By sy Go To Postwhat is that friend?Network attached storage. They're effectively micro servers that take a few drives and are accessible over the network and outside if you want.
They run software if you want, so I'm planning on using one to replace my aging Plex/media server as well as my time machine backup
What kind of features are you looking for? Is there something about the 9XX+ models that you are wanting?
By diehard Go To PostWhat kind of features are you looking for? Is there something about the 9XX+ models that you are wanting?Because it'll need to act as a Plex server for me and my fam, I wanted something that could hardware transcode relatively easily. Also wanted something with 4 drive bays just for future expandability
By JesalR Go To PostBecause it'll need to act as a Plex server for me and my fam, I wanted something that could hardware transcode relatively easily. Also wanted something with 4 drive bays just for future expandabilityThen those should be nice. The DS420+ is also pretty capable and worth looking into if the price savings are worth it in your region. I think the price difference is only $50 here so its kinda a no-brainer to go with the 920+
By Lunatic Go To PostCan these NAS' even transcode 4K? Seems like something that would require a server.Yep. Relatively new Intel processors support hardware accelerated x264/x265 encode/decode so they perform much better than their otherwise middling x86 performance. The Dual core DS420+ should do it mostly fine unless maybe its super high bitrate and the DS920+ should have no trouble.
Hardware encoding for Plex does require the subscription though
By Lunatic Go To PostCan these NAS' even transcode 4K? Seems like something that would require a server.Software transcode, probably not. Hardware transcode is much easier, though you will lose out on some quality.
By LabouredPatriot Go To PostHuge if true.🚮
Update on my NAS journey. I think I'm going to build one myself, instead of picking up a Synology
Looking at something like this case:
https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/node/node-304/black/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-bnJgOvc7wIVBurtCh2bQQOIEAAYAiAAEgJCRPD_BwE
And this mobo:
https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/J4125-ITX/
Although I may wait for the latest gen of Intel's J series Celerons to drop proper and look for a newer integrated mobo
But, that's basically what a DS920+ is, software aside. There are also cases with plug and play drive ports, but that seems pointless to me.
----
Also looking at https://www.u-nas.com/xcart/cart.php?target=product&product_id=17638 since it's smaller volume than the fractal, little more expensive though

By diehard Go To PostWhat kind of file system / software would you use?Not decided yet, if I'm trying to replicate an actual NAS I'd got FreeNAS with ZFS, but the main reason I wanted this was to be a media server and time machine backup, so a full fat NAS seems overkill.
I already have offsite backups of my data in BackBlaze, and my key data in Drive too, so I'm not hugely worried about local redundancy.
I wanted to buy an iPad Pro with a Pencil for my birthday but I'm seeing rumors that a new one is right around the corner? Guess I should hold off
By Not Go To PostI wanted to buy an iPad Pro with a Pencil for my birthday but I'm seeing rumors that a new one is right around the corner? Guess I should hold offOf you're buying one to just draw with, get the new ipad air. There's nothing a new ipad pro could have that will justify the price difference. Still shocked Apple so willingly killed any reason to get the pro.
Unless you reaaaaaaaly want the 12.9 screen or just have money to burn.
What's the next big thing for smartphone brehs? Besides camera software getting better over time, have phones peaked?
Besides getting slow over time, I'm probably stocking with this pixel 3a xl for the long foreseeable future.

Next major steps in smartphones are foldables, seems every major manufacturer is rumoured to have one.

LG officially tapping out
LG Electronics Inc. (LG) announced that it is closing its mobile business unit. The decision was approved by its board of directors earlier today.Always liked that they were willing to try something different even if it never worked out. Loved my G2.
A lot of people I know had issues with boot loops with Nexus phones, and I had my fair share. LG makes great TVs, but phones were always a mess.
I loved the Nexus 4 and 5 for what they were, and how much they cost, but the cameras were always subpar and the battery was generally weak.
Those were my last Android phones before jumping ship

Yeah I loved my LG phone, until it went into a boot loop.

