By LFMartins86 Go To PostNearly 700MB for less than a minute.back on this, how much data do you burn by streaming 52 seconds of 8k footage?
And I used a gimbal (even though it's not properly calibrated for my phone) so that's why the footage isn't extremely shaky.
By diehard Go To Postthere is no real reason to record at 8k with a sensor of that size though
For real. Lol
Yay, finally got dnscrypt-server and dnscrypt-proxy working together in Docker containers. It's really not necessary but it is neat and was fun (for me) to learn about and setup. From what I understand, it means I no longer use my ISP or third party DNS servers (like Google or Cloudflare) to resolve DNS addresses for me.
The dnscrypt-server is setup to be recursive in order to prevent DNS spoofing so that anytime I type in my bank's URL, I am guaranteed to actually go to my bank's site instead of it being redirected to some third-party's site to steal my information. It also caches lookups so that when I go to a site I have been to before, it quickly does its thing. This makes using a browser feel just a little bit snappier.
The dnscrypt-proxy is what talks to the dnscrypt-server and encrypts all my requests so that even if someone is able to infiltrate my local network (lol), my DNS queries will still be protected from being read or messed with.
They both support DNSSEC queries which helps protect against other man-in-the-middle attacks, too.
Again, this is completely unnecessary but, hey, I have a more secure and quicker home network now! It can easily run on a super cheap Raspberry Pi, too! Adding in a Pi-hole to block ads and trackers (using the green and ticked lists from this site) still results in less than 300 MB of RAM being used by those three services along with minimal CPU and storage usage.

A friend of mine asked me for recommendations for a Windows laptop. $1k budget, no gaming or heavy creative app usage like Photoshop needed.

By reilo Go To PostIs there anything non-touchscreen?Right now, the Ryzen 4000 series laptops are such a great value it's hard not to recommend one in that price range. They have been hard to find because everyone buys all those models though.

Is fantastic for the price. The only downside is the screen is a bit dim (250 nits). We get 220 nit screens here commonly and its totally fine for indoor usage but that won't be good for anything outside or if you like blindingly bright screens. It's also not a super slim ultrabook style if they care about that.
It's brand new so there really isn't a lot of info but you should expect a minimum level of quality (pretty good) with going for a Thinkpad even if it a lower-ish end one.
The Case of the Top Secret iPod
It was a gray day in late 2005. I was sitting at my desk, writing code for the next year’s iPod. Without knocking, the director of iPod Software—my boss’s boss—abruptly entered and closed the door behind him. He cut to the chase. “I have a special assignment for you. Your boss doesn’t know about it. You’ll help two engineers from the US Department of Energy build a special iPod. Report only to me.”
Got a new phone after four years of my blackberry priv. Loved it but it had been breaking down for over a year now.
Wanted the pixel 4a, but it wasn't in stock. Got the LG V60 ThinQ, instead. Screen is too big and no hardware keyboard but it is swift, has a headphone jack with good dac, and all the latest Bluetooth codecs.

When you show up to your parents house and realize their Xfinity cable box is set to 720p on their 60" HDTV....

Probably years late, but I got the matching wireless charger for my phone. One of those things that's not necessary, but once you have it, you realize...this is pretty nice.
Wireless charging is gdlike
I got one by my bed and installed the Ikea wireless grommet charger on my desk. Looking forward to buy Air Pods Pro just for the wireless charging case because it's ao convenient.

The new Xperia 5 II sounds pretty promising.
So it seems like a slightly smaller version of their current flagship (Xperia 1 Mark II) with a 1080p 120hz screen (Mark II is 4k 60hz) and adding 5G.
I'm happy with my LG V40 but I do plan on moving to the next phone that checks all these boxes, specifically the 120hz screen. Shame this phone is only FHD and not 4K. Regardless, it's guaranteed to be way overpriced and likely unavailable to demo easily in the US. I was able to play with the Xperia 1 last summer and I think the tall thin body shape is slick.
6.1-inch, FHD+ OLED display with 21:9 aspect ratio, 120 Hz refresh rate, and 240 Hz touch sampling rate.
158 x 68 x 8 mm body, Snapdragon 865 chipset (non-Plus), with 8GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage and 3.5mm headphone jack.
4,000 mAh battery, with Power Delivery charging via USB-C.
12MP main shooter, with f/1.7 aperture, 24mm equivalent lens, with 82-degree field of view, a 12MP telephoto, with f/2.4 aperture and 3x optical zoom and then another 12MP ultrawide, with f/2.2 aperture, 16 mm equivalent focal length and 124-degree field of view.

By sy Go To PostHas Adobe or anyone else figured out some kind of machine learning upscaling for images?Absolutely.
By Kibner Go To PostAbsolutely. What's that called? Last thing I remember was smart objects in photoshop but it wasnt good.

This is a review that talks about several options: https://topten.ai/image-upscalers-review/
e: i just googled "image upscale machine learning" and found a bunch more
By Kibner Go To PostThis seems like it works: https://imageupscaler.comI was more talking about in the context of inside editing software. Like I have layer x in photoshop but want to blow it up without it becoming super pixelated.

Got invited onto the Apple Universal App Quick Start Program, should get an ARM Mac next week or the week after.
Hopefully they do what they've done in previous transitions and give you a free machine at the end

By Smokey Go To PostIs a new Apple 4k TV ever coming out or nahMost likely announced tomorrow at the Apple event
MacRumors:
Leaker Jon Prosser has suggested the new Apple TV will be equipped with an A12X Bionic chip, while a rumor from 9to5Mac indicates it will use an A14 chip, the same chip expected in the 2020 iPhones.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a new Apple TV with a faster processor and a revamped remote control. The updated remote control, which was also hinted at in iOS 14 code, is said to include a new feature that's similar to Find My iPhone for locating the remote when it's lost inside the house. The new Apple TV is expected to launch in 2021 rather than 2020.

The current remote is awful. The updated specs are nice, but that's the real travesty.
Wait, today's Apple Event won't even be about iPhones? Damn, how much is the next iPhone delayed by? Google is gonna showcase Pixel 5 on 9/30.
New iPaid Air will have TouchID but it's on top of the power button:
That's really nifty. iPad Air seems to be a better buy than an iPad Pro.

I am really confused. The new Ipad Air is 11 inches, is just as strong or stronger than the Ipad Pro, but $599.99? Does it support the Apple Pencil? If I'm looking to replace my Pro in the next 2-3 years, what benefit do either of the pro models offer if I don't care about 120hz?

If you use your Pro to draw and illustrate that 120hz is still the best reason to get on, no?
By Perfect Blue Go To PostApparently supports the Pencil as well as the Magic Keyboard.Looking at the Apple website, looks like all the ipads support the apple pencil now, which was by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar the pro's biggest selling point to me.
The Pro line seems redundant now if the only real difference is an extra 2 inches.
