GPU basically died last night, currently trying to get everything off my PC's HDD and onto my laptop with the bit of detail that I can discern on the screen. Could just buy an external HDD reader, but would rather save the 25 Sunaks.
Looking to spend around £750 on a pre-built tomorrow, only needs to be good enough to watch videos and play Dota.

On Edge, the site appears to be playing embedded youtube videos without any interaction. Not sure if this is the provider or Edge.
e: does not happen in Firefox. might just be an Edge issue
e2: changing Media Autoplay from Limit to Block solves the issue in Edge

Searching for products on Amazon feels like browsing shit on the dark web or a competitor in another country in a foreign language.
None of these products look real or legitimate -- especially at entry-level prices there's just an overabundance of products that look and sound the same and all fake all the same.
I had to check Wirecutter just to make sure I wasn't crazy whether this one product was legitimate or not.

Went back to the Apple Store to trade in my old phone and get a refund on my 15 pro.
Was talking for a bit and asked about Apple Vision.
Turns out it is being delayed in Korea because any place that sells it needs to have an optician on site because it has lenses.
Thought that was pretty wild. Korea really likes to make things complicated.
I guess easy for Apple as they only have four stores in Seoul, but I doubt other places would be happy to hire an extra person just for one product.

Likewise, using Google is just as bad if not worse.
It used to be that the rule of thumb was to never bother looking past the first page for your results as the quality of the resultset is one of diminishing returns and/or very poor.
Now, the opposite is true -- the results on the first page are awful and SEO-pilled. Not to mention paid media infused to the point where you can't even trust any of it to be organic or user vetted.

What do BuzzFeed, Rolling Stone, Forbes, Popular Science, and Better Homes & Gardens have in common?
They all know which are the best air purifiers for pet hair:
The problem is, for the most part, these publishers recommend products without firsthand testing and simply paraphrase marketing materials and Amazon listing information.Congrats to all of those venture capitalists that made a lot of money of this trajectory of the internet. You da real LVPs.

Haha good fucking job EU you brought the fucking cookie banner opt-in to app installs now. Is this really what people want?
Been using Bitwarden for a while now. I'm not privacy/security crazy where i think it needs to be self-hosted or anything, so their free service has worked really well for me. Super easy migration from Lastpass.
I did it. Fedora Sericea is installed. Helldivers 2 appears to work fine, though I only tried it long enough to walk around my ship. Still need to learn all the keyboard shortcuts and get all my dev software working.
It looks like I may miss out on using the official and optional software for my fans, water pump, audio interface, and gpu. Depends on if I can get them working via Proton/WINE or find some alternative software to do the same thing.

i was able to create a win11 vm on my linux box and got gpu passthrough working well enough to stream nba league pass at full rez and speed!
the only thing left is to fix usb redirection so that i can do set-and-forget management of some of my hardware that only has windows management software. i think it is just a permissions issue, so should be easy
doing that will let me update the firmware and change on-board settings of my mouse, fans, fan controller, rgb controller, liquid cooling pump, and liquid cooling leak protector
i think once i get that situated, i'm basically at home in my new linux setup. might need to do a couple things like get my windows license transferred over to the VM and test playing a game on the win11 vm to see if it is viable for the few games that won't work on linux

The Amazon-owned platform officially shut down business in South Korea on February 27, leaving streamers scrambling to migrate their viewers to alternative livestreaming platforms. In a December blog post announcing the shutdown, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy placed the blame on the country’s high network fees, saying operating in South Korea had become “prohibitively expensive.”
Twitch gets 300,000 daily viewers from South Korea, with the country’s top streamers attracting millions of followers. For Korean streamers who rely on the platform to make money, the situation has become a painful lesson in how helpless creators are in the face of changing platform rules. Although Twitch said it would “work to help” streamers move their communities, creators told Rest of World the company has offered little support with the transition. While Twitch alternatives exist, relocating to another platform is a complex, laborious process that involves learning the ropes of a new online space, without losing existing followers along the way.
The problem stems from a “sender pays” rule instituted by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT in 2016, to address the growing interconnection demands of video streaming and other bandwidth-intensive services. The rule requires companies to compensate the receiving networks for the traffic they send. It’s meant to tax heavy senders like Netflix and YouTube. Livestreaming sites like Twitch face particularly steep fees, as low latency is critical for live content.https://restofworld.org/2024/south-korea-twitch-exit-problems-stream/
This is WILD. What a dumb law. I don't blame Twitch for leaving.
I've heard that Korea's protectionism for tech (Samsung!) is crazy and those laws are just another method of that. It might have just been speculation regarding a local company starting a streaming platform though.

When I moved to Korea in May 2010 they didn’t even have iPhones or Xperias. Shit started getting better in 2011.
I don’t think any of the Japanese brans even bothered to enter the TV market. They knew there was no point. Only cheap chinese brands offer an alternative to Samsung and LG.
Pretty much everyone in Korea has unlimited date, so everyone is constantly streaming. Government been wanting to make streaming services pay for years for the amount of bandwith they use.
Korean companies have no option to pay, but they can’t compete with the global streaming entities, who mostly refuse.
8GB starting RAM starting is nuts and unsurprising both. Got my partner an M2 last year maxed out because I was sure they’d keep the same options for this one
By Laboured Go To PostI imagine some of you will buy one of these, unfortunately.I'm sorry, but is that functionality as basic as it sounds?
By barber Go To PostI'm sorry, but is that functionality as basic as it sounds?Kinda? It's baked into the SoC. Anyone needing more external monitors is upsold to the MBP which support more monitors, have more base memory and storage, and have fans for sustained workloads. The MBA is for light "work" and pointedly not for power users.
