At least you have a fingerprint scanner, Rodeo 😔
First device with Face ID, and whilst the underlying technology is very impressive, it feels like a straight up downgrade to Touch ID.
It’s not even for pandemic mask related reasons (which is shit), but because it inherently requires an extra step of swiping up and the angles it does and doesn’t work from.

By Andrew Go To PostAt least you have a fingerprint scanner, Rodeo 😔I fully agree. People seem to be fascinated with FaceID because it seems more futuristic or something and it’s “hands free” (on devices that you use with your hands anyway).

As far as I see it, FaceID came into existence due to lack of room for TouchID on the iPhone X. It’s a sidestep at best, even if the technology that enables it is more advanced.
TouchID is reliable, fast, actionable when you intend to, even at a distance or at an angle, unaffected by masks and other changes that it “learns over time” (at the expense of failed logins). Since the iPhone switched from TouchID to FaceID I changed my passcode to 9999 (or similar) because it’s annoying waiting for it to fail until you can login and I just start pre-tapping that digit furiously.
Given the chance of returning TouchID and burying FaceID into the ground never to be seen again, I wouldn’t hesitate. Extra points if that removed the notch in favor or a punch hole camera.
I would much rather in-screen TouchID for the phones, I hate FaceID there. FaceID is very much better for the iPad with how I use it, compared to how TouchID is on the MacBooks
yeah lack of touchid is a dealbreaker for me. i really want the camera upgrades, but not enough to have to deal with faceid. hopefully next year...
Apple is really behind the times in some areas. I honestly thought they re-introduced the fingerprint ID to their phones.
The new Ipad Pro has the fingerprint scanner in the power button, I thought it was a feature they brought from their phone line.

$649 for the 2020 iPad Air 10.9" with 256GB. Is that the lowest people think they will go? I'm looking into buy two for my parents.
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostI must be out of things.Yeah same honestly. TouchID was great when the phone is flat on the table so I get that I guess, but FaceID is great.
I love faceid
By Punished* Go To PostI like the new Android update.I've been using it since the betas earlier in the summer and about the only thing I don't like is the new wi-fi toggle. It's a much needed refresh.
Removing Google pay from the power menu was a bad move. Now you have to unlock your phone, then select it from the draw down menu. Why?
I don't like a few of the UI changes, it's added needless steps. At first it seemed like a decent refresh but now, I don't know if it added anything useful.

You sure it isn't being killed in the background by the OS to save battery? It can be overzealous that way.
Hey guys check your email if you ordered a Pixel 6 cause they gave me free Pixel Buds A series. Was a pleasant surprise.
By s y Go To PostThis trend of phones shipping without chargers is so fucking lame
Just know that it's not because of the environment. Two boxes, one for my Pixel 6 Pro and one for the 30W charger is not better.
Wondering if I'm becoming an old man or if modern smartphones have become completely commoditized.
I jumped from an iPhone 8 to 13 Pro fairly recently, and while there are certainly leaps, I have a lingering feeling that I don't really give a shit.
Like, the screen is better... but I'm using it for the same stuff. Browsing the web, tiktok, etc. Would I care if I didn't have a high refresh screen? Probably not. I used the camera for the first time over the last couple of days, and it's absolutely better, but not the drastic jump in some scenarios that I expected - at least to my eye.
The resentment when I went out to buy a USB-C iPhone charger was palpable.

nah, i said it before but for me phones have been solved in their current form. i only update when my battery has gone to shit. 120hz is great but besides that i don't even feel much of a differencen between my s7 and my s21+, the latter was still super fast for what i do with a phone (browsing, whatsapp, phone calls). camera has been good enough for years too.
same for my work iphone 13.

By s y Go To PostThis trend of phones shipping without chargers is so fucking lameyeah but i have like 200 usb-c chargers already, really no need for another one.
I have like 4 or 5 old USB-A chargers that are collecting dust. I'm fine just getting a cable, maybe give people the option to buy a brick for very cheap with a new phone, or drop the price of the phone a touch, but whatever.
I think RAM is constraining phones, slightly, still, so new phones tend to feel a little better, but it's definitely percentage points rather than sea-changes

By s y Go To PostThis trend of phones shipping without chargers is so fucking lameTbh I don’t really need more chargers, seems like a waste to me to keep including them in the box. I have so many already.
The excuse OEMs make about it being for the environment is pretty lame though, it’s definitely not because of that since they’re still selling you a charger separately in another box. What they could do instead that would have been better is if you bought a phone now you get a discount if you add the charger in at check out, I guess.

Spotify quietly updated its autoplay feature with a seriously frustrating quirk. When you play music on your Spotify Connect devices, autoplay is now enabled by default and there’s no way to turn it off. This means that after your album, playlist, or your song selection is done playing on any device other than your phone or computer, Spotify will continue playing recommended tracks indefinitely.
Dislikes and downvotes are fucking stupid for sites like that and Reddit, anyway. That's one Google decision that I am not bothered by.
By reilo Go To PostSpotify making it harder and harder year by year. Fairly close to going over to Apple Music at this rate, given the cost of Spotify's family plan went up, they'll likely charge more for spatial/Hi-Fi too, and they just keep doing dumb shit.
That said, Spotify Connect largely remains undefeated compared to Apple Music etc, and the network effect of having all of my friends on Spotify definitely makes it a harder call
Is this where we talk about the macbooks?
I was going to ask in the other PC thread but didn't understand what anyone in there was saying.

By reilo Go To PostIt's a good move and keeping it is there to only serve the trollsI think a dislike button is necessary. There’s a lot of dumbass videos on YouTube with little to no information, poorly made, or just scams. If I’m looking up a review for a product and the top video is just an advertisement or an unboxing that just says “I really like this product” that’s not an actual review and just a waste of time
Has anyone here ever used cloudHQ before? I want to back my dropbox data up to Google Drive and they seem to be popular.

Going to go for the M1 16" to replace my current laptop which is falling apart. Got it in 2014 - now the speakers are fried, the audio jack no longer works, and the keyboard is on the fritz.
I don think I need the Max chip, but I will be looking to some video editing work later down the line.
Is the M1 considered future-proof enough? my first time owning a mac.

Typically you'd expect them to stay solid for a fair few years, but always worth cautioning that new tech is hard to gauge in that sense. Can't see any practical reasons you'd have issues in 5 or so years, but it's a relatively new approach to system architecture, so I don't know how it fairs, especially given there were some concerns about how much and often last years M1s were leaning on the SSD for memory swapping, given we don't really know how much use the SSDs in these things are rated for.
Track record though, I'd say yes, you're probably fine

I'm curious to see what happens with all of the efficiency gains and whether that impacts longevity. Not having to kick the fan into jetplane mode to keep the thermals cool must have some sort of positive impact on a component's life, no?
Thermals are kinda hard to just speculate on since different components respond differently to heat and have different temperature tolerances.
A fan not ramping up to higher speeds could be detrimental to other internal components that would otherwise get airflow from a CPU cooler for instance.

You'd expect so, though on the negative end, it's all bundled so tightly that any kind of failure looks like it'll be a full mainboard replacement. There's always some curveball with new Apple laptop hardware though, keyboards that fell to pieces when a singular crumb got in them, hinges that weren't designed to be opened often enough ending up with the need for screen replacement, screens that burnt out at the bottom.
By HonestVapes Go To PostThermals are kinda hard to just speculate on since different components respond differently to heat and have different temperature tolerances.Yeah, but I wonder how much information they take from their previous machines like the M1 Macs, and even back to the iPads and iPhones, given they're the same family of chips
