By Pedja Go To PostWhat does Apple Music do that makes it better?
-Better Quality
-Atmos support
-More songs
-Exclusive releases on launch
I do think Spotify has a better UI and algorithm for recommending songs based on what you like tho. And you do have to pay for Apple Music once the trial is over whereas Spotify obviously has a free tier.
Apple Music's UI was awful when I used a couple years ago. That could have changed.
What launch exclusives do they still get? The last exclusive album I remember launching on Apple was Drake's album 5 years ago. Iirc they stopped doing exclusive releases completely in 2017.
Doesn't Spotify also stream songs at a higher nitrate than apple music plus they both offer hifi/lossless tiers

i'm using tidal right now, but will probably switch back to spotify once they get hifi audio
the apple music desktop experience is just too trash to consider

Apple Music streams at a bitrate of 256kbps, which seems lower than Spotify’s 320 kbp/s at face value, but it’s not exactly like-for-like because Apple Music uses its own AAC audio codec.
I switched back and forth between Apple Music and Spotify this morning, and Apple Music sounded better to me.
I don’t think Spotify offered lossless yet
By sy is trying Go To PostYou have to set the stream quality in the Spotify settings.
I know
E: oh shyt. Forgot I had to reset the settings since I’m on a new phone
Still
Atmos support with ATV + my Sonos Arc setup means Apple Music >>>
UI is trash tho
By Pedja Go To PostWhat does Apple Music do that makes it better? From a general opinion of mine, I absolutely hate Spotify's UX and that it's catering to playlists aka algorithms. I listen to albums and Spotify makes that near impossible.

A change to Spotify’s design influences how we interact with the music there—for example, denaturing genres in favor of an automated “Chill Vibes” playlist, as the writer Liz Pelly has observed. In March, Spotify updated the interface of its desktop app, the version that I use most often. The goal was to remove clutter, but I found that I could no longer click once to get directly to the albums that I had saved; instead, I had to click to a Your Library tab, which loads a Playlists window, and only then gives options for Podcasts, Artists, and Albums, in that order. The change encourages users to gravitate toward playlists—not coincidentally, the type of experience that the company can control, by offering its own curated streams. It’s not surprising that podcasts are the next most prominent option, given Spotify’s acquisitions of the podcast producers Gimlet and the Ringer. Meanwhile, the musicians or albums that a user has chosen for herself have been pushed aside. Spotify’s co-founder and C.E.O., Daniel Ek, recently said that the changes were about “enabling you to be a much better curator even for yourself.” In reality, the app is encouraging passive listening over conscious selection. From Why Twitter’s New Interface Makes Us Mad
Fair enough. I end up going through search/artist pages when I want albums, and I only ever listen on mobile.
The biggest pros with Spotify for me are the social side, since most of my friends use it and that’s how we share, the recommendations and algorithm, and the connected playback between devices.
I can basically send Spotify to any device in my house, but Apple Music can basically only use AirPlay for that, which just isn’t near as good to me.
Audio quality is largely good enough on both services since I’m doing most listening through BT headphones, and the higher bitrates/lossless especially just aren’t that important.

Record €225m fine for WhatsApp Ireland over data protection breaches
The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has fined WhatsApp Ireland €225m for infringements of data protection rules.
It is the largest fine ever imposed by the DPC and the second largest penalty ever levied on an organisation under EU data laws.
The DPC acts as the lead supervisory authority for WhatsApp across Europe.
The probe was launched by the DPC three years ago, after new rules on data protection were brought into force by the EU.
The inquiry examined whether WhatsApp had met its obligations under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regarding the provision of information and the transparency of that information to both users and non-users of WhatsApp's services.
This included the transparency of information provided to users about the processing of their data between WhatsApp and other Facebook companies.
that seems awkward, at best

Honestly, they as well be called Brand communities, because that's what I see most of them being for. It's trying to be like an even worse version of reddit.
By LuminaryGhost Go To PostIt's Google so it most definitely does. I had to go into my dev Pixel 5 yesterday and turn off so many tracking things behind 8 layers of shit.
“What if your smartphone knew more about you than you knew about yourself?”
Starting Thursday, the first pair of smart glasses made by Facebook and Ray-Ban are going on sale for $299. They’re called Ray-Ban Stories, and you’ll be able to find them pretty much anywhere Ray-Bans are sold, including LensCrafters and Sunglasses Hut stores.
The frames feature two-front facing cameras for capturing video and photos. They sync with a companion camera roll app called Facebook View, where clips can be edited and shared to other apps on your phone (not just Facebook’s own). There’s a physical button on the glasses for recording, or you can say “Hey Facebook, take a video” to control them hands-free.
I wonder what the overlap on “I won’t get vaccinated so the government can’t put a chip in me” is with “I need FaceBook Stories that give the government and private companies a 100% accurate view of my life from my own eyes”
By Laboured Go To PostAh. Well. Nevertheless. So Ray Ban stories are just gonna be videos shot in overcast weather?
That’s pretty huge news. I think Tim Sweeney is a manchild and I dislike how Epic used children for their shitty corporate war, but this will be better for developers overall.
This is good overall, but there's gonna be a huge chasm in customer experience now. Apple is gonna lock their APIs down now. Losing some of that on a per-app basis would be a bummer.
It's massive. I do wonder what the output is from this for most games.
I assume Candy Crush, Fortnite, etc. can push its users towards paying for microtransactions off-app, but I wonder how well smaller games can convince players to do the same?

Hoping for new AirPod Pros tomorrow. I held off to see if there’s new ones tomorrow. If not, I’ll just pick up the ones out now.

I’m glad they made 128GB the base storage, about time. Honestly though this feels like a standard ‘S’ update. Not much new.
