I would like to apologize for saying reilo has a Jag. It was unfortunate, no doubt due to low blood sugar.
He doesn't drive a Jag, he drives the car of the common man, a Porsche.

Well, I did it. I bought two Rufus Unleashed APs and a Fortigate. Will be spending Independence Day weekend installing and configuring them.

my god, is that Evilore's music?!
Anyone else here with a pixel 7? My phone has been overheating and draining battery life the last week or so. Googling the issue and I get articles saying they fixed it last month lmao. What is going on

Everyone knows advertisers will pay for ads on a husk of a site when the tech is this “great”
I’m always reminded what a shitshow the Reddit stack is, it falls over far too often, isn’t compliant for accessibility all these years later (which is why Huffman has graciously let some apps have API access, because free labour should go one way only), and they’ve made the experience worse with nearly every update.
They changed their video player recently to one that barely works so they could show more ads, and chase that TikTok lifestyle.

They also had $500m in VC funding over the years that made their founders super fucking rich.
The one thing I will give YouTube credit for that they intimately understand: the creators ARE the content and value of the site. It's why they are so generous with their ad revenue sharing and their creator tools. And even then they probably don't pay out enough.

I'm excited in all the new ways I will find to fuck up my home network with these professional devices. I hope either the AP's aren't strong enough to drown out my attached neighbor's wi-fi or that I can adjust the signal strength on it somehow.

You would almost certainly be able to adjust that, also.
I actually manage a ~40 AP UniFi system and we went with it to save money over going Ruckus / Aruba so it's pretty wild that you went Ruckus for your home lol
I got it off the recommendation of a friend who also does that stuff for a living and runs it for his home. I also got it for like 50% off msrp.
I'm doing this partially out of interest and partially out of wanting extreme overkill so that my gf doesn't complain about how me watching twitch somehow kills her in-home wireless streaming performance. Lol
E: she specifically asked for a better home network for her birthday, so that's what she's going to get (upgrading from a few eero's)

The Fortigate was purely me wanting a gateway/firewall that could inspect packets at nearly 1Gbps for years now (the 80F).
Well damn that's quite the upgrade. I'm only really well experienced with Palo Alto's but i know a lot of people like those Fortigate's. Did you get a subscription to their ATP service?

Ok, got the FortiGate installed. Because FortiNet reasons, I had to install the firmware in defined steps. Took like 6 firmware upgrades, in all. Reset to factory defaults and got the internet working by moving the internal switch from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.2.x.
Not going to bother with anything else, for now. There are a bunch of things I could subscribe to, but I'm going to hold off until I understand everything a bit more. Especially when some of the subs can cost over 1k a year. Will try to find a bundle or something, too, to save some money.

Just going through the various menus looking at stuff and lol this is a lot of information I either don't understand or don't know what to do with.

By diehard Go To PostI wish i was more familair with FortiNet stuff so i could helphah, I appreciate it. It looks like the documentation on how to configure features is competent, but I will have to look up what all these terms means and whats best practices regarding the use of them.
With that said, I was able to enable IPAM for everything connected to the network, enable ipv6, set some local domain names, enable visibility of features I might use, and disable visibility of features I won't or can't use. I also used a built-in tool to make some small optimizations and security improvements based off its recommendations and got a little familiar with the UI. Oh, also setup a DDNS using FortiNet's service and am trying to create a TLS cert for it that I can apply to the admin portal to get rid of the unsecured site warning (currently in a queue because the rate limit on Let's Encrypt for fortiddns.com was reached).
Next on the docket is learning how to give a devices static ip's, dns hostname entries, and forwarded ports.
If you have any general questions about networking or certificates don't hesitate to ask. (Probably find a quicker answer by just googling it, though).

Diehard, if I want to properly separate my IoT devices, personal devices, home lab server(s), networking hardware, and other categories that I may be forgetting, what would be the best approach? Should each category get it's own subnet? Or should I put them on separate VLANs? Will I have to do something like forward ports between subnets/VLANs if I want devices on different ones to be able to talk to each other?
Or should I just go read and learn about this a lot more before doing anything? And what topics should I look up?
I thankfully already have backed up my "stable" base configurations from this weekend before I do something to screw it all up.
e: also, I have IPAM enabled, but no clue how to effectively use it. I definitely need to read up on that.

Oh man you are getting complicated quick!
Subnetting and VLANS are pretty different things, I've heard their differences simplified as "All VLANs are subnets but not all subnets are VLANs."
I think at the very least setting up a different subnet for those devices should be pretty easy. Likely, by default a new subnet will still be routable so it won't really offer any extra security... but it's still worth doing/learning. Tagging ports for different VLAN's will be effective for either opening or completely closing off a device from other devices but your real security will come from inter-network firewall rules.
Are you able to setup a second SSID for IoT specific devices? Maybe start with that then connect IoT devices to only be able to access the internet, with a firewall enabled. Doing just that you will probably learn a lot.

Looks like I should have talked to my boss about this before I bought things because he could have resold them both to me at a lower price. I will be taking him up on his offer to buy my FortiNet sub through him for cheap(er), though.
I don't buy it. All this equipment for a home network? Something's not right here. Kib starting his own dark web perhaps?
Pretty sure I can convince enough on you on here to give SLAENT $470/yr in Patreon money for no benefit
My previous company just announced a metaverse partnership with MLB, and it really hasn't popped the way I know they wanted

Yeah so you can't really scroll through the timeline outside of the mobile apps.
You can look at individual accounts on the website (https://www.threads.net/@geoffkeighley) but that's not really a functional way to view posts.
