I expect that you'll be fine Daz, all of the things I mentioned had free replacement programs to fix them, just a word of caution about new hardware I guess
By reilo Go To PostI'm curious to see what happens with all of the efficiency gains and whether that impacts longevity. Not having to kick the fan into jetplane mode to keep the thermals cool must have some sort of positive impact on a component's life, no?Only the battery, really. Otherwise, you are talking about reducing a cpu's lifespan from 30 years to 10 years if it was on the verge of throttling whenever it is in use and is in use 24/7/365 vs the same but under normal operating temperatures.
There is some electro migration shit that can happen that may eventually make the system unstable, but that is usually quickened by increased voltage, not heat.
Installing ipadiOS 15 and crossing my fingers that it can fix what 14 did*
*After updating to 14 last year or whenever, my iPad pro now randomly restarts. I can maybe get 30 minutes of screentime before it dies. Effectively it's dead.

Does that happen in general usage or have you noticed a pattern where it happens with a specific app?
General use. Can just be turned on on the home screen and it'll power cycle. Use to be my primary alarm clock, too unreliable now.
Could be bad timing and its just broken but it started happening immediately after updating to ipadOS14.

Have you spoken to anyone at Apple about it? They've fixed shit like that for me before our of warranty
By JesalR Go To PostHave you spoken to anyone at Apple about it? They've fixed shit like that for me before our of warrantyI bought it used from Ebay years ago. I doubt they'd do anything.
Just installed Manjaro Linux onto a near 8-year old laptop this morning. It's quick and everything seems to work, though I haven't really tried bluetooth or hibernate/sleep, yet. Using the btrfs filesystem on it because I could.
Only been using it for a couple hours, but it makes this old laptop feel fast. Discord only takes like five seconds to load from a cold boot!
I imagine it's not a bloated OS with ecosystem features that try to keep you inside productivity apps which is where most big OS fail.
By reilo Go To PostI imagine it's not a bloated OS with ecosystem features that try to keep you inside productivity apps which is where most big OS fail.Yeah, it's purposefully kept pretty lean. The XFCE front-end I'm using is also supposed to be the most light-weight of the three officially supported front-ends. The other two are KDE and Gnome. There really aren't any fancy graphical effects. Relatively barebones. But everything works, and works quickly.
I'm also using the minimal install so it came with even less software installed than normal. lol
Oh, I guess I should link wtf I've been talking about: https://manjaro.org
Hope whichever twat designed Dell's charger jacks got fired
It doesn't latch into the port and just falls out all the time. Maybe it saves wear and tear in the long run but it's pretty annoying, even given the fact that I only got this laptop because the charger port went in my old one.

It's the USB-C port. The previous generation of Dell laptops had real slack ports and at least for me, I had to call in a lot of motherboard replacements because of it. The newer models we're getting are better. Not great, but better.
The latitude line actually had both USB-C charging and the barrel connector until this most recent generation. USB-C is nice but having both was great.

Good, it means regulations are doing their job to some degree. Need more concrete laws in place to force their hand.
How is it almost 2022 and Microsoft still can’t handle more than like a 25mb attachment? Idk if it’s the same with other email services but I was in a rush this morning and couldn’t try them out.
I can download a 100gb game in <10 minutes but can’t send someone a 50mb email.

Don't most email servers block attachments over 20mb. Use a cloud service you pleb. Nothing worse than having recieving a massive email.

Yea if your work is asking for attachments that size in emails then the problem is the person asking lol
The Kyle Rittenhouse trial in Kenosha, Wisconsin has once again gone off track because of basic technology problems: Rittenhouse’s defense attorneys today requested a mistrial because prosecutors sent them a drone video via email, which compressed the video in size. This is after earlier arguments about what pinch-to-zoom does or does not do, and the judge struggling with the screenshot features on his Galaxy S20.
Assistant District Attorney James Kraus told the court that “going from an iPhone to an Android, it appears, somehow compressed the file […] we did not know that this would occur. We gave what we fully believed was the full file to Ms. Wisco […] it came in without objection and was an exhibit for four days, displayed for the jury on full screen.” The prosecution says that they did not know the version she received was of lower quality until just a few days ago when Wisco displayed the file she had received on a defense laptop in court.
By reilo Go To PostYea if your work is asking for attachments that size in emails then the problem is the person asking lolGot a regulatory request and they are like send it over email or print I all out and deliver it. Which is fucking mental either way cause it's almost 800mb of data. I'm like don't y'all have a secure share server for confidential information requests; obviously being a government entity the answer is going to be no. Now they are asking if I can put it on a encrypted flash drive. Imagine me now having to go to corporate security to get fucking approval for that.
See you can't even act until you throw it up the flag pole and then everyone will be annoyed with you like you are the unreasonable one

By reilo Go To PostContext?Tristan Harris the guy from the social dilemma talks about social media and what it is doing to America. He gets into the weeds and it's just depressing how pernicious what these mega corps are doing. He and Daniel present solutions so it's not all dome and gloom. I know some here don't like Joe Rogan but this is worth the listen in it's entirety. Joe doesn't talk much.
The only thing shocking to me about social media corps manipulating users into staying on their platforms is that people are shocked by it. Whatever FB is doing has been the game of advertising and big box retailers and car dealers and so on and so on for years. You, the customer, aka user aka consumer (drug terms, think on it) are the commodity.
It's not inherently bad I just wish there was transparency around it so customers knew what they were getting into.

Yea I'm aware of that part from the first time I heard Tristan on a podcast years ago but it's even worse than that. I know you came from the tech market so you have a better insight than us plebs.

I have a guy at work, very smart normally, who won't get vaccinated against Covid because he heard some doctors on Joe Rogan say that it's all crap and that they had created a cure for Covid but big Pharma shut them down.
So fuck Joe Rogan.