Even the last gen iPad Pro will outperform the A14 Air. It has more (and better) performance cores, more RAM, and if you're into drawing, most importantly, has a better screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.
By reilo Go To PostThat's not true, at all.Literally none of that is relevant if you like to draw man. None of it.

Procreate runs smooth as butter on a regular ipad. Let alone an air or pro.
Procreate runs smooth on old ass iphones.
The extra performance is useless. You'll never run out of layers and I can't describe how useless a 120hz screen is for drawing. You're staring a static pixels, the most movement you're doing is zooming in and out of the canvas. It's more useless than 1024 vs 2048 levels of pen pressure.
Ask aaaaaannnnyone who uses
The new Air is actually faster single core and has a higher Metal score than the 2020 Pro. It's about 10% slower multicore, but that's within decent striking distance. RAM and screen are fair, but the price difference makes it a tough comparison
Getting a new laptop charger since mine keeps disconnecting even when firmly plugged in, and only holds the connection when it's at a very precise angle
If it's a problem with the port rather than the connector, I'll be needing recommendations 😔

I really want a good vector drawing app, its been so convenient to highlight specific lines when I sketch compared to using bitmaps. Looking into Adobe Fresco

I tried my moms ipad air and the difference is quite staggering when seeing the pencil stroke lack behind. It just feels a lot more natural on 120hz. The latency really puts me off using a pencil on any digital screen. But I will find other people too I guess:
https://www.imore.com/best-ipad-artists
https://www.reddit.com/r/iPadPro/comments/cv8dlv/ipad_pro_1st_gen_or_2nd_gen_refurbished_refresh/
https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/6ig3u1/why_120hz_matters_original_content/
You will also find a never ending amount of people, begging Wacom to finally release a 120hz Cintiq.
The ram/cpu and whatever probably doesnt matter much, at least I am never close to maxing out performance or max layers, but I guess professionals could do that. The ipad air is amazing value, and certainly still a good choice. But 60hz really puts me off sketching.
You also said find me anyone that uses it to draw, that cares about 120hz.
The amount of professional artists (who draws a titty every now and then) wanting this from wacom, after having tried it on an ipad, says it all.

Looking at those reddit links, nobody uses it to draw either. Or at least none of bought one specifically for drawing.
The only thing professional artists want from wacom is a price drop.

from the two reddit threads i linked to:
'Once you use 120hz there is no going back. Just get the 2nd gen. Its so worth it. Everything is super smooth. Writing and sketching on the iPad feels so natural like you are actually writing on a paper and with even improved touch latency '
'Actually, the improved refresh rate matters quite a bit when drawing with the Apple Pencil. It drops the perceived latency of the Pencil from 20ms down to 8ms.'
Gizmondo also mentions drawing is the one place you will see the 120hz mattering
https://gizmodo.com/the-new-ipad-pro-incredible-but-not-worth-the-upgrade-1796143035
But anyway you seem pretty set in your beliefs here. So going to leave it at this: Ive tried it myself in person and the difference to me is quite obvious.
I still don't know if you are being for real with those reddit replies but I will also exit this conversation.
An ipad without some type of screen protector feels like drawing on glass because you're drawing on glass and never not feels like glass.

I am, as you told me to find anyone that cares about it when drawing, and they were the first to pop up. I posted them among two review sites saying the same.
the idea of a pro drawing on an ipad is still funny. they'll choose slow ass wacom displays, so 120hz isn't high priority, but we're talking about ipads here. it's a casual device. does 120hz feel good? yeah. decide for yourself if that's important.
don't forget the cost of one of those etched screen protectors though (warning they distort colour), drawing on ipad is absolute dogshit without one

There's quite a lot that do these days. Although I guess most also finish it up on a pc or mac later.

Not as good as a Wacom but eh. But yeah, Procreate + Ipad has been a legitimate start to finish machine for many pros. Even Oda does his thumbnails and final colors for volume covers and spreads in it.

Probably less so for AAA concept art due to all the 3d/photobashing fuckery that goes into it
