RIP to all those lost.
Has the Japanese government done anything to solve some of the issues that arose from the earthquake? I just hope their response had more due diligence than what the US government did after Katrina.

Are you talking in regards to relief and aid or about rebuilding and compensation towards victims?
There were a lot of monetary and volunteer donations from private companies and Taiwan, Korea, and the United States being some of the biggest donors in monetary and volunteer relief.
Even 5 years later there is still a need for humanitarian relief from victims suffering from displacement. It is still being provided through organization and volunteer.
The kokkai is still a mess debating on infrastructure and other issue. I cannot compare since i am not the most familiar about the united states actions immediately after and years after the hurricane.

That's good info. Not just that, but also structural and engineering efforts to prevent future meltdowns if a similar earthquake hits.
it is a very touchy subject. since the disaster I think 3 nuclear reactors were restarted and put back into commission. The population and the kokkai is split. A lot of people are very anti-nuclear and believe it to be dangerous, not only because of the potential issues, but because of how energy is run by private companies and the current majority party the jimintou have representatives who believe nuclear is essential and necessary for the country to function due to its geographical location and limitations the country has.
you will get different opinions on it, I am in my early 20s and i am from hokkaido while blackace and other members come from a different background and he is like 20 years older than me.
I can see that nuclear can be good, but it is very very dangerous in irresponsible hands when privatized and owned among shareholders like touden. The cons outweigh the pros, other forms of alternative energy is also dangerous. I am just not very comfortable with it at the moment considering the state of affairs.
a example could be energy in california with gray davis and enron energy, but this being on a different scale in terms of corporate interests and centralization.

Modern ones are much much safer. And that one basically copped gods ultimate wrath, and it was contained.

The truth is that the sheer amount of power people want can not be serviced without something like nuclear or coal. And nuclear is probably cleaner / does less harm to the planet. Even Germany has turned theirs back on. Because they just have to (or admitted that the plans to try and shut them down just aren't feasible? I forget).
Though I agree, they should just NOT be in private company hands. They have to be government run. They just can't be subject to turning a profit. No corner should ever be cut.
