Thanks and all, but the last time I responded to you, you hurled insults and shit at me. You do you buddy, I'm just not down to engage.
By blackace Go To PostNot going to defend ESPN but they have always pushed the now narrative… And most likely with the all out blessing of the NBA
It makes sense from a business stance… instead of saying all of older products are way better than now.
LBJ and Curry being ranked what they are is just business more than respect
Recency Bias doesn't explain Kobe at 12. I know people have this resistance to the idea that analytics hacks aren't objectively honest morally perfect human beings. Their very relevance is built in to the idea that their style of measurements or evaluations is more valuable than the traditional style. So everything, or most things, have to fit that narrative.
For normal basketball people, statistics was one piece of the puzzle that included skill level, dominance, winning, etc. etc. For analytics people statistics has to be rushed to the forefront - but more than that - representatives of the old way of thinking have to be downgraded too. Even if it's not malicious, it's the natural turn of events.
Kobe/Phil represent the old way of doing things. Pop/D'Antoni and Timmy represent the new way of doing things. It doesn't matter if they don't even fucking understand what they're talking about, but the lines are firmly drawn.

The only way that Pelton and Arnovitz and Abbott and these people have jobs outside of purely number-crunching is because they're given credibility by an audience that's been convinced that they're better sources of accurate information than NBA Players and Coaches.
What ESPN does is the opposite of what TNT and to a slightly lesser degree NBA TV does. The latter have their number crunchers, their Underdogs and their John Schumann, but they're rarely if ever given a prominent seat at the table. Those organizations choose to get their nba analysis from NBA people, their reporting from reporters like DA, and their fantasy stuff straight from analytics people.
ESPN, especially on their site, has handed the keys over almost exclusively to non-basketball people.

It explains why Lebron is ahead of Kobe and Timmy sure, but it doesn't explain why Kobe's not ahead of Magic and Bird or Kareem. It doesn't explain why Dirk/Garnett aren't ahead of Malone and Barkley etc.
The recency bias, while always prevalent, really only seems to be working in Lebron's favor on this list. Mainly because his profile from an analytics perspective is being massively overvalued and his profile from a winning perspective is being massively undervalued. Same with Russell who clocks in outside of the top 5.
Curry will just need to play near the level he is playing at for a few years to surpass LBJ...
the thing is LBJ has monster numbers

And I'm saying that they sprinkle guys in based on giving Analytic measurements a significantly higher value level than career achievements, winning, or skill set.

Everyone will call me a homer but I don't care. If he gets another and plays the way he is for another 5-6 years he's ahead of LeBron on the basis of being the best shooter in history and changing the way the game is played.
He could have an incredible late career as a spot up shooter off the bench for a playoff team. If he plays until he's 37-38 he'd shatter all records and no one would probably ever come close to them.

We kinda have a chance... Maybe... Sort of... Okay not really.
It’s been hurtful enough for the Grizzlies to drop back-to-back home games in overtime to Dallas and Portland.
Now the pain level goes up with the word that center Marc Gasol has a broken right foot and could miss the rest of the season. The team is currently saying he’ll be out indefinitely. fuck shit poor jasper. memphis may tank now.......... worst west conference of all time

Phil Jackson philosophy on coaching.
This is one of the things that baffles me. Phil Jackson isn't D'Antoni or Karl. He's Riley or Pop. These guys have earned the right to build teams based on their vision. Riley doesn't get the same levels of flack for hiring people he works with for decades. He doesn't get the same flack for demanding a similar coaching philosophy and an open line of communication between him and his coaches. Pop, if he ever becomes a GM, has earned the right to hire people who view the world as he views the world. He may fail, and he may succeed, but he's earned the right to choose staff that are consistent with the values and culture he wants to build.
We keep talking about Phil as if he's just some coach who has some maleable ideas about coaching that aren't formed or important to him so he should just hire the best available coaching candidate because coaching styles and philosophies don't matter. The dude didn't take the job to throw shit against the wall until it sticks just to eke out a few more wins. He took the job to build his vision for that organization, which doesn't mean he won't make mistakes, but it does mean the constant calls to abandon that vision at every bump in the road are just silly as hell.
Hey just found out this board has PMs......
Look at Slaent having nice things
Not even trying to throw shade, no way he keeps this up for 5 - 6 more years. Enjoy his prime

The most important takeaway on the mini essay Phil Jackson released earlier today to me? I think he's saying he'd be open to hiring a coach who doesn't have triangle experience.

I don't expect a lot of changes, but I'm hopeful that Rambis has had some time to showcase some of the simple changes they can make to run the offense more intelligently.
I'm going to try to watch it and document the number of easy baskets they get in the half court at or near the rim, as well as the number of times they align themselves poorly in terms of player strengths and weaknesses.

I want to see if certain minutes get restricted and if the offense flows more to Carmelo and KP than Afflalo. Also the bench situation and who plays with the bench will be interesting to see. Galloway has to get 25+ minutes now and better offense/defense moves.

The only real change I want is way more Galloway and a lot less Calderon. He could even let Calderon "start" as long as Gallo gets starting minutes at PG.

I'm talking more in terms of execution rather than rotation. I know a lot of guys have had issues with rotations, I'm more of an "the execution regressed badly" guy.

fair enough but that rotation killed me.
The small ball of the Wizards is just outrunning the Knicks. Knicks getting deep post position with Afflalo and Lopez because of the size advantage, but giving up too many transition buckets. Might need to go small here with one true big just to make sure they can stop the ball in transition.
Very interesting comments by Phil right now. It almost sounds like Fish was on borrowed time for awhile once the offense started to get worse.
Rambis didn't downsize. Hmmm, I wonder if he's convinced that the big lineup can wear them down if they get back in transition fast enough.
... I see the big change Kurt Rambis has made is that Robin Lopez is the #1 scoring option.
