Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said. Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa. According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.
Whoa, I'm not an American but this is big new for the SC right? Does Obama have time to get in somebody better?

The Senate needs to consent. They will not.
They don't have to consent ever, for the matter. It can last years, until the Senate majority changes, if we go by the Republicans' attitude since 2010.
I've said what I felt about people like Scalia and Thomas on the supreme court in the politics thread. It's certainly upsetting to have these hateful people make decisions for a country that's trying to move forward, but since the court is the least representative branch of the government, I can't in good conscience say that they shouldn't be on the bench.
For better or worse, they represent a sizeable part of the electorate. An ugly and regressive part of the country for sure, but they should still have a voice in a functioning democracy.

I'm not sure I agree, I can't think of any time or place where social conservatism has actually assisted anyone (well other than people already privileging from the status quo).

^I literally did that when I heard this a few minutes ago. Obama is going to have to hustle but he should be able to get somebody in that seat before he leaves..... Or Hilary can lock the vote up if she says she would put Obama there if she wins......

They'll easily get their wish until the change of president, by then what do you imagine they do, roll over? I can definitely see them holding on to that attitude.

All jokes aside if they don't this election will become about filling that seat as well and I think they would actually get a lot more people to vote. Especially if the Dem's flip it into voting against Scalia being replaced with well another version of Scalia. That's not in the repubs favor not just on a presidential level but in all those senate votes as well. I really doubt they obstruct to that level

But that is for them to decide. If you take their representation away in the name of "it's for your own good", they lose their agency, no matter how correct you are. They have a right to be represented, you can't take that away from them.

That was a joke Gaby. If either candidate said that they would lose horribly.

Not how it works. Alexander Hamilton, Federalist Paper n°76, the SC can not be in the hands of the people, because they're likely to be dumber than the President.

Of course an actual Federalist like Alexander Hamilton would say that. You can argue against my point if you'd like, but that's a position inconsistent with the spirit of a liberal democracy. Period.

Sri Srinivasan was confirmed with a 97-0 vote. I think that's who Obama goes with.

Reading up on him he is a career lawyer whose defended both liberal causes and big business clients. If the Repubs had any sense they would go with him like they did before but they wont because they are idiots.
By Facism Go To Postguess i've got some reading to do. Guessing he was a huge, huge labia? He was an old school social conservative who was beloved by the right because of his snarky (and childish) disssents. He was an enemy of social progress.
His replacement is huge and potentially pivotal on campaign finance, gun control, abortion, and the rights of minorities of various kinds.

By reilo Go To PostI really don't wanna gloat about this but I wouldn't feel bad if others did, tbh.He was a public figure. Nothing wrong with pointing out that he was a miserable, closeminded prick from a different era.
The fact that he was still in office makes the consequences of his death much more immediate and consequential than the death of say, Reagan or Thatcher.
Yeah when a position is for life and one of the people in it is a total obstructionist, there's no winning.

There is no doubt Justice #Scalia, a wonderful patriot, has already heard, "Well done, good & faithful servant"..
From the devil, innit
Louie you gotta determine remarks like that. Doesn't even sound like something God would say - he ain't a man-manager.
