ESPN suspends Bill Simmons for 3 weeks

“Every employee must be accountable to ESPN and those engaged in our editorial operations must also operate within ESPN’s journalistic standards. We have worked hard to ensure that our recent NFL coverage has met that criteria. Bill Simmons did not meet those obligations in a recent podcast, and as a result we have suspended him for three weeks.”

He's a columnist... and opinion provider... none of what he said was out of line. What "journalistic standards" exist under editorial columns? Shameful. ESPN goes harder against their employees for speaking out against the NFL than the NFL does against their players for punching women out cold.
What did he say do you know?
“Goodell, if he didn’t know what was on that tape, he’s a liar. I’m just saying it. He is lying. If you put him up on a lie detector test, that guy would fail. For all these people to pretend they didn’t know is such [expletive] [expletive]. It really is, it’s such [expletive] [expletive]. For him to go into that press conference and pretend otherwise — I was so insulted.”

Oh. I heard that one. And his NFL column that week went all in too.
ESPN found a way to make the story bigger. Did anyone even really comment on what Simmons said beofre? Now all they've done is have more people hear/read it and bring criticism to the network for it.
What moron up high made that decision?
Sadly, I won't have him and Cousin Sal's lines pod the next few weeks when I run on Monday afternoons. :(

I just love Bill. Haven't missed a podcast since almost its creation, save for a couple reality tv ones. I hope he goes independent with his friends. He's big enough.
Listening to that podcast was so good. Over the past few years, Simmons has really become more realistic about drugs and cheating in professionnal sports, and his and Sal's opinion on HGH was just refreshing. So tired of big corporations' bullshit about leagues that are nothing but products. For being so candid, he's more professionnal.

This read like the NFL sent emails from nuclear lawyers x1000.
I couldn't be any more grossed out by that league. I grew up living for Sunday football, noon to midnight. Now i don't even want to read about it.

I couldn't be any more grossed out by that league. I grew up living for Sunday football, noon to midnight. Now i don't even want to read about it.Same. I was already distancing myself from the NFL pretty good the last couple years, I don't watch it anymore, I only hear about it peripherally, but when I watched League of Denial, I really didn't want anything to do with it anymore. I have this fundamental problem with the game now where I realize it's built around people giving themselves head trauma and I can't support that.
This Simmons situation is just stupid. He's not a journalist, he was just talking on a podcast to his friend. I think he's right, too, Goodell had to have known everything. So lame.
NFL must be in dat ass
^this and Bill Simmons overestimating the pull he has with ESPN now that he is no longer hosting NBA Countdown.
With that said ESPN has been suspending a lot of their on the air personalities lately. It really reflects the lack of control producers of the shows have on the talent.

I don't care about the head trauma stuff. Nobody is forcing anyone to risk their lives for our personal amusement.
I care about the integrity of the game being ruined by going soft. I grew up looking forward to watching the week's biggest hits. I'm not even sure if it's possible to construct such a highlight on a weekly basis.
NFL must be in dat !@#$%^&*

ESPN isn't the MTV of sports like it was in the 90s. It's gone full corporate now.
If they want to go back to keeping it real, they should have had like Stephen A vs Hannah Storm/Michelle Beadle on First Take instead of Skip.
