There are a couple teams that have undeniable talent and should be doing better which says to me: Coach sucks.
By giririsss Go To PostBut thats not a coaching thing. That's a roster thing.
You can simplify your offence only so far. If you make it too simple, then it's too easy to defend. And you'd get completely destroyed and not learn anything about your players and roster. AD is ok in the post, but he's not DMC. You don't want to play "just dump it to AD" like the kings do with DMC. You want to take advantage of his athleticism and put him in motion.
Then you add in the fact that they are never healthy. The team just doesn't' get enough time together to really get comfortable with any offence.
By the posts in this thread there's no coach that you would accept. Maybe mike brown's dump it to bron offence. But that's not going to do anything for you long term. And AD is too frail to get banged up that much.
Really, the roster and health need fixing. The coach can only do much.
It's why the Hornacek firing was also bad.
Gentry is the type of coach trying to match the roster to his system, not a coach that matches the system to his roster. If i have one overarcing problem with him that is it. It has nothing to do with simplifying the offense or forcing the ball to AD.
That was my #1 concern with him before the season. People on here praised him but I remained skeptical but slowly optimistic due to the hype. I like some things, skeptical on others. I wouldn't be heartbroken if he was fired along with Demps but I am also willing to give him another go next year with a better circumstance.
I am not calling for his head, haven't yet, but I do see some questionable things with his coaching that can't be hand waved away by injuries such as his rotations and scheming. There continues to be no reason for Jrue to not be playing the vast majority of his minutes with AD and to still be starting Cole for instance. When you dig further into the lineups, he has been very bad at maximizing the lineups that actually do work. Along with the types of plays that our team is most successful at within those lineups. Which is baffling for a guy that won the job by bombarding Demps with a bunch of analytical breakdowns of how to improve our team.

I think Gentry needs a clean house though, get rid of Tyreke and alot of the marginal guys who aren't defenders and start fresh.
By DY_nasty Go To PostGS might've just erased OKC from this timeline.lots of people thought they had next
I SWEAR the Thunder had next. I just knew it.
GSW legit came from nowhere
WTF OKC had a 9 point lead?

Like I said, I am ok giving him another year if the (hopefully) new GM wants that. If not I won't be heartbroken. I don't think he is one of those rare coaches like Pop, Thibs, Jackson or Carlisle that are true difference makers for a franchise but I do think that with the right cast he can be pretty good. I think for me the red flag is that Gentry is no spring chicken, he has been around the league a long time. I get the injuries are tough but some of this stuff is so obvious even the largely apathetic national press has been showing bafflement about some of it.
Thibs is the difference maker alright, in term made your franchise key player dead
We have shit season, and our current coach might've total shit, but I not regretting his leave
We probably never in this spot if Jo not ruined

I mean we can argue back and forth about his methods and how much he was responsible for injuries(I tend to think he was given too much blame) but the guy got results.
Frankly I am very curious where he lands because he has spent his time off on an NBA consulting and info gathering tour trying to improve his understanding of the offensive side of the game. Just left George Karl and is on his way for a week with Kerr and GS. He sounded like a man reborn on Simmons podcast talking about pace and space and praising the Warriors organization.
I'm not gonna lie, if I thought we had a chance at him I would move mountains to get him.

So about par for the course then? Ok, bring him in.
