with the express aim of putting them out of business.
I'm surprised more here aren't worried about increasing numbers of the mega-rich taking Thiel's cue. Is it just because you find Gawker to be unsympathetic?

By KingGondo Go To PostI'm surprised more here aren't worried about increasing numbers of the mega-rich taking Thiel's cue.I don't know how many times I have to repeat that the circumstances here are nearly impossible to replicate, especially with any publication that follows standard journalism ethics (or has a sense of shame). Even 33MDM ultimately found that argument compelling. You insist on ignoring it. You are instead spinning an alternate reality where the media publishes revenge porn all the time and any billionaire could shut down The New York Times on a whim.
The fact is that the correct verdict was reached in this case and not even Gawker's defenders dispute that; all this noise about Thiel is pure deflection.
By KingGondo Go To PostYou could just answer my question. How is publishing private sexual footage revenge porn? Such a question answers itself.
Or not. Whatever.
When I think of something published for "revenge", I don't think of a 9 seconds of a tape that might have been leaked with the knowledge of the participants including a well-known celebrity who constantly bragged about his sexual prowess.
Guess we'll see what the ultimate ruling is.
