Watching people eat food is a super popular thing in South Korea so my girlfriend is now researching why. She will be recording lots of videos of me eating food to share with other people in experimental settings and I will post them here to make people feel strange.

I made some fucking awesome steaks yesterday. I should have recorded eating steak yesterday.
Bone in NY strip steak ($5)
Shake salt and pepper all over it.
Rub olive oil all over it.
Place in a non-stick, non-greased pan on fairly high heat
Flip after 3.5 minutes.
Take out after another 3.5 minutes.
Rest for five minutes.
Medium rare perfection.
... Do not cook steaks for 30 minutes.

Oh. It's more than super popular. There are people who have gone full time and are making a shit load of money off of it. There is a whole section dedicated to it on their streaming platform afreeca. They use the term Mokbang i believe to describe it. And there have been many documentaries on the subject. Even bourdain has covered it.
The prevailing theory about why they're so popular is that Koreans are expected to work some absurd hours. And lots of the current young generation are single. So it's a way for people of both genders to eat dinner with someone instead of eating alone.
Afreeca.com is the version of the site for koreans.

I personally always enjoy the food eating segments of variety shows. But don't watch Mokbang. I could watch idol's eat food all day though, as embarrassing as that is to say in a non-kpop community. I mean, there are collections of idols eating on youtube too.
